Oh I'm blown away at the beauty I see on these Etsy links. The floral pin selection the ladies have linked to are amazing. Michelle, you have really started something here. I love these pins.
One of them is even giving me ideas for a color scheme for my bathroom.

Angie, the strap on this one is a litttle different. There's no adjustable buckle, it's just one length. I don't know if adding extra holes would do the trick. I did think of that but had second thoughts when I saw the style of the long shoulder strap.
Oooh, so many of those floral pins sound amazing! I'm also loving the sound of the zipper one and many of the other black and white silk ones. Would it be worth looking for one in a brighter hew as well to add a pop of colour to some of my neutral outfits?
Thank you so much, Melissa and Inge! And Melissa, get well soon! I may be assembling your picks into a separate post for evaluation.

Michelle, I saw a number of larger, silky, elegantly floppy flower pins at Nordstrom Rack recently. What sort of Michelle-esque color are you after? I'll have a peek when I'm back there next and see if they're still around, and I'll take note of Angie's input that they should have some black mixed in.

Flower pins tend to be pretty inexpensive, so if you I see a good one I'll just grab it and we can work out the details afterward.

Michelle, Laura is right. The length of the long bag strap can be altered with ease.

Floral pins are widely available here actually. From Esty, to Nordstrom, Anthropologie, Club Monaco and Talbots. Everywhere.

I want the floral pin with the zippers! Thank you Melissa and Inge. That's a k-word worthy floral pin assortment you've put together for Michelle. Hugs to you both.

Michelle, I can see floral pins working on many of your jackets, coats and tops.

Michelle, I echo Angie's suggestion of undoing the top few buttons on the red tunic and wearing a really nice camisole underneath. I often have to do this with button downs because they fit me everywhere but the bust.

Turns out I am taking a sick day, so I have some time to do vicarious shopping. I don't think any of the pins I linked to earlier are quite in line with what you and Angie said. Following those revised guidelines (something with a bit of black, preferably in a silkier fabric and with some edge), here are my new recommendations:

1). This is sort of controlled chaos. It's constructed of layers of black and white silk fabric, cut out in rounds that decrease in size with every layer. The fabrics themselves have a bit of sass, and then the center is embellished with black and white yarn. The black is thin strands standing out from the center, and the white is little puffy balls. The overall effect is messy but structured.

http://www.etsy.com/listing/44.....lack-white

2). This is another folded origami style pin in black and white silk. It's got a very dimensional six-petaled shape in black and white, with the white fabric on the outside and the black on the inside of each petal. In the center is a white plastic pearl pin with flower stamens radiating out. It's clean and streamlined, but in my opinion has a bit of a mod vibe going for it.

http://www.etsy.com/listing/40.....shi-flower

3). This one is not silk, but it is sassy. It's a flower pin made from a black zipper with silver teeth. The zipper has been folded in such a way that it resembles a mum or a dahlia, with the exposed zipper teeth forming the outside edge of each petal, and the zipper pull in the center. These are also available with brass teeth.

http://www.etsy.com/listing/49.....lver-teeth

4). This one has a more delicate feel. It's made from some kind of light, semi-sheer ivory fabric and folded in a rose or cabbage rose style. The edges forming the petal edges have been frayed a bit which adds textural interest. The flower is then embellished at one side with a bit of netting (think millinery, or wedding veil), and then two kinds of feathers. There are black ostrich feathers which are thin and long, and then black and white striped feathers which are shorter and wider than the ostrich. For some reason, I can just see this one with its feathers worn over a chanel jacket. Somewhere the two things got associated in my mind.

http://www.etsy.com/listing/51.....-accessory

5). This one has a very classic with a twist feel to it for me, but you'd have to get the seller to convert the backing to a pin backing. It's another folded origami style black and white silk flower. This one has extra depth and interest because there are three layers of folding in each petal, and because the outermost layer is a black and white patterned shibori fabric with a black background and white rectangle shapes that remind me of cell walls. The second layer is a black silk, and the innermost layer is a white silk. In the center is a black Swarovski pearl.

http://www.etsy.com/listing/48.....shi-french

6). This one is also not silk, but its colors echo the jacket so well that I included it. It's a felted wool flower with a simple round scalloped shape and lots of layers for depth. The background is black, but it has these veins of white running through that remind me of the tweed in the jacket. It has some lovely small pearlescent beads in the center surrounding a larger freshwater pearl.

http://www.etsy.com/listing/19.....and-felted

I didn't find anything like this, but I could also see a simpler flower looking smashing with an old-fashioned cameo at the center.

Maybe if any of these sound interesting, we can put it to a vote.

I'm going back to bed!

I had another look at the ones Melissa posted.

From the third seller, perhaps this could work too?
http://www.etsy.com/listing/50.....wer-brooch

Edit: I see Joy and I are into the same kind of pins;-) I would love to find some gorgeous metal ones.

For your jacket I think I like the leather pin and the grey one from Topshop best.

Michelle, to answer your question about the flower brooches Michelle and Inge linked to, they are not the silky type you want, but more wooly and to me, look more casua, which is another great way to wear theml. Of the ones mentioned, the leather one Inge posted appeals to me most for that jacket. It is a simple style flower. You will want a floral pin that is somewhat simple in style because of all the details in the jacket. Something that includes a sheer silky black fabric would go nicely with the black sheer trim on that jacket.
I'm happiest with my flower brooches that are metal, especially black or white enamel on metal, but that's a personal preference. I wear them as brooches, on belts, and hanging from a chain, pearls or leather cord. I found mine at Macy's. Many department stores carry silky flower pins right now.

Edit: Inge posted the grey one while I was typing. It's beautiful! It looks like a dogwood blossom with more petals. The top layer has 5 petals with more underneath.

Firstly: I haven't had a chance yet to say how much I love that Chanel-esque jacket and your new boyfriend blazer on you, Michelle, gorgeous!!

Etsy is definitely a very good place to find brooches and pins. But you'll need a bit of patience and some luck too, the selection is enormous and not everything is equally fab...

I have bought these on Etsy:
http://www.etsy.com/transaction/15340436
It's really a bright poppy red (not orangey), with a black heart and small black beads (not tacky)
It is felt but I've worn it to more dressy occasions too.

From the same seller I have this one in grey&black.
http://www.etsy.com/transaction/15340435
(I'm hoping someone can describe this;-)

And then there's this one. Have you considered leather for a brooch, Michelle? I really love mine. It adds a bit of edge to a feminine outfit and I bet it would look great with your new jackets and pearls.
http://www.etsy.com/transaction/19156425
It has four layers of red leather formed into a poppy flower and a small flat dark metallic button as the heart.
(the seller currently only has bags adorned with these leather flowers on offer, but I bet she'd consider a custom order if you asked her).

Michelle, I am sure Angie is going to suggest taking that handbag to a cobbler to adjust the strap. They can punch extra holes in the strap to allow you to adjust it shorter or longer than the existing holes.

I loved that bag on you, especially with the red tunic!

Angie, the ridiculousness of FiftyOne knows no bounds. At least I got all my stuff this time.
Great suggestions on the red tunic, thanks! I really don't want to give it up. I have an incredibly difficult time finding tunics that hit at the right length on my tall body, hence this question.
About the bag, the handles are too short and the shoulder strap is too long. For some reason I always feel self-conscious about wearing large bags like this as a cross-body style, plus they can drag on my neck.

Hmmm. Try unbuttoning the red tunic and wearing a camisole. Fit on your best bra. A few press studs might help too.

Is the bag strap too short or too long?

Melissa, those descriptions were absolutely amazing. Thank you so much!! Some of those soundd absolutely gorgeous!
Angie, thank you too for your tips on the right floral pin! Based on that, I can now unequivocally say that I want one made of a silkier fabric with a bit of black in it. Melissa, ideally I'd like to find one that's got a bit more sass to it so that it gives a modern edge to my chanel-esque jacket or grey boyfriend blazer. I still want the look to be harmonious, though.

Angie, your answer on tunics hellped a great deal. I'm still in the hunt for a white tunic shirt, then. And to answer your question on the NAS loot, did you know that that stupid FiftyOne international service won't allow me to do exchanges? So I probably have to give up the red tunic unless I can get it altered, and this makes me want to cry. I'm probably going to return the beautiful turquoise bag, too, because I can't get the strap to hit me on the place where I want it. Shoulderstrap placement is key, since I need my hands free to cope with Reva. I may also return the black and white scarf in favour of one of the tissue-weight cashmere ones (they have a two-tone black and white, but that's another subject for another thread).

Glad to know I wasn't the only one confused about tunic lengths! For those who don't know what tops Angie is describing for me, a tunic is officially one that hits at mid-thigh rather than just below the hips.

Khris, how can tunics be the same length as regular length tops? Do you mean bottom covering tunics but not thigh covering tunics?

Melissa, you rock.

Michelle, the long red blouse from the NAS is a tunic. The white ruffle shirt is not. Hope that clears things up. What's the verdict on the NAS loot, btw?

You'd look great with a floral pin! Try and find one with a bit of black to match up with your slacks and pencil skirt. That will pull things together nicely.

Floral pins can be dressy or casual. The ones made of felt (boiled wool) tend to look more casual, whereas the ones made of silky fabrics are dressy.

Michelle,

I am unfortunately just as confused as you about tunics, so hopefully some tunic experts will chime in!

About the floral pins, could you clarify whether you meant pin as in hair pin or pin as in brooch? Or maybe you could point me to a thread here where they have been discussed? For now, I am assuming you meant flower brooch.

I think a great flower brooch would be a fantastic way to embellish your lovely chanel-esque jacket! I went through a bit of a flower brooch phase last winter. I've seen ones I liked in a variety of fabrics and styles, so here are some examples I've seen on etsy (please let me know if my descriptions aren't helpful):

1). I thought of you recently when I saw this one because it reminds me of your teal/turquoise dress. It's what I would call an origami style flower brooch that feels more sleek and contained to me, with clean edges, while still having nice depth and visual interest. It has two layers of ten petals each one on top of the other and then within each layer two colors are used for the petals such that one color is nested inside the other. In this case, the colors are teal for the back layer and white for the uppermost layer. Then the whole thing is centered around a cute cream-colored vintage button which holds all the layers together. This seller has these available in many colors, but here is the link to the teal and white one:

http://www.etsy.com/listing/34.....shi-brooch

2). This one has a more organic feel with its lines and material. It's made of felted wool and consists of a bright red background with purple, violet, and blue (colors from seller's description) layered onto the red background to achieve depth. It has a five-petaled shape. The center is a dark-colored ball of felted wool surrounded by another layer of the red from the background. It's basically a single layer with additional layering in the center. It is quite large and dramatic:

http://www.etsy.com/listing/44.....-of-merino

3). This next one is simpler to my eye. It is a deep red poppy with numerous black glass beads in the center that effectively mimic poppy seeds. It is made of multi-layered petals cut from matte satin and then offset from one another. The layers themselves are each simple in shape, with three petals per layer. Here is the link:

http://www.etsy.com/listing/51.....v1_other_2

4). Now for my current favorite of the lot. This one is a gorgeous turquoise color that reminds me of turquoise jewelry from New Mexico. It is made of felted merino and has multiple layers, so it feels relaxed to me without being slopping or looking home-made. In the center, the piece is held together with a turquoise stone that has some of those characteristic lines running through it. Starting from the center, each layer gradually has both more petals and more color saturation, so that you go from a lighter turquoise at the center to a deeper teal at the bottom layer, where there are the most petals. The edges of the petals appear to be slightly scalloped, sort of like the edges of gingko leaves. This seller has some other lovely colors available. In fact, I may buy one of these myself. Here is the link:

http://www.etsy.com/listing/52.....wer-brooch

Those are just a few things that popped to mind. What colors do you think you might want in your flower brooch? Do you want a more classic feel to go with the jacket, or do you want something that plays nicely with the jacket while being more edgy or playful than the jacket?

À bientôt!

I think the shape of the top affects the length for a tunic. If the top is straight across at the bottom I would put the top as needing to be lower, mid thigh. If the top is curved at the bottom I think you can get away with a little shorter, bum covered. One factor that may affect this more, is what you wear underneath. I feel the shorter tunics require jeans/jeggings underneath. The longer one's probably leggings are ok.

I'm not sure about floral pins. To me anything in the shape of a flower would count as a floral pin. Probably the more 3D the pin (with feathers, beads etc) the more floral it becomes?

You got me on the tunic question too. I have no idea -- I would say mid-thigh, but like you, I've seen many tops described as tunics that to me just look like untucked shirts!

Loads of flower pins on Etsy -- some of the shops I have bookmarked to buy from:
http://www.etsy.com/shop/PinsAndNeedlesToo
http://www.etsy.com/shop/poppychicdesigns (she doesn't have many pins in stock right now but she does do custom orders, and her shoe clips are just too cute!)
http://www.etsy.com/shop/MGMart
http://www.etsy.com/shop/RiRiFisch (on the pricier side, but oh, so beautiful)

There are tons more shops but Etsy is notoriously difficult to search -- maybe someone could help do a search for you with colors/sizes in mind to narrow it down?

To me, a tunic hits anywhere from low hip to mid thigh. I have a couple of tunic tops that show the bottom curve of my tush. When I see something longer than halfway down the thigh, I think of it as a short dress, not a tunic.

Tunics can also be regular length tops- it has more to do with the cut and style than the length. For YLF purposes, a tunic needs to hit at least at mid thigh, though

In my mind, tunics are at least mid-thigh, but apparently that is an old-fashioned idea. A lot of what are being labeled as tunics strike me as shirts (hem hitting at the hip crease or higher).

Well, I am not of much help. I also wonder exactly what make a tunic a tunic. I think there is no standard definition, and so makers call all sorts of things tunics, and may often use that word to describe a top that is not meant to be tucked in. But I'm with you; I think of tunics as hitting me at mid-thigh or thereabouts.

I am 5' 4" and have some tunics that range in length, same as you describe.

Can't wait to hear what others have to say about floral pins!

Apologies for this latest round of blind-guy questions (tm), but I know you ladies will have the answers for these diverse queries.

1. I am so confused about tunics. Exactly how long does a top have to be to qualify as a tunic top? I see all kinds of so-called tunics with lengths of 31 and 32 inches, which on me hits just about the top of the thigh. In my head, tunics were always at least mid-thigh length. Are these measurements simply being distorted because of my height, or is derriere-coverage all it takes to make the grade as a general tunic? If so, should I still stick to longer styles in light of my very full thighs?

2. Floral pins: I'd love to acquire some and don't know where to start. Do floral pins need to be made of either silk or feathers in order to count? The brooch that came on the sash of my new black lace cocktail dress is flower-shaped...does that count as a glammed-up version? Am I right in thinking that a pretty silk floral pin in some sort of cheerful Michelle colour would be a fun way to spunk up my Chanel-esque jacket? If so, what should I look for and where should I hunt for it? Sadly most sales associates will look at me blankly if I come in and ask for help tracking down "an YLF-approved floral pin.: :)

Merci, mesdames!
