Yeah, those aren’t trouser jeans, they’re wide leg jeans with a high waist. Talbots still sells a trouser jean occasionally, as well as a slim cropped pant in a denim-like fabric.

IIRC, trouser jeans fit a fairly narrow window of occasions back in the day, and things have continued to ‘casualize’, so that an event I might have worn trouser jeans to now I’d wear either dark wash jeans, or slim non denim, non lounge pants.

@cjh I agree those are more jeans than trousers! I wonder if this is like the rebranding of 'sweatpants' to 'joggers' that we're starting to see a lot of these days (retailers trying to jump on the revived athleisure bandwagon whilst also marketing to those WFH during the pandemic - making what are essentially loungewear bottoms sound more appropriate to be worn whilst working from home too)? If that's the case, I wonder what the incentive is to not just use the terms bootcut/ flared jeans?

@angie I can see the link to your 2007 post now - those look a lot like the 'denim pants' I still have in my closet. I guess it shows that they're 10+ years old now based on their mid-low rise LOL

Blast from the past post blew my mind! I would wear some of those low rises and they would be mid-rise on me.

I didn't know so many were labeled trouser jeans either. I always thought they were more like chinos, only made in denim like jeans.

cjh, I hope they bring out REAL trouser jeans soon :)

Nuancedream, YES! 7 to 8 inch rises back then. Good grief. My clients struggled with that enormously - petites too. I didn't mind them too much because I'm short in the rise, but 9 to 10 inches rises are better!

I have noticed that as well. I am also irked by the miss-description of fabric weaves and treatments, ombré, dip-dye and tie-dye are not the same, and neither are crochet and lace! Don’t even get me started on sweater patterns!

I doubt if any of the trouser jeans in that 2007 YLF post had a rise over 7.5 or 8 inches. I was so happy when mid rises came along.

cjh, you are right. These aren't trouser jeans to me. They are simply very casual flared jeans.

Look at my 2007 post on trouser jeans:

https://youlookfab.com/2007/02.....user-jean/

Look at the VERY LOW RISES! (14 years ago).

Well....honestly, i think the pair you linked to are neither trousers nor jeans LOL...
not trousers because i think of them as dressier, and not jeans because of the fabric content...but then I’m at that cranky part of aging, “that’s not how it was back in my day”...LOL..
but I don’t know what else to call these, and i think to many trouser jeans would describe these and what that “old fashion” cotton rich denim that’s styled like.trouser.

I wasn't aware of this until Angie's blogpost either. I grew up calling every style just "denim pants", in my native tounge. That would be "dongeri".

All of a sudden I’ve seen “trouser jeans” often given as the name for what I would term jeans.

https://www.nordstrom.com/s/si.....309?origin

I always understood trouser jeans to be styled like dressy slacks, with features like slanted pockets, front or back welt pockets, no double seams or top stitching, regular fly zipper, or using back or side zippers, more tailored waistband or faced waistline, invisibly hemmed. But the fabrication is jeans - denim, or even chambray.

Now I see trouser jeans that to me are just jeans, with rivets and metal buttons, contrasting top stitching, flat-felled seams, turned and stitched hems, or even frayed hems, five-pocket styling, back patch pockets, cargo pockets, and even logo patches or stitching on the back. Why has “trouser jeans” become a name for these? What are the formerly named trouser jeans now called?
