Nemosmom, I think feathered pants sound cool! This article and the Fashionista one both mention the danger of dancers’ attire catching on fire. I can’t imagine accepting that occupational hazard. Interesting to read about how specific dance moves came with different tutus.

Star, I think I do that too, but maybe my “toughening it up” is mostly in my mind, lol. I am so glad whenever wearing boots and other flats with dresses is acceptable—need to go add some comments on early memories to CarolS’s thread—because I see it as letting me wear the swishy-swish and enjoy that “girlish”/ingenue mentioned above, which in my mind goes right along with rebelliousness and being naughty in a good way. So I might not look so tough, but I feel ready for action & fun.

Today I saw someone wearing this look perfectly—pale rainbow tulle skirt, pink sateen hoodie, white athletic-looking shirt underneath, white glossy boots with black laces and thick black soles, coiled curls worn naturally—perfection. She was 5, or maybe 6.

Thanks SF for the research. If I had a tulle skirt today I would only wear it with some masculine element, like stompy boots, denim jacket, moto, studded jewelry or handbag, etc. This is exactly how I prefer to wear any overly feminine clothing; I need to toughen it up a bit. Interesting, ha!

Thanks, SF, for sharing the very interesting history behind tulle, which I have simply always thought of as polyester. I love the concept of subverting the original connotation by pairing it with more traditionally masculine elements such as boots and leather jackets. :-)

Thank you for posting that, Stagiaire Fash!! That is absolutely fascinating. I love reading about the history of fabrics. It’s hard to imagine silk tulle! I’ve always loved the look of tulle but the versions I tried on were scratchy, & puffy right where I didn’t want puff. (Puffy couldn’t stop me from wearing tiered & Indian cotton skirts though!)

I found this, from Fashionista.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/f.....on-history

Here’s the money quote:

Historians believe that, at first, tulle was painstakingly woven by hand using methods similar to lace production starting around the 1700s. Modern-day tulle (also known as bobbinet) was first produced after a complex weaving machine that could efficiently produce the fabric was patented in 1809. [1] After that, tulle became integral to high-end wedding gowns, evening dresses and lingerie. Once a prohibitively expensive and luxurious textile made of silk, tulle eventually became readily available to the masses thanks to the introduction of cheaper synthetic fibers such as nylon, rayon and polyester.

If I decide to get something tulle, I’m glad to know there are versions made of renewable fibers rayon and silk. Wonder how expensive they are?

And a possible explanation of why it’s popular now

While the tutu has historically symbolized discipline, purity and beauty (for the sake of the male gaze), wearing a tutu-esque skirt alongside, say, combat boots and fishnet tights subverts the garment’s original connotation and makes a statement against the values it traditionally represented. Some theorists have also noted that embracing the tutu look serves as a way for a woman to communicate her power and individuality without sacrificing her desire to embrace her "girlish femininity," an ephemeral quality that women are told to give up in order to become respectable wives and mothers.

Sounds good to me! I think we often are attracted to a look partially because of values attached to it that we might not realize on a conscious level.

I personally would probably not wear this outfit in this iteration. Gail herself blogged that this was an experiment and she would have preferred stompy boots but it is the one type of boot she does not have. I love the individual pieces and the colors!

Ophelia I don't know what tulle was made of before polyester, interesting question! I have only ever had one tulle skirt in the 90's and it was not hot to wear, maybe if the lining is more breathable it is workable.

Thanks for looking!

Wow I LOVE that skirt. I love the look of tulle but won't wear it because the only tulle in my price range would be pure polyester. It's also inevitably wrong for my shape.
What was tulle made of before the days of poly?
