Lisa so sorry about your order. I have been tempted many times by items at Nordstroms but just wont order as it's such a hassle and costly exercise should I have to return. We don't seem to incur duties etc but the shipping it self can be a little over the top.

Lisa, measure your shoes. I got an 8 1/2 because I need inserts for my inured foot. they measure 10 7/8 inches by 3 1/2 inches at the widest point. This is the right shoe measured on the sole.

Absolutely understood Angie. Never considered this as anything other than a bad fit. Who ever knows? Just reporting it as I see it And I'm totally teasing about the J Crew pant fit. That was written before you replied . Pants are so individual, and I have no fears of them other than my own unpredictable size being a factor.

There is always risk involved with online purchases. I share what i can about an item - (after seeing it and fitting in on a body) - to help others because it's for the most part a helpful process. But it's not flop proof. More of a solid starting point.

Yes, it's true...we all have different needs and expectations. I will say that a couple of Angie pick items didn't work for me so well, either. Some Nordies items -- those failed because I ignored body type (and related) advice and ordered anyway. Then there was the itchy sweater, and the too easily stretched out sweater. But they were from the GAP, so at least I didn't have to deal with duties!

I think when we are on here it is so easy to get caught up in the excitement. Our US friends can order and return so easily -- there are almost no drawbacks to it. But for us, the drawbacks are pretty steep and that can rob the whole experience of the fun.

Suz - thanks for taking the time and care to write a comprehensive on-line ordering manual :). Fortunately, I'm not a complete on-line neophyte I've ordered from J Crew on and off over the years, as well as from Zara. I've been really lucky in getting exactly what I imagined and exactly what I ordered in terms of fit and quality from both. This Nordstrom debacle was a first. And, not that it has anything to do with Angie, but these were both from a list of her picks. I'm not at all trying to start an argument, but it goes to show that even with endorsement, we can all have very different ideas and expectations. Ah, when all is said and done, it's an experience, and one I needed to calm my self down and get the itch scratched. The bloom is off the rose Checking for reviews is one thing I didn't do, and your reminder to do so is valuable. I will actually be writing a review for both pieces tomorrow. I tried on the sweater, and it's fine.

Argh, Lisa, I am sorry. This is very frustrating.

If it is any comfort to you -- and it probably won't be -- my entire first year of ordering online (from Nordstrom's or anywhere else, for that matter) was pretty much a dud. Keep in mind that I was fashion ignorant in the extreme and really didn't have a clue about my body type or the kinds of patterns/ colours that tend to work for me, but even if I had been more savvy, I think it would have been difficult. I did get one belt from Nordstrom's that worked out brilliantly (and they didn't charge duty!!) and a couple of other successful items, including the Sam Edelman Pettys in python (courtesy a kind forum mate who mailed them to me.) But I sent back SO MUCH.

To Nordstrom's alone....let's see....several bags, two tops, a couple of skirts, some shoes....

Worst was the pair of tall boots that were a terrible fit for me (Borns) and that never made it to their return destination!! Thank goodness I had tracking and Nordstrom's saw that it was not my fault and refunded my money when I called about that.

In one case, I had a friend who was going to the US mail the parcel for me from there, so that at least I did not have to pay return postage. (I did get my duties returned -- but I bought everything on a Nordstrom's card, so this made it all easier.)

I have since become much more careful. Here are my tricks of the trade:

1. If planning to order, ask ask ask about the specific item here on the forum. Has anyone seen it, tried it on, touched it? What is this person's body type/ style? Similar to mine or not? What can they tell me? Read all reviews. Don't buy something that is too new to have been reviewed at all. Too risky. I agree that colours sometimes turn out quite different than on the monitor. Often they appear lighter and/or brighter than IRL.

It really, really helps to know the brand. If I know how the label tends to fit overall (whether we're talking clothing or shoes) that is a big help. So even if no one has seen that item, it can be useful to ask that more general question.

2. Order Angie picks. These generally work out really, really well for me, assuming I need/ want that type of item and I read and pay attention to all the fine print in her roundups. If she says it will work best on a busty apple, and I order it....well...let's just say, I have done this occasionally, and those are the mistakes that I live to rue. If she says it will work someone with my body type modifiers, I perk up.

3. Order to my US address and go pick it up. It takes a couple of hours of my time, but this saves duties, taxes, etc. Typically I try it on at the checkpoint and decide then and there whether I want to keep. If I want to return it, returns are free in the US. If I'm not sure, I bring it home to decide.

Yes, I declare at the border. Usually. Or partially. I do admit to tossing a few items in the checkpoint trash and wearing a new bra and some plaid jeans once. ;)

But even if I pay duty there, and then decide to return the item later, I can get the duties back. It's a bit of a hassle, but there is a form for it. If worst comes to worse, and I can't be bothered with that hassle, I will lose around $15 (or whatever...it depends on the item's cost). That's better than the postage for return from Canada.

4. Group orders in seasonal batches. I tend to order twice or three times per year. Once or possibly twice for NAS. Once in mid-winter (sales etc. and often Mr. Suz wants things around this time, so we go down together.) Rarely, I will also order something in the spring.

5. Before ordering, check to see if the same item is available in Canada for a comparable price. Sometimes I get lucky. The Bay's website is a nightmare but you can turn up goodies there now and again with the search function. Especially if you wait for a few weeks after something first appears at Nordies.

6. Decide to do without the item. Put it in my Nordie's shopping basket and just...wait. Often the urge passes or I find something just as good here. If I don't, and I still want it two weeks later, well, there's information.

I am hopeful that their Customer Service is as great as usual and they help you out.

Lisa, all the duties and taxes will be refunded, no problem. The high cost is because it has to be done through their designated courier. It's all very quick and easy, just costly. I had assumed I could send stuff back Canada Post, which would have been 15-20, and was prepared to do that. But the $46? EEK!

And I don't think Carters suggestion would work to get the duties back. But it might...

Aw that's no good! Glad at least the skirt is nice. I hear you on the duties/taxes. That's why I tend to ship Nordie's stuff to my US box. I declare but it's a rarity for them to ask me to come in to pay duty. Depends on the day and the agent (and I don't usually do big orders at once). Honestly, every time I have shipped directly to my house from a US retailer, I end up keeping the goods even if less than "10's" just because of the pain and $ to ship back to the states.

Deb - that is so odd, as these are so big that I even checked the box twice to see if they hadn't perhaps shipped the wrong size. You are right about the stff leather though - it is fine, and I'm viewing the shoes through very annoyed eyes and seeing every perceived flaw. I've edited my comments above .accordingly

Sorry to hear that the sneaks did not work out for you. They look so good in the pic! The duties and return charges are killer and the sole reason that I didn't order any footwear from Nordies until I discovered the border shipping point. I hope you are able to get your money back.

I received my shoes today and love them. I found them true to size, and 8. But, I do have a high arch which may take up some of the width. The left heel is also a little loose but my feet swell when the weather gets warm so I am not worried. I like the stiffer leather because I find with leather that is too soft, the shoe looses shape fast. Sorry your purchases did not work for you.

I am going to use my magic powers of communication and persuasion to see if the shipping charges can be modified. It's one thing if you've simply changed your mind, but in both cases, the pieces were not as they should be. The sizing on the shoes was off by at least a full size, and the colour of the sweater is nothing like on the website. I write good letters (if you ever want free nights in a hotel - I'm your woman)

Yikes! That would cure me too. Is it cheaper/possible to send the returns to a US fabber who can return in person? I send things to my daughter all the time. Whatever doesn't work, she takes to her local Nordies, gives them my email address. They look up the sale and credit my credit card.

Yikes, the duties are ridiculous! I'm bummed for you that those things didn't work out. I thought the shoes looked pretty cute myself, but I have a slightly narrow/low-volume foot, and now you've got me thinking those wouldn't work for me either. The color of that sweater is really pretty in the stock photo -- I hate it when colors are different IRL!

$46 to ship it back?? Holy mother of pearl. I could drive it back to their warehouse for about that price. Oh man I am just sick. I wonder how we get our duties and import taxes refunded? Anyone know anything about that?

Lisa you're not going to like this, but return shipping is $46. No choice.

Sorry you had bad luck ;(. I've been pretty lucky with my Nordies orders - the only time I had to return was when I planned to - ordered two different sizes of a few things. But the return shipping was a nasty surprise.
