Dee, thanks! I may just have to take ownership of this shirt - DH hardely ever wears dress shirts any more. Agree that a looser sweater might be better.

Star, I too like the untucked shirt under a sweater look, but I'm so short that it's very difficult to get the proportions right. Most of the time I try it the shirttails look too long and sloppy.

Thank Sisi, Runcarla, kkards, jaime .

Pirouette, thanks, and I will have to try the semi tuck thing some more, it's a new thing for me. And thanks for the encouragement!

Suz, wise comments! Yes I love classic pieces, yes I love and NEED layering. I agree her accessories make her outfits more feminine. Hmm Feminine Preppy ... a moniker to consider!

Kate - I've never thought of wearing men's shirts because I didn't think they would fit me right but now I'm going to give them a try.

Robin F good eye, the belt may in fact be too large. I haven't' worn them in so long that I didn't notice! I have to return anther item at the same time so I'll see if they have a size down in the belt

Thanks LIsa, and yes Bengela is SO well accessorized!!! It's her signature I think. Fun preppy...

Thanks Firecracker! If you are thinking of he Loft sweater vest that a bunch of us were trying a few months ago, I ended up returning it. The neck band was too high on my short neck and annoying. A different one could work. On that specific outfit of B's you linked to with the olive sweater vest ... I positively drooled over that one for a LONG time! Yes would need to modify the colors just a bit ..

Bijou, thanks. Grown up preppy ... hmm food for thought! I think Bengela's style is much more bold than I'd ever feel comfortable with, but who knows?

...so the suggestion/observation seems to be a moniker of fun/feminine/grown up preppy a la Ralph Lauren Very interesting!!

The belt makes it for me - fun and a great colour on you. This grown-up preppy style suits you, I immediately thought of Ralph Lauren.

Bengala does this style in a maximal way, there is scope to add bold accessories and pattern mix to make the look your own.

Big yes from me. I think the outfits are conventionally flattering, too, fwiw.

Checking our your inspo blogger, I thought I could see you doing a version of this one (in your colors): https://www.instagram.com/p/DEXyvxMuTGi/

Don't you have a chunky vest like that in ivory? I could see it over your shirt and jeans combo here, with the leopard belt.

Both outfits get my yes vote. This is preppy with a fun twist because of the printed belt. And I agree with others, anyone can wear a belt, it's all about which one you find (this looks great to my eye) and how you style it.

What jumped out at me, is how well accessorized Bengala is, she clearly has a good eye for details.

How fun you're trying out a new look, it looks like a winner to me!

I really like both of these on you! I'm surprised because I don't like tucking or belts for myself but this is a great look for you. Fun to find a style tweak. I vote keep the belt (but it isn't too big is it? Looks a bit long but hard to tell.)

I love the fit of the shirt on you, and it looks good belted. The sweater over the shirt is a great combination for you. The belt is great. Cut the tags!

I’ve been wearing and loving men’s tees and sweaters for years because I get a much better fit in menswear. I don’t really wear shirts much, but if I did, I would certainly go to the menswear section for those too.

I love this for you, Chris! I hear you on the feel of the layers, but this sweater looks fantastic over the shirt, and I love the look of the shirt on you also! (Please keep the belt. Useful item.)

I think one reason you like this Instagrammer's style is that it relies on classic pieces like those you naturally gravitate toward and layering (which you also need to do with your climate, if for no other reason!), but she does something different to individualize the look and feminize it -- the accessories and the types of layering she does, and her specs and hair and makeup (plus the jewellery) make it unique to her. It is elevated, feminine preppy.

I like your belt I have a leopard belt and find it goes with lots of things. I would prefer the jumper semi tucked at the front so that you could still see some of the belt.

I do wear men's button downs although in a different way. Untucked and sometimes a sweater over. The sweater can be a bit tighter than the shirt, I like how it can reign in the volume of the shirt (the shirt tails are exposed, also hides my tum :)). I love the belt. I found my cheetah belt so versatile it wore out!

Oh yes, I think this new look works for you. Love the structure of the button down and the colour of the stripes are flattering. Your sweater works pretty well, nice colour but probably a looser one might be even better to get that blouson effect. I like that belt, adds some additional interest, and works with it all too.

Thanks Angie! You know I do love some of Ralph Lauren's looks but I find the majority of their clothes are cut too slim for my body, which is so unfortunate since they DO have petite sizes. I think there is one shirt style ("classic fit" or something) that works but it's super limited in petite color/pattern choices. This sweater just feels a little too tight over the shirt, in part because the shirt has a little bulk to it. The sweater untucked could work. Thanks for the encouragement!

All waists can look great in a belt, Chris! It's about finding the pieces and combinations that adhere to your sartorial preferences, and make you feel good in the look.

Fun to try something new :)

In pic #2, you can head straight to the Ralph Lauren head office in NYC and model for them. KILLER cute. Love it! Personally, I like the fit of the sweater here - unless you feel the shirt is bunching too much underneath?

I vote keep the belt! You wear it well. Fab with your hair, and fun with the boots you showed in Finds.

An exciting way to begin the new year!

I recently discovered an Instagrammer who wears a lot of button down shirts, structured jackets, jeans, and lots of jewelry. More about her below. She recommends men’s shirts because they are often stiffer fabrics than women’s, which helps the collars hold their shape better. I LOVE her style, although I doubt I'd ever wear as much jewelry as she does.

I've been trying to break out of traditional-figure-flattery thinking, which might say my waist is not small enough to wear belts, so I tried a new idea. I borrowed an LLBean Blue/White shirt from DH. I brought home this leather leopard belt from Mango and have to decide in the next few days whether to return it, so the tags are still on. Democracy baby bootcut jeans. I’d wear this outfit with brown booties (shown in finds), not the ones I have on here for a quick couple of photos. I LOVE the fit of the shirt! This sweater is a little too snug for tucking and blousing, but a slightly looser one could work. I like the two collars together.

Would love your honest feedback!! Tweaks? TIA!

The instagrammer is Bengala Holmes. https://www.instagram.com/bengelaholmes/.

She and I could not be more different in every way, but something about her structured style just really appeals to me. Her adventures in thrifting that she posts are fun and sometimes really funny!
