Janet, and anyone looking for a road bike....

I got a great deal on my bike 'cause I picked it up at the end of the season at a discount. Still cost a small fortune but I have had so much joy from it. Also, bikes hold some value. When you really get involved you can upgrade components. Wheels are usually the first thing to upgrade.

That said, spring is swap time for lots of folks looking to change-up their ride. You might be able to get a better quality gently used bike for a decent price. Most bike shops catering to serious cyclists carry a few higher end used bikes on consignment.

Oh, and the race is just a mini sprint, so only 400M swim (thank god) and 10 mile bike with the 5K run.
Carla, I am lifting this time around. It's been twice a week pretty regularly for a couple months now, but I imagine I might go down to just Sundays. I've been doing less on the legs to give them a break from all the running but concentrating on upper body.
At least this time around I have a gym, so I can do some of the bike training indoors. My biggest issue is that the pool is 2.5 miles away. I can get a ride there from BF on his way to work, and then I only have to run home. Or I can ride my bike both ways. In essence, every swim workout is going to have to be a brick. I don't really see a way around it. I could walk home I guess, but in the heat that may get less and less appealing.

I remember I needed a road bike when I did this race before. I was practicing on an old cruiser type Schwinn that was at the rental condo as a tour around town kind of thing!
No rental companies in town. I had to privately contact a guy who organized rides for his church and agree to have him loan me a bike for 36 hours for $50 for the charity. It was all very weird. Leaving it on a prescribed address's doorstep afterward, etc. It ended up matching my suit lol!
This time around I have a $90 Walmart special and it's just going to have to do. http://www.walmart.com/ip/26-R.....a/23428861

Carla, I was chatting/texting with a friend yesterday who is a long-time serious competitive cyclist -- he is going to go with me to a great local bike shop to look at new options. There's a Trek I'm eyeing. They're not cheap, but I guess I could sell my old bike (which is only 5 years old and a nice Gary Fisher) to offset the cost.

Janet, you HAVE to get yourself a road bike! I have an uncommon bike (for where I live, anyway) that I just adore but there are some really sweet rides out there. And pay the extra money to have a real bike fitting.

Trek and Specialized and Scott are making some really nice bikes at good price points. If it's in the budget, get a carbon fibre bike. A road bike is better for tri'athlon than a tri bike, unless you are going to do an Ironman.

I ride a LITESPEED Archon C-3. DS has a Trek Madone 5.

What do other cyclists out there ride?

Yeah, you can get faster if you don't have a lot of races/times. You can train better, and race smarter. Work on the bike and the transitions.

I'm not fast..best marathon at 40 - 4:44:02, lots of 2:20 halfs, mostly 1:10 - 10 k's and 35 min 5k's these days. I started with 1:50 sprint tris and was consistent with that time for 6 years until 2012. I added weight training to the swim-run-bike cycle, and did more events (3 in 2012 and 4 in 2013) and went under 1:45 consistently including 2 x 1:40. Gains all around, but mostly a faster bike time, and something left in the legs for the run (thank you evil personal trainer Kevin and your leg workouts!)

My next goal is to go under 1:40. I don't think this will be the year, since 'the move' and all it involves has really impacted my ability to get to the gym. Oh well. Next year I go up an age group (55-60)!

FWIW, it is the 'career' athletes who experience the decline after 40 the hardest. Having competed at such a high caliber from youth, the effects of age are truthfully reflected in older age. Older 'fitness lifestyle' amateur athletes who compete less frequently might change things up a lot between events-loose weight, train better, invest in better equipment, learn efficiencies, eat better, etc. and this can translate to better personal times.

Kim, I feel better now! I guess I hear from so many really athletic friends (via FB etc.) about their fast times (you know, the ones who do a nice easy 6 miles every other day in about 50 min) that I feel ashamed of my stubborn 11-12 minute mile pace. Even when I'm training for an event, my speeds don't improve much, although my ability to eliminate walk breaks does.

I've been enjoying my bike time so much, I think I'm signing up for the Seagull Century in September. It's as easy as 100 miles can be because the eastern shore of MD is nice and flat (and scenic!). I'm already capable of riding 40 miles in a day, so my training curve is not too steep. In fact, I think I'm about to start shopping for a new bike to make it easier -- right now I'm riding a mountain bike, and a lighter, faster bike will mean an easier time completing long miles.

It's funny, a little over three years ago, I never thought I'd do any of this stuff.

My best ever 10k was 1:03 and my (only) Half was 2:35.
I ran that half with my BFF and it was our first ever. We were 50. We called it Half Century VS Half Marathon.

I'm quite proud of that time, and I'm sure it could have been faster, but we were having too much fun, and I run 4 minutes, walk one. She wasn't used to the walk breaks (which is how I had trained) so she was afraid we'd slow up other runners who were behind us.

I told her we were in the last corral before the half marathon walkers. If we slowed them up, we'd just have to WALK the race to finish! So, we weren't expecting to go fast, just to finish without being overrun by walkers. A good goal, I think! LOL

Mo, I'm impressed. A Tri is a big accomplishment!

Marin, that helps - thanks!
Janet, those are completely respectable times! I just did my 10K on Saturday and it was 57:43 something. If I remember my half was 2:13? I did take a potty break, which I would avoid if I do one again. Anyway, times very similar to yours. I'm not winning any medals here. Just racing against myself

Oh, and I never ran until 37 myself. We're just late bloomers.

I've thought about doing a sprint tri too, but I try not to think about times since they just depress me. Says the woman who NEVER ran until age 45. I am so slow it takes me 2:30 to finish a half marathon, and at my fastest, I was thrilled to finish a 10k once in just over an hour. So yeah, I suck at running, but I just keep doing it at my own pace. I can only trust that all the other runners aren't laughing at my efforts.

My consolation is that I'm way better on a bike and in water than I am at running.

I am likely going to try a sprint tri in July that I first did 6 years ago. Is it realistic to expect the same, or even better, times? I'm not as fast a runner as I once was, but I'd like to think I'm smarter as far as racing. I finished less than a minute over 1:15.
I'd love to break 1:15 this time. My run time isn't as quick but I think I might be able to make it up on the swim. Am I kidding myself? lol
Do you find you improve over the years or that age indeed starts to slow one down? Thanks for any input.

Edit: then, 38, now 44.
