I think it can be.

Marketing is extremely powerful, and companies pay a lot of money to understand how our brains work to create a want for their products.

It is quite the trick to figure out what you truly want and only purchase that.

It isn't really true for me. If I want it and buy it I typically enjoy it, at least for some time.

Yes, it used to be much more true for me, especially when I was shopping at the swap meet a lot more. Actually, that phenomenon was more, "See it, buy it, forget about it." The want part was more reserved for stuff I thought I couldn't afford. I still like to get basics from the swap meet, but I am learning to pay more for things I really love, so that they hold my attention longer.

I saw this and loved it. I think it can be true if you're not careful and mindful about your purchases.

At the risk of sounding overly cynical, it's called MARKETING. And I get disgusted at knowing that I'm being led by advertising to desire these things but still get caught up in the web of illusion and hype.

Less & less so for me I'm pleased to say. What about the companion one:
YOU WANT IT
YOU BUY IT
YOU LOVE IT (& it loves you back).

I agree with Mo- if it is non-impulse, within budget and fills a closet hole- it can be more like:
PLAN IT/ PURCHASE IT/ ENJOY IT!

Very often I find that is the case. It's almost like the want is more exciting. I am really moving away from this though (hopefully). It's important to be happy with what you have, not just pine for the next item. I try to keep off the online shopping for this reason.

Depends . . . I do think that delayed gratification is not a bad thing. Used to be you saved up and waited to buy stuff. Now we buy it, and then work at paying it off.
