I couldn't agree more with Refugee - good on you for putting them back on the rack if they weren't perfect, rather than settling for second best! :-)

Many a day I've gone shopping and come home with nothing lately. I don't think of it as failure. Rather, I see it as progress as I work towards what I envisage my look being and I become more adept at buying clothes that flatter and suit my lifestyle. I'm not prepared to spend even $5 of my hard earned money on the clothing equivalent of rubbish.

Another little trick I've just started to learn is that when I'm in the changing room trying on clothes, I take a photo of myself in the mirror using my mobile phone. For some reason I find that I can look at myself a little more objectively on film and see whether things like proportions etc, are all good, or whether it is a Big Fat No. I just thought I'd share in case it is a useful tip for the future.

I hope you feel a little better and if you are looking for that perfect woven blouse, that you find it soon! We are thinking of venturing to a large retail outlet centre tomorrow ourselves - wish me luck!

I don't think this sounds like a fail at all. You tried something different (always a good thing in my book) you used your discerning eye and decided it didn't work for you. If you would have walked out of the store with these items, knowing you would never wear them, that would be a fail.

Well, I wouldn't use the work "fail" in this case; the style doesn't go with your life, and it sounds like the fit isn't great for you. If anything, it's the garment that failed.

I was thought I'd be pushing my own fashion envelope. BTW the line runs very small. I barely fit into the large button down.

Sounds a bit too girly for you, though. Did you WANT them to work? Or did you try them on knowing it was a stretch?

I agree - this doesn't sound like a failure to me, just sounds like you tried on something that didn't really feel like you.

(The tops sound totally cute - I'd make a beeline for Myer if the store was in the US!)

And this is why we try on. And know our wardrobes! Kudos to you both for trying something new and knowing it won't work with your lifestyle.

I totally agree with Kimlee. Congrats on just trying something new. I have mostly suits and dress shirts becauase I have to go to court alot BUT I often pair my work shirts with black, pants, cords, just anything that is a more relaxed fabric and less tailored cut.

You can also, depending, on the lenght of the chirt, wear it as a dress.

And you can wear it as a layering piece, with a less dressy shirt.

Sateen can be tricky--What color was it? If it is a neutral then just pair it with jeans like Kimlee said and maybe a cotton jacket.

Here is an example of J-Crew.--they are great insipration for pairings of this kind.

http://www.jcrew.com/browse/mu.....3445816272

Honestly that is most of my look and I often get compliments and J-CREW has built thier empire on this type of look.--so go out there and buy those shirts and rock them

Annagybe - I commend you for trying something outside of your comfort zone. I would like to say that I often wear my tops from my office job, with dark jeans, boots, and a fun cardi/jacket when going out with friends or a date with my husband. Just because something is designed for one environment (work) does not mean that it can not work in another way.

I went shopping with my cousin today and hit some of the Boxing Day sales. We were in Myer (closest American equivalent would be Macy's) and I saw two lovely Ben Sherman shirts. One was a semi-sheer polka dot blouse with a ruffle half way down the front. The other was a cotton sateen button down. The base was black with swallows all over it in various shades of teal and turquoise.
If I had an office job they'd look great, but I just felt like a sham in them.
