I was at a drag race a few weeks back with a polkadot umbrella and sunglasses and my hubster hated it and said "know your audience.". Well, frankly, I'd never want to dress like "that audience.". Literally, it translates as: "You do bad type/style". As in "it gives a bad impression of you", "it's bad form". </p> <p>Most dictionaries will show "to look disreputable". As in, to look bad. </p> <p>But what I find interesting is that while in English bad is something you "look" like, in French, it's something you do. As if you're doing it on purpose. And if not, you are then indeed doing, committing a faux-pas. In English, to "look" bad class could be something that happens to you, almost as if external, like a bird dropping on your head. You happened to look disreputable, it could be by chance even. In French, not. You are the instigator. You are the one willingly walking into the dropping, if you will, whether you intended it or not.</p> <p>Actually, there is something I like about my DH's comment. I did it on purpose. I did it.
