Ah I know the neckline issue of which you speak very well - especially when teaching, where an otherwise fine neckline makes you afraid to bend over lol! Have you considered a double magnet or brooch pin to hold it in place?

Aww, thanks, Angie. :)

LisaP, yes!! This is why so many people go down that Kibbe rabbit hole, LOL. Because (if interpreted the way I think he intended, though the man is so obscure he might as well write in another language...) he really isn't saying one body or beauty type should be preferred or here's how to dress to disguise your flaws...he's saying, look -- there are a bunch of different style essences, if you will. He emphasizes line over other style elements, but it's a useful corrective to some other systems -- and the idea is to harmonize your clothing with your "line." (Admittedly, it's a bit hard to tell what he means by that, but...)

I think I'll start a new thread about this...

This thread has had me thinking . The comments regarding who and what “type” can wear tulle opened my closed little mind to why some things just feel wrong . Things that I usually blame on my body type / weight and never dive deeper than that . I blame my weight issues for everything I think I can’t wear , when in fact it’s more of a style personality mismatch . Tulle is too dainty or too pretty for me , or in the case of an edgy plaid tulle like this skirt - too statement making . It suits you because of the gamine juxtaposition mentioned by someone above . Thanks for letting me work through this , lol.

Zaeobi, this one is a bit of a pain with a bra, too...it's not really off the shoulder, but because of the tie in front it tends to pull in weird ways and my bra straps do tend to show. Sometimes I can get it organized "just so" but others times...not so much. Since it's a thrifted top that I wear about once a year, that's ok -- it's really special occasion wear. But I would love a top with a neckline like this that I could wear more comfortably for every day.

Lyn, that skirt sounds amazing for you! Wear it for a dress up night at home -- that will give you courage.

Rachy, Irina -- thank you!

YLF, @Suz - between the shiny jewellery, makeup, textures & colours, you're positively glowing!

But I have to agree with @Carla, that the portrait/ ballet (not jewel, right?) neckline is the star of the show for me! I commiserate with how difficult it is to find this style these days though - I found a similar black top with faux feathers framing the neckline, but it was off the shoulders (a pain for bras!)

Stunning outfit Suz. Festive but individual.

As to who can wear tulle, I think anyone who wants to should wear it! I suspect it does suit some people's style more than others. I have often admired it but not found the right piece - but I don't know if it is "natural/breezy/relaxed" enough for my style, although it is bold and can be elegant.

Angie, thanks. It was really fun to get dressed up! And, yes, the boots have a stable heel, 2 inches or so, just enough, and the design of their footwear is so extraordinary that you really don't feel the heel at all.

I've tried the skirt on with the gilet and like it. Needs the right support act, of course, and that is a bit trickier. Balancing the weight of the fskirt/ gilet, and whatever top worn under with the right footwear. I will experiment more with this, though, because it would be a fun combination.

Janet, the skirt would not be warm enough for walking around a lot outdoors in winter. I'd have left it behind, too!

UmmLila, Column, Ms. Liz -- thank you! And Carla, thanks, too. It's hard to find this neckline but i love it whenever I do find it. Maybe it's a ballet neckline, not a portrait, strictly speaking. Not sure. But it's such a great style.

Suz, that skirt is one of the best items in your wardrobe! Have you tried it with our gilet?

KILLER to the Power of KILLER - all three iterations! Very elegant.

SOOOOO fun to dress up and socialize with friends! That IS an occasion. Oh, how we have missed it.....

The big earrings are smashing! Sooooo pretty.

The boots could not be more perfect for the skirt! A little higher than a riding boot, but not too high. JUST. SO. PERFECT! And very 2023. Glad you hauled out your La Canadiennes :)

I almost brought my skirt with me on this trip we’re on, but we’ll be doing a lot of city walking in the cold, and I was not feeling skirts for this! But the version with the jacket is pretty much exactly how I like to style that skirt.

What a fabulous outfit! The pieces work perfectly together and I just love that tulle skirt. I am learning so much from you ladies on how to use the pieces I own to pull together an outfit that is comfortable and reflects my personality.

Thanks, everyone! It was so much fun to do something social. There's been so little of that in our lives since our move, partly due to Covid and partly due to being in a new city and on an island. Sigh...

Suntiger, re La Canadienne -- yes! And you had one of their boots in your Finds. I hope it does work. I will say that they tend to fit (I think?) on the larger side or perhaps are sized as truly EU sizing. So, I wear a 37 EU or 6.5 or 7 in US sizes, but I always order the 7 in boots in US sizing because otherwise I'd have trouble fitting socks, etc. With La Canadienne I take the 6.5 every time. And I do not need orthotics or extra insoles or anything with their footwear -- it just works for me. Hmm. Thinking maybe I should buy it despite the cost and just baby it like crazy to keep it going....

Carol, that's a great analysis. The design of this skirt is different from many tulle skirts in that it is not a lot of tiny gathered pleats -- it's a few well-placed boxy pleats -- and there are only two layers of tulle, so it's not "bunchy."

Lisa, thank you and yes, this is the skirt Janet also has. I'm glad I got it -- I think maybe I have you to thank for the original link, or maybe it was Janet? Not sure. I know both of you were looking at it.

Bijou, it's so true -- a dressy skirt is easy to dress down enough for a variety of occasions. Or to dress up! I've worn this one more formally, too, with a jacquard top and pumps.

Xtbay, Sarah, cjh, thank you!

Dee, you are right, I think -- it's a question of the balancing of all elements. When Janet and I saw this skirt we each thought it could fit with our style and it does, even though I don't think either of us would wear tulle in another colour.

Olive Green -- thank you! That is high praise. Maybe I can get a bit part if there's another series? :)

Vildy, thank you. That's interesting about the hair. It's in a bit of a mess at the moment (need a haircut) so I had to get out the smoothing iron for the bangs -- maybe that helped the look!

Cardiff Girl -- yes -- avoiding the sweet sugar colours is the way to go (for me, at least!)

Jessikams, I laughed so hard at that cat comment. My friend's cat is a demon, so I definitely wouldn't want her in my lap! Luckily, she's also human-avoidant.

Sally, I like it best with the jacket, too -- balances the boots. Plus, I had not worn the jacket in a while and had another of those -- why the heck am I not wearing this more often? moments.

Synne -- maybe tulle would work for you -- it is stiffer and you would wear it on the bottom. But not in a fairy-light colour, I think?

Anchie, thank you -- and I'll bet that skirt looks fab on you! Great colour.

Slim cat -- the skirt was very inexpensive and a good purchase for the price. It's got closet longevity.

Well, I do love the skirt and agree with your assessment. But. That. Top. The portrait neckline is so beautiful on you! ❤️

These are great on you, and good to know about La Canadienne! If they work for you, they should work for me.

I think I'm too curvy to wear tulle, even at my lowest weight, and maybe too "serious" in look if that makes sense. I don't think I have a drop of Gamine in me!

Well, whether or not you captured the sparkle of the scarf, I'd say YOU certainly sparkle here, Suz!

I like your analysis of why this tulle skirt works for you, and how you make it feel like you.

I don't know much about types, but it has been suggested I fall into some kind of 'natural' category, and I carry a lot of my weight in my midsection, so I have been trying to think of what would make tulle natural to me:

I think it would need to have a dropped yoke to avoid adding extra volume at my waist. Shape similar to my brown velvet skirt

Not sure about colour. I like the idea of it being bronze, but that might just duplicate my velvet skirt, so maybe charcoal or navy?

I'd for sure wear with a stompy or stompy-ish boot -- and if I ever find a dressier boot or evening sandal, well, I'd try that, too.

I'd probably pair it with a very simple, fluid knit top with a crew neck. A bit of jewelry if dressing 'up'. Otherwise, I am usually an accessory minimalist The skirt would be the accessory!

Idea of a moto jacket has always appealed to me, and I think I have finally found one that will work for the odd time I need it. That's a combo I think could work for me.

I would also play with pairing it with my new (thrifted) bomber jacket for a more casual, playful look.

Interesting exercise, Suz! Thanks for helping me think it through. (This also gives me some ideas for getting more use from the velvet skirt I already have.)
