I prefer classics, and clothing is one of the items in its list. Thereby, I do not try new trends as long as they do not seem fittable to my wardrobe. Nonetheless, if there is some outfit I fancied, I'll wear it even if the trend is already "out of the game". Being a conservative, I cannot agree that new trend is always something one should rush into; for me, it is an item to compare to, rather than to accept right away.

Never say never. I remember at the start of the 1970's seeing flared and bell-bottomed pants and saying "I'll never be caught dead in those" and then we wore nothing else for most of the decade. So the eye does adjust, given enough time.

I was also one who would resist buying something too trendy because by the time it became available at my price range, I was afraid it would be on the way out, and I didn't want stuff to look dated as i expect my clothing to work for me for a long time. This is less of an issue now, as fast-fashion retailers bring new trends at low prices early on. The trick is, spotting the keepers.

Mostly, though, I will only try on a trend if it already appeals to me as fitting into my general style. (And i for one am thankful that some take on nautical is around every summer.)

I think there is a difference too between trying on trends to see if they look good on me (as with others here, No Never to crop tops) versus trying on new silhouettes to see what works, flatters, or could be gotten used to (like skinny or cropped pants), which is the fun kind of research.

I must tell a story on myself, though. Last winter DD and I were prowling the mall and I kept pointing out the floral printed jeans and saying how ridiculous they looked. Then I started noticing some BLUE printed floral jeans and they looked entirely different to my eye--like blue jeans that just happened to have a floral print. And then we wandered into the Gap and they had a pair, that fit me, marked down to $12, and I went home with them. All on the same day, and with much mockery from DD (who takes several years to warm up to any new trends).

Side note, I wore those same jeans yesterday to the same store with a different daughter, and the SA complimented me on how i had styled them!

I will try on any trend in the dressing room. I like to work in colors, even if it is only a nail polish. For me to adopt a trend it has to work into my style persona and my real life activities.

Hi Gigi.

I am an enthusiastic shopper and keep an open mind about most trends. That means I buy many trendy items but sometimes don't wear them which is very pitiful! :(

I give them away while the trend is still warm so at least they are enjoyed.

I know , I know. I have issues. :)

I can only think of 3 trends which I really don't like. I never cared for hoof-like platforms. I was not tempted to buy high/low hems although I admire it on many of you. Nautical anything leaves me cold. (Maybe more accurately called a look rather than a trend? It certainly doesn't seem to go away!)

I try all new trends. I need to know how to put them together for clients who vary in body type, age and lifestyle.

As for myself, I wear the ones that tickle my fancy and can be molded back into my style descriptor and persona. There are so, so, SO few trends that I don't like. 99% of the trends I like on someone. Yet, I am very particular about the trends I will wear myself. I think it has to do with working in the fashion industry for 22 years, shopping all the time, and eat-sleep-drinking style. I have to find ways of not getting bored when I SEE SO MUCH ALL THE TIME.

Thanks for the input, everyone!

It seems like most people are open to the new trends but try them only if they think they can wear them in a way consistent with their current style or if they like them right off the bat (or after their eye adjusts). But I do like the idea of trying on stuff just for the sake of trying it on, in the fitting room. That is a small investment of time and effort and won't cost a penny. That way I won't wonder if I'm not liking the trend simply because it's different. Instead, I'll know for sure that it doesn't look good on my body silhouette, etc. Or else maybe I'll see potential and then know what kinds of tweaks would need to be made in the style to get it to work with my body type. This sounds like a really fun experiment. Maybe next time I go shopping I'll just grab a bunch of stuff that I wouldn't ordinarily wear and see what happens!

Gryffin, you made me laugh about being in the mud baths! I'd save you a spot, but my point is to get *out* of the mud. :^) I will let you have my place when I have achieved Trendy Fashionista status.

Greyscale, thanks for your warning about waiting too long to adopt trends. I am in the same financial camp as you, not wanting to blow a lot of money on something I might not stick with. But if something is on the cheaper end, like tights, you make a good point that maybe spending the money is a good thing to make sure you get what you like before it disappears.

I love the sense of newness and possibility of trends, so I am often keen to dip my toe in the water. Also, I find that a lot of fashion retailers sell things that are fairly trendy, and knowing the trends just allows me to identify that and put it in context rather than just buying a piece because I like it. I sometimes think "No, never" with a trend, but then see it presented by Angie in a way that appeals to me, and decide to try it out. (I have JUST bought a cropped top to layer over a longer shirt, as per Angie's suggestion last week!) I actually find a lot of pleasure in getting something that I don't think will work for me to align with my style.

I just realized another thing - I often *want* to try a new trend but I am so reluctant to buy things at full retail price that I always delay buying it. Often that means I miss it entirely. For instance, I loved the lace tights trend a few years ago, and I meant to get some but I never wanted to spend the small bit of money. Now the trend feels played out *and* it's impossible to find the style of tights I want. It's even worse for designer items that are made in small quantity and sell out before going on sale. But in that case, I really can't afford to buy all the things I'd love to buy when they come out.

Gigi - can I pull up another stick in your batch of mud? I totally agree with Deborah - I only try trends that I like and are consistent with my style. That does not mean my eye does not change with time. But I usually will be intrigued with a trend and come to want to try it with time. I can't remember the last time i had an outright no response and adopted it later. That does not mean I may not love and admire it on others.. I certain do on many ocassions, it just means I know it's not right for me. When I've indulged in those trends, in the past, it's never worked out. So I'll be sharing a seat in the mud baths!! Please pass me a towel turban and cucumber slices for my eyes!!

I notice trends quickly but I'm very slow to adopt them unless they really speak to my pre-existing style. So, for instance, boyfriend jeans, I was excited right away. Peplums, I am finally starting to see a few that make me think "hmmm, maybe?" (in general I avoid anything feminine). Jumpsuits are "me" in some ways (the ones that are like flight suits, not 70s cocktail wear) but they seemed too out there for me for the first year or so that I saw them, so I only now really want one.

I'm trying to be a little more flexible about my definition of my own style so I can try new things, but on the other hand, why mess with success?

I'm right there with Mo in my feelings about trends. I love the idea of being 'trendy' but if I really don't care for a trend I won't try it regardless. In such cases I'm more than happy to just stay current. I'm still willing to give things a go though and I am aware that it can take a while to get on board with something new.

I find I have a strong sense of what I like. When trends fall under that umbrella, I hop aboard happily. If they don't I sidestep just as happily. I will say that staying current is important to me more than wearing an in trend. Echoing April here - I want to remain relevant and not look like I haven't noticed that I am indeed a generation older than a lot of my coworkers at the bar.
Bottom line, if I just don't like something, no amount if it being THE trend is going to matter. But if something is simply new and different, I give myself a little time to take it in.

I usually try most trends- I find it fun! However since figure flattery is a primary goal for me I always keep that in mind. So for example the cutout trend that often bares part of the waist is definitely not for me.

That's kinda hard for me to answer. I'm pretty trendy, given to loving all trends that come my way. However, I guess I can go my own way too. BF jeans did nothing for me and I didn't get on the bandwagon. I also don't think I've got a leather moto - that is, I think I gave them all away. And I never did get a monster clutch. $30 seemed like a lot for money for a hand-held muppet pocket - and forget the Lagerfield version. It was Karl right?

I'm slow to notice and slow to buy. Because I tend to want to be able to wear clothing for a couple of years, I stay away from things that I'm afraid will date in a year or two.

(Of course, this sometimes mean that I buy at the tail end of a trend and then wind up with the same problem. I'm still working on distinguishing between "trend" and "new silhouette.")

I make a point of trying new things more and more as I get older, including fashion trends, because (1) it's fun, and (2) I prefer to remain current. Yes, this often means stepping outside my comfort zone, and trying trends I don't initially love, and yes, sometimes I never learn to love a trend, but often I surprise myself.

Example: before the sporty trend hit, the last thing I would ever have thought I'd wear was anything sporty-looking. But while the sporty trend was newly in, I found myself liking sporty elements. I have gone off it again now, but it was fun while it lasted.

Trying new trends even when they don't appeal is interesting even when the experiment doesn't end up making one want to continue wearing the trend. It helps me at least to continue to evolve rather than getting stuck and thus dated.

This makes it sound as though I am a slave to trends but actually I'm not in the slightest. You might not even notice that I am wearing a trend, because of how I wear them, as part of my own style. I just think that, as Caro said, as I get older, being aware of current trends and pushing myself to try them helps me stay current, which I prefer.

I must admit, though, that my urge to experiment has sometimes been associated with buying things and then never wearing them. I still haven't worn the wedge trainers I bought at the beginning of the sporty trend, and now I doubt I will ever find a way to wear them! Must be more judicious to keep my wardrobe under control!

I only try trends I find attractive and that I think will work with my style. So for example midriff bearing crop tops might be trending but you will not see me wearing one lol ... oh and you would thank me for that.

The slouchy pants trend really appealed to me when I first saw it here on the Forum and I slowly dipped my toes in. I now have two pairs (summer and winter) that I think will be part of my wardrobe for some time. The trend never really hit here so in some ways wearing these pants sets me apart from the current trend (where I live anyway) which I like. They work well with my overall style and trending or not makes not difference to my choice to wear them.

I used to be utterly oblivious about them. Since joining YLF I'm more aware and more curious. And I've found that the older I get, the more interested I am in giving trends a whirl (which is sort of the reverse of many people, I know).

I'm not sure if that answers your question, though. I guess my answer is that I pretty much only try the ones that interest me up front -- but quite a lot do interest me.

Still, I'm selective. For instance -- I really love Angie's ensemble of the day. I mean, LOVE it. It makes my mouth pucker up in sour pleasure! But the thing is, I look like death in citron. So I won't be buying into the citron trend except maybe in the case of a small accessory of some kind.

Then there are the trends that I just don't care for or that might appeal in some way but are highly impractical for my climate/ lifestyle. I generally don't even bother trying those out in the store.

But new silhouettes, in particular -- those I like to try on and take a look at. You can't tell whether it will work on your body until you give it a go.

And there have been times when I've resisted a trend for a long time only to get on board with it. Booties with dresses and skirts, for instance. I still don't love them on my legs, but I like them better than my alternatives.

As I get older I find it more important to stay current with my clothing so I like to try new trends. In my experience you never know how it looks on your body until you try it.

I try them on to see how they look on my current body. Some I try on and love immediately, others take awhile for me to adjust, and then there are those that will never happen in my lifetime again. Crop tops and platform shoes come to mind.

I'm not one to follow all trends. If I see something while I'm out shopping, I'll make a point to try it on just for funsies. Usually, it doesn't feel like me.

The trends that I seem to gravitate towards are mostly accessory related. Seems like a lower risk to try those. : )

I seem to be one of those people who needs the adjustment time. Usually I like to see a trend worn (well of course!) by a few people before I jump in!

I always try out new trends at the store at least once - in the trial room. Many times I end up loving trends I thought I would never be caught in - like the skinny jeans which I avoided for a good 3-4 years. Since then I have learnt that one has to experiment.

But I never ever buy or wear a trend if at least a small part of me is happy or excited about it.

I usually don't follow trends very carefully but am definitely influenced by them, so sometimes I'll look up half a year after a trend has being going strong and think to myself "... wait, why do I suddenly find myself liking this thing?"

I think I'm about 8 years behind the trends. Fortunately some of them die out before they even register with me. The rest I tend to catch on the tail end. I'll never be cutting edge, but I am trying to speed up my eye a bit to find more things to try.

I sometimes do try things just to try them, and I try to stay open to being surprised, but mostly it takes me a long time to get my mind around very different new things.

I vacillate between worrying that I look completely out of it ("like somebody's irrelevant mother" to quote Jonathan Franzen) and worrying that I look like I haven't noticed that I'm no longer 25.

Sigh.

I appear to be Mrs. You're-going-to-have-to-drag-me-into-this-century.

I have thought about this, actually, and I think I have to see something for awhile before it stops looking strange to me. Just being on this forum has really helped me.
