Tanya -- the last time we were in Montreal was Feb 2020, right before the pandemic, and definitely felt more bustling and more dressy.

Runcarla and Style Fan -- I would love to go to Ottawa at some point! Good restaurant recs. We were mostly limited to takeout and home cooking since we had our 7yo with us (no vax means no crowded indoor spaces). We were close to Marché Jean-Talon so cooking for ourselves was really the most fun anyway! :)

Shevia -- thanks!

Rachylou -- I think covid is the biggest factor, yes. My SIL and her friends (most of them are employed by the city, the province, or the universities) are still largely WFH and getting together on patios or in parks rather than going to pubs/shows/etc. The weather probably plays a role too. It's that typical northeast fall weather: beautiful and sunny one minute, raining sideways the next...

Approprio -- I keep waiting for that to happen here! Where I live, in New Hampshire, college kids are back on campus and having class in-person, but it's a sea of sweats and athletic shoes; I see no push yet to dress up. Nice to hear from you again. :)

Kkards -- That definitely tracks with what I'm seeing (and doing!).

Robin F -- It is a fun city! Very worth a visit. And getting across the border isn't too bad. The trickiest part was scheduling our PCR tests so that we'd have results when we crossed.

Joy -- You know, skirts and scarves do read as "dressed up" these days. I think there really has been a shift...

Stagiaire Fash -- Thanks! Pretty easy trip to pack for, since we drove *and* the forecast was more or less the same as the weather we've been having at home. I am happy at how streamlined my colours are these days. Everything goes with everything, to a certain degree, and the little bits of lighter blue add just enough contrast for me.

My travels have all been to really casual places so I’ve not noticed a change in others, but i can report on my self. I’ve been back at the office 3 days a week for a couple of weeks now, and i have noticed that i am more casual them i was before. Joggers anyone?

Interesting. I’ve just come back from a fortnight in Crete, where I’m happy to report the Greek kids are razor sharp, particularly on Saturdays. I notice the same here in Amsterdam - young people seem more inclined to dress up a bit after months under lockdown. Who can blame them? I feel the same myself.

Thank you for your report on your Montreal trip. It is good to hear that you are seeing people in real clothes. I wore a skirt today and it got lots of attention on a short neighborhood walk. People thought I was so dressed up but I was pretty casual in striped sneakers. Maybe I should have left off the scarf. But it pulled everything together besides people should be used to see me wearing scarves by now. I enjoyed your report.

Thanks for the trip report, LaPed. I’d say the same of Ottawa last week, though folks did seem to dress up for dinner out! Monday night was a special menu at a chef owned restaurant called ‘Absinthe’ and it was definitely ‘date night’. Dark clothes and leather. Tuesday night we ate at ‘The Green Door’ an organic vegetarian place that has been in business 30+ years. It’s fairly rustic, and brightly lit - but folks were dressed up - women in loose dresses and men in button downs and sweaters - think Sunday-brunch-after-church-style. Wednesday was at a gastro pub and fashion was more like you describe - jeans, hoodies, bombers. Still lots of leggings, and black, on the street.

Thank you for the great trip report, and your capsule looks excellent. What you describe about casualization is what I have heard and noticed is happening everywhere. The one and only time I was lucky to visit Montreal was in August 2019 and there was a mix, but there were lots of people dressed up.

DS’s school had fall break last week, so we spent five days in Montreal at my SIL’s, and then a few days in the Eastern Townships on the way home. This was our first time in a metro area and also our first time across the border in almost two years. The weather was mostly cooperative, at times unseasonably warm and sunny, at times brisk, plus some overcast and rainy days. We did a lot of urban walking in Montreal, plus a bunch of hiking in Bromont and Sutton.

What struck me most was how increasingly casual the city has become and how quiet the streets are, even weekends/evenings. We were staying in Villeray, with trips into Little Italy, Mile End, Outremont/Mont Royal, and HoMa.

Street style was heavy on jeans and sneakers, with a smattering of boots (mostly chelsea or combat-lite) and still some sandals (!). Sneakers ran the gamut from retro-classic to contemporary, and younger folks in particular seem to have embraced both the dad sneaker look and platform versions of old favorites (Converse, Vans). Jeans were either slim/skinny or 90s-style relaxed and baggy with a high rise. Lots of gear, too: joggers and leggings were as prevalent as jeans. In terms of toppers, shackets and bombers were the two trends that seem to have gained the most steam. Shackets tended to be fuzzy, light neutral (either plaid or solid), and ranged from low-hip to above-the-knee. I saw bomber jackets in all sorts of materials, from taffeta to tweed to leather, and ranging from exaggeratedly cropped to exaggeratedly long, and black was definitely the predominant colour.

But in all honesty those wearing fashion jackets stood out, as simple hoodies, along with practical shells and puffers from Arcteryx, MEC, Columbia, etc were definitely the norm. The nature of pandemic life (WFH, socializing outdoors) seems to be causing urban and rural style to converge, and there seems to be little motivation/occasion to dress up…

Remarkably, pretty much my whole packing list for the trip, including gear and lounge, is in Finds. :)
