I totally sympathize. Dresses are a difficult fit for me, so I hope DD elopes! I think we share some of the same fit challenges, except that I am 5' 1" so I can sometimes wear a regular size in order to find a decent (vs. indecent) length. In fact, this evening UPS delivered a regular size Vince Camuto dress that seems to work for me at 37" so it still hits a couple inches above my knees. I can't fathom having to find a dress that fits below mid-thigh in addition to the color/style/fit constraints.

Janet, I hear you on the sizing, but don't get discouraged! You are going to find the perfect dress. I think more dresses are starting to filter into the stores now too, so there may be some styles you haven't seen yet. I do think you should try Angie's suggestion though, the Tadashi Shoji dresses I've tried have been surprisingly friendly to my hips and thighs. In my dress shopping experience, after trying on piles of dresses you will know the one the minute you put it on. Breath and keep an open mind.

Good Luck with your search.
I went to 3 weddings last year and wore the same dress to all. It was a comfy shift Vince Camuto dress for 49.99 from TJ Maxx! I had previously looked and looked in all the usual places and found nothing until I spotted this. It is a nice orange and completely plain apart from an exposed gold zipper on the back. The dress looks good with all different accessories and shoes. I have 2 more weddings in April, one in PA and one FL. I intend to have a quick look for something but if I don't find anything I will be wearing the Vince dress again lol.
Dont settle as you will be unhappy on the day and certainly miserable when you look at the pictures.

The right dress can be elusive but when you find it you will know and breath a HUGE sigh of relief! I also struggle with dresses and am constantly searching for them. I try them on all the time. I probably try on 20 or more for every 1 that I like and I may only purchase one in 5 that I like because I have to truly love a dress to make a purchase. That may sound discouraging, but why not enjoy the hunt. You can learn a lot about yourself and your style in the process. I would keep working to find the correct dress. I am sure you will find it and you will look stunning for that wedding!

I sympathise entirely with the incorrect sizing issue - those stores deserve to have unsold stock. All the dresses you have been looking at are stunning, so you will not have a repeat wedding horror story. We all have a few events that we would prefer to forget what we looked like.

You are certainly giving yourself lots of time. I spent months looking for a dress for stepson #1's wedding. Stepson#2 is getting married in August. Fortunately I have something I think I can wear (not the same dress).
I have horror stories of dresses I wore to weddings.

Lisa, if it makes you feel any better, years ago I wore a loose, floral print voluminous dress to my BFF's beach wedding in Hawaii. I didn't realize until photos that it made me look 9 months pregnant. Ughhhhh. Never again!

Dress shopping is among the worst sartorial experiences ever. I feel your pain and wish you luck. Sizing is enough to make you want to not go to the event at all - I remember this from trying to find a dress to wear to my brother's wedding a couple of years ago. I ended up buying what I now realize was quite possibly the ugliest dress ever sewn: some mod looking diagonal stripe number from the BR Mad Men Collection. And now it's commemorated in pictures for the world to see . Sigh. Why did no one stop me? This is one occasion where it doesn't hurt to have a friend with you to talk you off the ledge.

This is why I wear shifts. I HATE dress shopping with a passion. Between shoulders, lack of waist, being short and busty - nothing fits. I am sure there is something out there for you though - you have height and a waist!

Aw, thank you, Angie. I'm not even trying on dresses that don't at least reach my knees, and a little bit of length was one thing these dresses DID have going for them. There was a really pretty abstract print Tahari dress that probably would have been a bit too dark (mostly black with some teal/turquoise in it) for the wedding, but the print appealed to me enough that I tried it anyway. The cut was too straight, and a little too long in the waist. I didn't go in with high expectations -- just to get some ideas, so at least I hadn't pinned my hopes to any of them.

I may order the Tadashi Shoji dress you recommended too.

And all I can say is UGH. I really hope it was not a sign of how this dress hunt is going to go. Was taking a walk downtown and stopped in a boutique -- DVF and Nicole Miller, I really do not like you right now. Sizing was ridiculously small! I know I'm not at my smallest right now, but seriously, the NM dress I tried was so tiny in a 10, I think it would have fit someone who normally wears a 4. The SA said yeah, that's why the whole rack of them was still there unsold. So it's not just me.

Ah well, onward. Hoping the dresses I ordered are more forgiving.
