we have just had our first frost and seen a young redwing eating berries when we went to look at the seasonal leave colour today.Bringing the pumpkins in from the allotment and seeing them drying on the window sill always makes me feel seasonal as does the clocks going back this weekend which means it’s dark by 5 O clock now.

How fun to have a repeat visitor! Owls are so cool. We don’t get them often, but we do visit them at the nature rehab center from time to time. There is a resident female bald eagle who lives at the center; my older son is obsessed with her.

Fall is definitely in the air here and the trees in our hood seem to have turned overnight!

Big disconnect between weather and season here. A few weeks ago it was in the low/mid 40’s at night, this week the highs are low to mid 80’s. Would have put on warmer bedding but I knew the weather was going to warm up.

Apple tree is done. Some leaves from other trees started falling in August, others are still on the trees. The warmest part of the day doesn’t last that long so even on warm days the house doesn’t hold in the heat.

My sure signs of seasonal change are also birds. The juncos leave in spring and return after the very cool weather comes in fall and the mountains have new snow.

The owl you mention reminds me of an owl that haunted me and my friends during a vacation in Tuscany. It started hooting precisely at 9.30 pm and stopped precisely at 5.00 am. Every-3-seconds ( I timed it). At first we could not sleep and were exhasperated but then got used to it and now we laugh every time we remember that holiday. The owner of the farmhouse where we were staying told us what it is. I do not know the name in English - the scientific name is otus scops. It is pretty !

Signs of Fall for me are air that smells humidity, house that smells humidity and back that starts to ache - I live in a very humid area of Northern Italy and I hate Fall with passion. :)

The cat, considering noon temperatures is a clever way to judge seasons. I notice the temps at noon as well because I usually go for a midday walk around my office building to get fresh air.

Sal, I have never seen a silver eye! Very nice colors! We have both cherry and magnolia trees on our lot. Strangely, our magnolia flowers twice a year, once in Spring, and again in the fall just before it snows! It’s in full bloom right now. The landscaper said that very few do and supposedly it means they are very healthy, but I wonder if it is something about the variety?

The other sign of fall around here are apples! This is an apple farming area, and it’s apple picking season. I have some trees in my yard and I couldn’t get to one of them before they all fell off and went to the local deer. My Granny Smith crop however was delicious! I had more than I could slice and freeze, make into sauce, or give away!

Love owls and Sal's little bird too It's definitely full on fall here now- leaves about 1/2 changed, the corn stalks have been plowed, and pumpkins in the fields. It's a beautiful time of year here

For me here in Spring the first signs are the cherry blossom and the magnolias flowering. Then bright green growth on the deciduous trees.

We have a kowhai tree outside our bedroom and the silvereye birds arrive to feed off it in abundance.

Spring is also our windiest season and so often the blossoms can be more fleeting than I would like!!

I also like owls and we sometimes get a Morepork owl visiting - I must track and see if it is seasonal.

CJH, I am around the corner from a very rural farm community, and noticed that most have finally started to harvest the grain corn that they left on the stalk to dry. They usually do this as late as possible with an eye to our early winters.

JAileen, the owl in my yard is a Great Horned Owl; there are also Barred owls in the area. Your tree is gorgeous! The owl walk sounds like fun. I wonder if they have anything like that around here.....

Style Fan, instead of bears, we have Coyotes. I hear their strange and often very loud yips and excited howls at night when they are successful hunting. Fortunately, we haven’t had any problems with them getting into our garbage bins or attacking children or pets, but across town, an adult was attacked by one in daylight. I assume it had rabies.

Rachy, we lived in CA for a year and could definitely detect distinct seasonal changes. Smog and no smog! (We lived near the base of Mount Baldy at the edge of Los Angeles County and San Bernardino County).

Glory, I wonder if the geese you get are those that left us and then return in the Spring?!

lisa p, Mama geese are also very mean! I have had numerous encounters with them when running along the local rail trail, and have learned to spread my arms like wings, and flap at them so they think I’m the biggest goose of all! :-)

Suz, maybe the owls have kept the crows away! We have never had a problem with crows. I have a copper eagle weathervane on my gazebo, but I think the wildlife have figured out it’s fake!

Loved to read about the owls in your backyard.

While I enjoy looking at, and listening to, changes in nature, my definite signs for a new season always have to do with the noon temperatures seen in weather forecasts for a 10 days period. To me, fall is when noon temperatures will generally be lower than 15°C. Likewise, winter = noon temperatures generally lower than 5°C (most days MUCH lower). Spring = noon temperatures generally 5°C or higher. Summer = noon temperatures generally 15°C or higher (some days pretty much higher).

I love owls. We have Barred Owls who have a 'Who Cooks For You' call in the woods around our house. I find them reassuring. Towards the end of the summer, the bears come around, probably looking for berries. There is a ravine behind our house and I think that is where the bears live. The younger bears are very cute but I keep my distance. Mother bears are very protective.

Oh it’s interesting. People often say we don’t have seasons here, because it doesn’t snow. But we do have seasons. Trees do turn and leaves start to pile up. The light is shorter; the cold sharper (and the furnace starts coming on). The geese come in. The veg garden comes to its end.

I love owls, but they aren't common here - at least in my part of the city. Fall here is marked by the return of the geese to the big "launching pad" that is a big nature reserve and lake nearby . They fly in from all around to stay the night on the lake, ,and will eventually leave soon for points south. Geese are beautiful to watch in flight, and are cute when herding their little ones around, but man are they loud . And messy.

Now we see eagles...they are more prevalent in our neighbourhood in fall/winter.

We live in corn country, so the drying down of the crops to pale gold from dark bright green, the crispy smell, and the wind rustling the plants are very much a part of our season change.

Every year, for the past 10 years, an owl has spent the fall and winter in a tree in my backyard. He/She starts to hoot like clockwork, every evening before sunset and stops again just after the sun rises. Once the owl arrives, my trees have started to turn colors, the mornings are cool and brisk, and I feel Fall has truly arrived.

This year, there seem to be two owls because I can hear my friend, and a neighbor who answers back! :-)

I sometimes see the owl on the tree in the evening, but not too often, his hiding place is well hidden, and requires binoculars and patience.

I find the owls hoots strangely comforting and look forward to hearing them every year. :-)

Do you have signs you watch for that let you know it’s a new season other than the calendar date?
