I have a white Vince boat neck tee, and yes, you can wear it alone. It is substantial enough that your bra doesn't show through. I wear mine under all my boat neck sweaters, but it could easily stand alone.

For those recommending Uniqlo, is the size chart accurate? I'm looking at a solid XL based on their measurements, but I'm more often in a medium or large at other retailers.

I buy a lot of men's tees (mostly with prints on at concerts) and it's true that the quality is far superior to their counterparts in womenswear. I wear them a bit loose with the sleeves cuffed and they work just fine.

Why not try a few shirts from the men's department? Cut and fit varies, so you may find a shape that works for you.

I can't believe it but I have had EXACTLY the same issues with my Everlane U neck tees as Jenava. Stains don't come out, and small holes develop from semi-tucking.

The best made cheap tees I have purchased have come from Uniqlo, Gap, H&M and Urban Outfitters (the $25 range ones). Zara tees are the worst in my experience. Lose their shape, seams twist, and stains don't come out. For some reason, the better the fabric, the easier it is to remove stains.

My Madewell tees are so-so, as are J Crew.

Otherwise I have purchased really nice tees that hold up well from Three Dots and Velvet. Splendid are OK, but quality is not so different from Gap and cost more.

I don't wear tees very often except in summer, but I have that Vince tee that Jeneva mentions and it was such a great purchase. I got mine on sale, one in white and one in navy. At first I doubted my sanity (I am paying what for a t-shirt???), but it turns out these are fabulous as a winter layering piece that can also stand alone because of the interesting dropped shoulder and envelope neckline. The white one works with almost anything. And I can make the navy one into a faux dress with a navy skirt or a "jumpsuit" with navy crepe jogger pants. I do find the modal fabric is on the warm side, so for me these are fall/ winter/ early spring items only.

I also have the same linen boatneck tees that Bonnie G. mentions. Those are great but quite sheer so you may need a cami or tank, especially with light colours like white. Having said that, they're amazing layering pieces. The linen has lovely drape.

You are right about how hard it is to find good tee shirts. I'm still wearing the linen painter tee shirts I got at J. Crew this summer (a few colors are still available and on sale) and have ordered some painter tee shirts for fall. I order a larger size and they fit the way I like. These shirts are often on sale. Looking forward to reading the comments you get for more recommendations.

The ones I've liked the best are from Eddie Bauer. I have a lot of long sleeve crew neck EB tees that fit great and wear well. They aren't cut too low, and they don't make me look fat - from the cut on the sides.

This spring I bought several short sleeve crew neck tees from Lands End. I don't like these as much. The knit is tighter or something, and it's more like wearing a woven shirt than a knit, and they make me look kind of blocky. At least they aren't too low cut. I have to give those away.

Ah yes, I am also on the eternal T-shirt search! I am remembering the days when my college roommate would have her parents send us Ts from Germany because they were made from the most amazing cotton.
I have T's from Gap, Madewell, Loft, Old Navy, Walmart, Target, Whole Foods & Eddie Bauer. Out of these the only ones that didn't pill or get holes or some other malady are the Gap, Eddie Bauer & Whole Foods. Still have not found t-shirt nirvana. Some people really like 3 Dots but that is getting to $50 a T.

Jenava - I seriously adore vince sweaters (my favorite, really) so I will wait for the next sale and then try their tshirts! Especially if they last, I bet I'll love them. I typically try to find a cheaper tshirt since they rarely last more than a season, but sounds like that's not the case with this brand, which would be great

I've been wearing Everlane U-neck 100% cotton tees for summer and spring. For some reason I find that if I get grease on them it doesn't come out (anyone have tips for getting this out? I've tried resolve and now oxyclean pretreatment on them; the oxyclean seems to work on fresher stains). I also find that if I wear them with jeans eventually they'll get that little tiny hole in the front. I do like the shape of them, though. they're a little bit a-line and a bit higher in the front than the back. i find the shape works really well for current styles of bottoms.

That said, for winter I'm going to try Nordies BP. long sleeve scoop neck tees. I don't love that they have a VERY high polyester content, because I know that means they'll pill.

But, Everlane's long sleeve tee is crew neck with a pocket (so not great for layering, esp. for big boobs!), and rayon, so it shrinks if you put it in the dryer. When I was pregnant I had the PERFECT long sleeve grey tee. Irony.

I also wear this boatneck tee from Vince. I have it in three colors and it has lasted for several years. It's a bit clingy, so I am looking for something more loose, but it excellent for layering except where I need a scoop neck. It's also pricey, but worth it if you can afford it.

The Everlane tees I kept (I did one of their box try on things when they offered one) were the basic vnecks. They're thinner but I haven't had any problems with twisting or pilling, and I don't baby them. I agree that I wish their stuff was more consistent (and that they offered a wider variety of sizes; it's ridiculous that they don't even have XLs anymore).

I had some Caslon tees from a few years ago that were great, but every year they seem to change the fabrication and they were really really thin this year. Lands End tees are really sturdy (ditto LL Bean) but they are so heavy that they don't look very current to me, rather dated.

I haven't tried one of Boden's plain tees in a while but they might be a good option to try. Their knitwear is usually top notch.

For just a basic tee I really like the Landsend scoop neck. I have some from Target that aren't too bad either. Old Navy is totally hit or miss, I have a few that are great and I've had for years others that shrink or fall apart the first time you wash them.

Stephanie - I have liked some Stem items from Nordstrom, so I'll check them out. Plus I love the ease of shopping nordstrom (and getting points by using my card).

Loft is so hit or miss! I've had the best luck there but agree items can shrink horribly or get holes super fast...other tees wash fine and last a long time. I wish it was more consistent.

Another forum member recommended the Stem tees to me from Nordstrom. I can't speak to them yet since I haven't ordered one, but I really like the drape...maybe it's worth trying? I'm planning on ordering one to try soon.

That's good to know Duchess. Sounds like something for me to skip for now. I'm not one to gently wash my tshirts!
