My sympathies for your pain and the frustration that comes with trying to find a good management plan. My mom has TN and although she has the pain managed now it took an extended period of experimentation with pain medication (types, dosages) and lifestyle changes to get where she is today. She also has a friend who couldn't manage with mess so had the surgical procedure with positive results. I mentioned you to my mom and will pm you her email address in case you want to ask her anything directly. Good luck!

Please let me know how the Gabapentin works for you. That's what I take, and it works fairly well--better than any of the other meds they prescribed me before. I still have the shooting pains in various parts of my feet, though.

Danusia, neurologists are the specialists. Mine is caused by a blood vessel pressing against a nerve. Here is more information.

My brother has familial tremors, and underwent an operation in which they had to drill into his skull. He's much better now; shaking is under control.

I had TMJ when I was in my 20s and had to take muscle relaxants. Braces corrected the problem, thank goodness. They removed 8 teeth before putting the braces on; 3 wisdom teeth after the braces were removed. I never had a 4th wisdom tooth.

Deb, from all my research I have found that there are no medical professionals that are specialists in this area. I read a lot about botox for treating this, but the long term effects of repeated botox treatments are scary (muscle atrophy).

I am getting a massage this week by a person who is certified in trigger point massages. Believe it or not the pain can also be caused by tightness/knots in the neck and upper back that puts pressure on the trigemenal nerves. I have noticed that I am tighter on my right side than left and hoping that the massages will help. Right now the pain is not bad, but I would like to get rid of the source if it is the case.

I made an appointment with my neurologist. I originally was diagnosed with the nerve issue because of facial spasms. That is when I found out the pain was not migraine like I thought. I have been able to deal with the pain only this bout is the worst I have ever had. The solution for the spasms is to drill a hole in my skull behind the ear and insert something between the nerve and the blood vessel pressing on the nerve. I am not too keen on that solution.

I had a friend who suffered from that. She took an anticonvulsant for it, which worked pretty well. Sometimes she had to get the dosage adjusted for it to work better. It is a very painful condition, and I'm sorry to hear you're dealing with it. Do you have a good neurologist to monitor it?

Yes I have this and have had for about 10 years. Originally I thought it was migraine although my migraines have always been left sided. My neuralgia is right sided. Migraine medication did nothing for the pain. It took years to run through all of the tests. I even had a tooth extracted to no avail. It looks like it was caused by a dental implant where the titanium post touched a nerve. I tried lyrica for about 6 months but it did not help me and from what I understand it is the go to drug. I do use botox for migraine management (every 3 months) and this has actually helped reduce the frequency of the really painful bouts of the ear pain. I have found nothing that actually helps with the pain management other than that.

Funny you should ask, but I have been dealing with it for just over a month. Started right after a dental crown prep on the right side. I think it was from the novacaine shot I received. Pain was the worst right near my ear. Advil did not help. Cold and heat did not help. Went to the doctor since the dentist could only confirm that my bite was fine and that my jaw was in alignment. Doctor prescribed 20 mg prednisone once a day for 10 days. That immensely calmed it down, but the medication kept me up a lot at night. Been off medication fir just over one week and just feel the tiniest amount of discomfort at times, especially if I chew something hard so I try not to eat any hard bread/rolls etc.

I also think a large part if it was due to clenching my jaw.(going through a difficult time right after my dad passed away) and I have caught myself doing it and now doing relaxation moves which have also helped me.

Is there a determinate source of your neuralgia? My friend's MIL suffers from neuropathic facial pain from a surgery. Very difficult. Honestly, I believe she retreats to her bed sometimes.
