I think it might be cut for a smaller bust. So the twist is giving it an empire line effect. Personally, I have yet to find an empire line dress that is flattering. Would it be worth trying a larger size? It would probably be too big around your lower half, but that’s an easy alteration. Disappointing.

Janet, I always think you look fab in everything you post but I agree with you that this green dress is not the best style on you. Can we see a pic of you wearing the blue one? Or did you not end up buying it?

chiming in! Beautiful fresh yummy green! I would take it to your tailor before returning and see what they say.

The cobalt dress is fantastic too!! Shorten the sleeves. I bet it will be perfect once you do.

To your point about COS cutting for straight figures, I very much agree. I have experienced a similar issue with various retailers myself. I will say I have had a good experience this year finding summer dresses. I believe my experience is due to buying from brands/labels who generally have lines/cuts that suit curvier bodies. The last couple years I’ve needed to purchase my clothes from plus size retailers. While I haven’t loved needing larger sizes, what has opened my eyes dramatically is the fit is significantly better than other retailers. Eloquii and City Chic have accounted for actual body curves for their clothing lines. I’ve still had a few duds, but most of it really fits well.

Sadly, at smaller sizes, I have to either have a lot of tailoring done or just put up with less than nice fits. Curvy cuts exist in bottoms to some degree, which is an improvement. Still, the majority of retail clothing these days seems to be cut very straight to suit more people to better bolster sales. Totally get it. Yet a bummer for those of us who need tailoring and curvy cuts. Just my long winded way of saying I commiserate with you! hugs!!!

That’s an interesting observation, Val! But no, when I look at the other photos, the shoulders are definitely symmetrical:
https://www.cos.com/en_usd/wom.....72001.html

Interestingly enough, that shoulder width is an issue for me — my shoulders are uneven (scoliosis and torsion, I am very asymmetrical!), so sleeveless garments can be tricky if they have a wider shoulder. I often find that a narrower style helps disguise the issue and also helps deemphasize my bust. I think in the case of this dress, the gathered side-tied waist go back into the territory of bust-emphasizing.

Janet, I really love that color on you, and like the idea of styling it casually as a t-shirt dress with a little something extra.

I notice that the COS model is wearing it with the neckline skewed to one side, so that one armhole sits right at the shoulder bone while the other wings out past the shoulder. Could it be that the dress is intentionally asymmetrical at the shoulder? Or is it just weird photoshoot styling? Wondering because you said you were thinking of having the shoulders altered.

Also, a minor rant. Dresses with tiers, ruffles, puff sleeves, and ditsy, pastel prints are STILL dominating the retail landscape. Back cutouts, spaghetti straps or weird bodices that cannot be worn with a real bra. So many of the dresses seen either matronly or slinky with not much in between.

It’s really not a big deal if I don’t find another dress for this summer. Last year I ended up leaning more into wide pants or floaty skirts with tees or sleeveless tops. I like the idea of one-piece dressing, but the reality is that it’s harder than it seems it should be.

Thanks for the feedback and ideas.

Sometimes I really wish items were modeled by women who had at least a little curve on them. It’s so hard to envision how something will translate from a narrow person with zero hips or thighs. At least nine times out of ten, it’s a disappointment.

If I'm going to add a dress to my wardrobe at this point, it needs to be very easy and work with minimal styling. It would be for summer so would need to stand on its own without a topper, and with sandals and a simple bag. Maybe a necklace, but I’m not super into my statement necklaces these days.

Thanks for the feedback!

I will probably give it a little steam and try it again. The fabric is nice but it’s a little on the stiff side for a jersey dress. And honestly I think COS’s styles are much more easily worn on women who have straight figures, which I do not, no matter what my weight or size.

Funny enough, I tried on a DKNY t-shirt dress in the Rack in a really pretty royal blue — it’s midi length, with slits in the side, and an actual tie at the side waist, so it’s adjustable. The drawback was the awful-for-me nearly elbow-length short sleeves (that style makes me look sooooo dumpy). I tried folding the sleeves back to see how it might look with them removed, and it could work. It’s only $30 so an inexpensive gamble. The color, and the style other than the sleeves may be better on me.

Dresses are soooo hard to fit, because if you are a slightly different size on top vs bottom then the whole thing can be or seem off….and I’m wondering if that what’s making you feel not as fab when you look at the pictures. I find Dress with waist details and or placement to be particularly hard to fit, but a good tailor can also make a dress fit perfectly

I can also see what is bugging you. I have never noticed this before so I think it is the cut of the dress. As JenniNz says you don't have a very big mid section. If you are questioning I think pass.

It’s hard isn’t it Janet? Maybe why I don’t save product photos much?
The models are almost inevitably younger, slimmer and taller than me.
I do still think this looks good on you. It has more horizontal lines than it would when you press it. Your “midsection” is not very big!

I don’t know why it is so hard to find interesting, casual, solid color dresses.
I like that I can envision this one with casual sandals or sneakers, or dressed up if needed. Sometimes prints, as much as I like them, can feel so specific and I can tire of them or they start to feel dated.

Last year I tried a dress from COS in a really pretty green, as I am always on a low-key search for cool, comfortable, casual, easy summer dresses. I’d love a solid color in my palette but not black. Solid color dresses are hard to find in styles that appeal!

The one I tried last year was ruched all through the sides of the bodice and had too much fabric in the top — a too-long top is a common problem I have with dresses. Size down and they’re too tight in the hip. This cut is simpler but does have a twist detail at the waist. It may also be too long on me, but perhaps if it is, this style may be alterable. At any rate, I ordered it to try!

Update: it came today! The fit is much better than last year’s green dress. It could use a little alteration — the shoulder is cut just a little too wide for me (a typical issue), and I have the shoulder folded in a little bit here in the photos. Please ignore the sneakers — not what I’d wear with it — and the wrinkles, since this was literally straight out of the package. The green is not quite the same as last year — a bit more Kelly green, which I think is still ok on me.

I liked it in the mirror, but looking at the photos, I’m not so sure. Something about the waist detail seems to be making me look like I have more of a midsection than I actually do. Or maybe it’s the horizontal lines emphasizing width right where I don’t need it, and with no pattern to distract the eye, all the attention goes to the lines. Hm. I’m not so sure about this one.
