The Vogue article is really helpful, thanks. Figures that after so many years of jeggings and such, fashion is swinging back toward 'real' denim. I like the idea of pairing with a button down or woven popover. I suspect that the cuffing and the shoes will be key to making them look intentional.

Funny, I'd just gotten used to buying longer tops and toppers, and now I'd need shorter ones...

Like Runs with Scissors, I wear 501s and similar styles quite a lot. I generally pair them with a casual but structured top (think linen or oxford buttondowns) -- and yes a semi-tuck works well here, so you don't have too much volume from the front but aren't screaming mom jeans from the back.

I also tend to opt for shorter jackets and toppers with this type of jean. Motos, trucker jackets, sporty-lux hoodies, etc. If you want to do a longer topper, like a loose cardigan, you'll need a very fitted baselayer for balance. Still doable, but I find a lot of longer drapy tops and sweaters don't "hang" as well over this type of jean.

Hope you post pics once you've styled these!

PS -- That Vogue article Roseandjoan posted is great! I am all on board for a return to real 100% cotton denim. It's a different mindset, but it lasts so much longer and breaks in with so much more character.

I think these are great, I am tucking loose tops into similar jeans at the moment. A bit like a less svelte version of this http://www.vogue.co.uk/fashion.....enim-trend

If you're concerned about the mom jean effect, maybe pair with a trendier shoe?
The only problem I have with mom jeans is the backside view, but that can be remedied with a long shirt that covers.

I like the look, and face similar challenges w.r.t. waist and thigh fit. I have some Levis 501s for women that achieve a similar look - maybe a bit more fitted through the thigh, and 501s are straight-leg, but I have big calves so they can look tapered if I cuff them. (And, I have to wear 'em belted.)

Not sure my input on styling is worth much ... I didn't know this fit was not evergreen. :) I usually end up pairing my 501s with a semi-tucked, semi-fitted t-shirt/knit top, and some sort of topper -- usually a cashmere or marino hoodies, but a relaxed blazer looks good too.

Sure, why not, especially if you find a way to style them that you like.

Last week I had some Old Navy Super Cash to redeem, so I headed to the store, as I've found ON is one of the places whose quality varies wildly. Nothing really grabbed me, but I tried on a pair of distressed boyfriend jeans that were almost right. They were the 'boyfriend skinny ankle' (a label which I think is a bit deceiving, but more on that later). The regular length wasn't long enough for me, so I went home and ordered the tall online, in the distressed and a dark wash, to use up my discount. They arrived today and I think I like them.

I've not had much success with boyfriend jeans so far, as if they're big enough for the hip and butt, they are way too loose at the waist but still snug through the thigh.

The ON pairs fit me quite well, though (they wouldn't work if you're super-narrow at the waist compared to hip, as I do have a tiny bit of gapping at the back, but not anything that can't be remedied by a belt or a small dart or two). They do remind me of 90s tapered jeans a bit, mainly because they're loose through the thigh. For so long all the skinnies were tight through the thigh, and even the bootcuts and flares were snug through the thigh and then get loose below the knee. These are semi-fitted at the waist/hip and then loose through the thigh and semi-fitted through the lower leg.

My only hesitation is that they do lean a little classic-mom-jeans-like, so I'm not sure how to style them. They definitely need a shorter, more fitted top to balance out the looseness - probably not something super-fitted, because that would look dated, but something with a strong shoulder-line and some visual structure.

Would love to hear what you think: absolutely no, or sure, why not?

Next up: the Spice Girls get back together. (Just kidding.)
