I don't mind the look when it's cleanly tucked like in your example photos. On me, it almost never works because my skinnies tend to be slightly baggy at the ankle (because I have skinny ankles but wider calves/thighs) so they just end up looking bunchy and messy. It also drives me nuts when they pop out and won't stay tucked. All this means I don't tuck into boots shorter than around mid-calf, although in some cases I can get away with combat/hiking style boots with visible chunky socks above the top to sort of raise the calf height.

Gryffin, thanks for your thoughtful reply. I don't follow every trend, but I like to be aware of them and take my picks, and as Jussie said so well, I don't want to look too dated. I think all the answers in this thread have given me a better idea of what's current and what's still "acceptable" regarding skinnies.

Lesley, thanks for the link, I enjoyed watching the video. I do actually have a pair of cut off skinnies like hers, but I only wear them in summer with sandals or my canvas Tom's. In winter I need socks, but I don't want them to show, and my booties are not high enough to close the gap.

I have definitely done it when I'm in a hurry and can't be bothered! But it's not my favorite look. I found this video from the adorable Shana on The Mom Edit to be really helpful to see all the different ways to use this look, even if you're not a jeans cutter yourself.

Eva - it depends on the boots and the pants. The madewell 9" are super skinny at the ankle, they naturally tuck themselves into high and low boots which I am totally good with - I wear them with the Frye Shane that way. fI slightly wider leg skinny, I would scrunch or roll on top because that would be more comfortable. Eva, I can only tell you what makes me happy is to wear what I think looks good and is comfortable. Personally, I don't ask because I'd rather lead my own fashion parade then follow someone else's. Not that feedback can't be incredibly helpful - but wearing or not wearing something because it's in or out of favor, well, maybe I'm too old and onery for that!! LOL!! I hope you'll wear what you feel fab in and embrace that happy spot!!

Thanks everyone!
KMM, I'm glad to know there is a fellow tucker out there. ;)
Molly Mac, Style Fan and RobinF: Thanks, I will.
Always trying, thanks for the validation. I like the look, but apparently it's less current, like Suz said. I think I am ok with that though. I have decided that trendy is not going to be in my list of style adjectives. ;)
Suz, thanks for the explanation and the compliment.
Bj1111, I live in a city that is not very fashion-forward, so not too much confidence required. ;)
Alicewonderland that's a good point about pants width, and I agree about pic 7.
Jussie, "not too dated", I like that. I should include that in my list of style adjectives, since trendy is out for me as well.
Brooklyn, I have one shorter pair of skinnies that tend to escape as well. I will try and make that look more deliberate...
Torontogirl, -20C! Wow. I am feeling cold at -1C here.
Kkards, makes sense.
Angie, I like the equestrian look with tall boots a lot! My favourite way to wear skinnies.
Chirico, interesting that it's also not the norm where you live. I was wondering as well if this is an EU thing.
FashIntern, as I understand the (apparently more current) alternative would be to roll the pants up to the top of the boot.
Suntiger, sounds like a practical solution.
Janet, I think I know what you mean. As others have said pic 7 looks a bit stuffed, so I agree that that would be something to avoid.

I say do what works so that nothing looks stuffed in — you know what I mean? If the result looks like you’re trying to fit too much fabric into a boot leg, I wouldn’t do it. But otherwise I think it’s fine.

I tuck skinnies into tall boots, or looser mid shaft boots, but not the sock boots. My short snow boots sometimes Ill tuck, though a little tight, since they have faux fur on top, or just scrunch on top.

I don't see how you'd do otherwise. My pants aren't exactly skinnies, and the legs end up inside my ankle boots all the time. Keeping skinnies out would be extremely difficult and take up all of one's time. Who wants to do that?

I second Style Fan's response: wear what makes you feel fab!
I wear skinnies with low boots rolling the jeans and showing about 1 cm of skin. That's not the norm around here. The norm is what you usually do and showed in the Esprit pictures. Maybe it's more of and EU thing? I don't know. My final take is in my first sentence, anyway.

My longer skinnies aren’t super skinny and aren’t that long (about ankle length), so they tend to want to escape my boots if I try to tuck them into a lower shaft boot. So I just let them scrunch over the top of the boot when I’m wearing a lower shaft boot. I do tuck into higher shaft boots that are more rugged in style (eg combat boots, moto boots) and also into knee high boots. For some reason with more refined ankle boots like the ones shown here I prefer cropped jeans that go over the boot.
But I don’t think there is a right or wrong. Just personal preference.

This conundrum is why I mainly wear ankle baring shoes, rather than boots. Of course it’s easier for me as I’m in a temperate climate.
The other thing is, my skinnies aren’t super-skinny, so they often naturally just sit over the outside of booties.
Occasionally I wear my cowboy-knee leggings tucked into little teal booties, I think it looks fine. I compensate for the skinny leggings with an oversized sweater. However I aim for “not too dated” as my standard, rather than “on trend”, because.....I’m just not
particularly trendy lol.
I think it just really depends on the exact pants and shoes involved, and how those proportions work together.
Like in pic 7 it’s all too narrow, and the legs look “tottering” kind of. Whereas the pics with a slightly chunkier boot look fabulous imho.
I’m thinking the cuffed jeans look has been so massively popular, that’s it’s gonna soon be dropped like a hot potatoe and go right out again. Of course this is just my own prediction and I’m very often wrong ;).

For me it depends a lot on how wide the booties are at the ankle. In general if it’s wide like in 2,3,5,6,8 then I tuck. If boots are narrow ankle, esp if narrower than the actual pants then I will roll to the top of the boot. I’m not a fan of the bunching in 7.

i tuck into a taller boot, otherwise, i can;t make it across fields of snow across the parking lot at work.

it's more current with a slouchy boot if the shaft is tall. i do like it tucked into narrow shaft heeled boots, but it is not a current look so you have to be confident or just not care about this.

tucking into hiking boots or docs/doc-like short boots are very now in a 90s way.

Nothing wrong with this look in my opinion. It's maybe a bit less "current" than not tucking them, but so what? Your velvet pants with booties look really nice. Peter Pan-like. :)

I tend to prefer tucked skinnies with a taller boot (mid calf or knee high) but that's just because the proportions are better on me personally. I do wear booties with skinnies all the time -- usually cropped skinnies, though, not tucked. But the effect is not dissimilar.

I wear mainly full length skinny jeans and pants at the moment, because of the weather and because I really like the look of skinnies tucked into tall boots.

I do however wear them with booties/ankle boots as well, also tucked in. I have never thought twice about it, and I see lots of people doing the same where I live, but now I realised that YLF maybe does not approve of this? Or maybe just under specific circumstances, with specific types of boots/booties? Or is this a regional thing?

Here is a thread by KMM where Angie advises against tucking, which first alerted me to this:

https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....lsea-boots

And here is a recent thread by SarahD8 with several comments about how to wear skinnies with ankle boots or sock boots, and the consensus seems to be to roll, scrunch, or wear the skinnies over the boots. La Pedestrienne suggests you can tuck if the shaft is higher than ankle height. Suz also gives some examples of when she would tuck.

https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....t-footwear

I don't think I will stop wearing my skinnies this way, but I would rather break the rules knowingly than being oblivious to them. ;)

So what's the verdict? Does it depend on the height of the boots/booties whether you tuck? Or on the level of dressiness? Or are there other factors?
Thanks!
