Thank you for your great replies.

Beth Ann, I like the idea of a shadow style. I know that there will be times when I will want to go all out with prints and colour, so I will want to keep some special things that don't fit within my newer look eg. a beautiful Camilla dress and some Sass and Bide and other favourite pieces. I will also try to leave colour to the weekend. Can I create a weekend colour capsule that overlaps with some of my simple B & W looks I wonder?

I'm going to try the dress with something sharper, and I'll see how it looks with top #4 over, thanks Suz.

Perhaps the dress is an example of your shadow style? It would be quite alright to keep a few items that are outliers, if they make you really happy when you wear them and don't distract you from you core look.

Love the first top!

How would the top in the last outfit work over the dress in 2? I think you can definitely make that dress work for you with a sharper architectural jacket and simpler shoes, in any case.

LOVE #1 -- works exactly with your new direction.

#1 is a standout and seems to fit right into your goal. Try the dress in #4 with black flares underneath instead of the skirt and without the jacket. The dress is terrific.

Coco, I think the dress in #2 is stunning but it's the jacket that I feel lets it down. A more structured architectural jacket would work much better :)

And yes, different bottoms and a sharp jacket over the new top.

It is hard because I have always liked your WIW!!

I like them all - but agree simpler shoes will be better with 2. I think 1 is very well in sync with your new style direction, and 2 is a lovely dress for nights out.

I like these all a lot... I'm in a black and white phase... I very much like the JB dress because it also appeals to the Spanish in me (I'm also going through a Spanish phase)... and to that end, I think different shoes are in order. Like dance shoes, something with a single strap.

Thank you Janet, unfrumped, Angie and Astrid. Astrid, it's one of my favourite dresses and I so much want to keep it! It's probably not a great start but I'm hoping it can somehow fit into my future pared down working wardrobe of things I love.

#1 looks great and seems to fit well into your Pinterest board from what I've seen. But I have to say, Pinterest board or not, I just LOVE the dress in #2/3. Maybe it's not the kind of dress you would buy today looking at the new style you're going for, but I think that doesn't mean you have to get rid of it. I think if you are further along the road you might find a way to make it work. Please keep it!

Love # 1!

I'm not that good at honing someone else's style direction.
But I can relate to editing and being careful what add back.
Not buying is a good approach , and next best is, 3 words: DON'T CUT TAGS!
Meaning, you're trying to create a new look, but also may be in a bit of limbo as to what you really want. Sometimes then I find I'll " need" to bring something home or order online-- size sells out or sales fever or can't see in person, whatever-- and I may think it works but may not be using my highest " bar" for judgement. Or for me, I'll be really busy at work and just don't have time to sort it out. Then in a week I'll do some tryons and reflect. My biggest pitfall is items that are " good"- good neckline, or sleeves, or something--but UPON REFLECTION lack that super- " comfortable( meaning feel good wearing in every respect) , versatile,
want to wear every day quality that I am learning is the key to good items for me.
Since I DO have lot of things I love, I was able to take a little time to create a group of outfits that fit that bill and use them to keep reminding myself see, if it can be as good or better than THIS , then that's what will work.
If not, then it's likely an item will get worn once or twice but then take a backseat.
So I used a big holding zone to start, because I still didn't trust whether item A of item B were better, and wanted to put some through their paces and see what pattern emerged- was comfort? Confidence? Color?

#1 is terrific. I like the second dress much better without the jacket. I would try styling it with different shoes -- the very detailed shoes seem to fight a bit with the detail on the dress. Maybe a sleek, simple, peep-toe bootie or something like that.

Thank you Deborah and Stephanie.
Deborah, please be honest, I need it. Unfortunately I love the JB dress, and I feel I can't get rid of it just yet. It has a very interesting hemline which I think suits my new direction, but perhaps it needs to be worn differently. I like your suggestion Stephanie. Maybe I could also try it worn as a skirt under a chunky cropped sweater.

The top in #4 is brand new. Would it look better under a black blazer or with a different skirt...perhaps in the same colour for a monochrome look. I'll have a play before I write it off.

This has shown me that I definitely need to stop shopping for now.

#1 seems spot on with your new direction and looks fabulous on you. I also think you could swap the jacket in #2 for a structured blazer with interesting lines...maybe in white? Can't wait to see more photos of your new wardrobe direction!

I think 1 is great and in line with the direction you seem to be going in. Hope I'm not being harsh but I do think #2/3 and the top in #4 could have you "lingering in the past;).

It's not that I don't like them (and I'm a huge fan of Jason Brundsen) but the are not "sharp".

I'm still purging..5 garbage bags to the thrift store and 2 large tubs of things that I can't quite get rid of yet. It hurts to throw out expensive things like DVF dresses...but I'm over them, and I can't face Ebay.

Anyway, here are a couple of things i've been playing with.

The first is a Zara top with a simple tube skirt. I think this would be good for work this Summer.
No 2 is a Jayson Brundsen dress with little jacket and no 3 is without the jacket. This would be for a dressy work do. It might look better with my hot pink bootie style heels.
No 4. is a work look, again with the simple tube skirt and a boxy top with raffia trim.

Thoughts? Have I taken my first steps or am I still lingering in the past?
