Tarzy, you shouldn't settle for anything that's less than fabulous. I like the blue striped EB shirt for you, I think that deeper blue would be so pretty on you.

I have to defend the Theory shirt, I tried one recently and the fit was breathtaking, I have never had a button-down shirt fit me so well. It was way out of my price range so I did not get it. If it holds up well with washes, I'd think it's definitely worth the price.

Tarzy, I share your astonishment at those prices. Different brands have different fits, but there are limits! I just know that when I tried on a couple of shirts (consignment shop), I just had to have them because they looked so good. It was unexpected. Mine were a striped Ann Taylor and a black Gap shirt, but I have a very small bust that often doesn't fill out a top as the designer intended. As far as colors, you can't go wrong with a color that looks fabulous on you or with white/cream.
Your vest(s) should pair well with shirts. I like wearing a jacket buttoned to nip in at the waist over a fitted button-down that often peeks out from under the bottom of the jacket. I also like to roll back the cuffs of the shirt and maybe the jacket too. And try flipping up the back of the shirt collar to see how you feel about that look. Have fun

Maya - yes! I forgot to ask that part! Does anyone have suggestions about how to wear them? I'm not a big fan of cardigans on me, especially with a shirt underneath. It just seems like a lot of fabric and bunching. But that look is so fab on everyone else here. I would like to try the shirts with my brown vest, and I'm also looking for another vest (maybe a blue?) I think that's a look I could really get into. I'm starting to feel I need to figure out my color scheme here. Maybe blue is not the way to go? Although I do like a blue shirt with jeans. Hmmm.

Bella - I do like the red. Maybe that's a better direction for me than blue?

Joy - very interesting. I think I need to try on some more brands. I do believe in good fabric and fit, but it's a bit hard to understand why this white shirt is $190!

Or this one, for $245!

Tarzy, don't settle for a shirt if you don't feel fabulous in it. I used to think a buttondown shirt was a buttondown shirt, even fitted ones. Then I tried different brands on and, oh my! Some just immediately look better than others, fit-wise. Try long sleeve length vs 3/4 sleeve length too. Also look at length untucked to be long enough with pants if you are wearing a shorter vest or jacket or cardi over it. The French blue fitted looks like a winner, especially with it's easy care.

Tarzy, those EB shirts have a really nice shape (especially the solid one, I can't tell from the pictures whether the striped one is cut the same or not). I can't really say if it's the right blue for you, the color swatches are really small and I can't get other pictures to work. However, how about that gorgeous red the model is wearing? I can totally see it on you, you'd look fabulous!
I think the Gap shirt is nice, I don't think it looks fussy but of course save your $s for something else if you don't feel amazing in it.

I don't think a button-up shirt is ever going to be fabulous on its own. Buttondowns come to life when paired with other fabulous pieces.

http://youlookfab.com/2008/09/.....tton-down/

I think either blue would be fine, with or without stripes. But the true test will depend on how you decide to wear them.

I'm still trying to make the woven shirt work for me. And - I'm also trying to add some blue to my wardrobe, to get away from my vampire-like love of black.

Someone had suggested I try an open v-neck button-down instead of the ones that button all the way up, and I think I do prefer them. I tried the Eddie Bauer shirt in the store, and I like the fit. I am considering ordering the French blue, which I think is a good classic color, and maybe the blue stripe, neither of which they carry in the store. I'm not sure which blue would be best for me. I'm also new to stripes, so I'm not sure about that one either.

http://tinyurl.com/5ojd7j
http://tinyurl.com/86t4a7

I also tried this shirt from GAP, and I'm not crazy about it. I think it's "okay," but my new fashion resolution includes buying things that are "fabulous." I'm not sure this shirt is that. I think I might prefer something a bit less fussy. I'm also not sure if this is the right blue for me?
