Rach, you crack me up! Thank you for the link. This book is a little gem! My god the examples are hilarious. I'm asking our English department to get it.
Degenerative grammar lol. Degenerative Grammair Disease (DGD, as in, "Ya know, You ain't know shit 'bout life or nothin' t'ill you got DGD, man. I have it you has it then what the matter, y'know what I meeeeeean?") could very well be what many of my students are unfortunately afflicted with, but they are brave, and like the good little troopers they are they read Émile Zola.
Which personally floors me.
I'm the lucky one.
Ok so outfits with the Annie 50 shorts are more degenerative, which is the direction I want.
Marina, thank you for underlining the proportions! It's something I'm sensitive about, and your comment opens my eyes on what is it I don't like so much about my TH shorts. They are low waist! Argh, they should join the pile with all the other rejects from my recent purge. I think I will be looking for the same shorts, but higher waist which *should* be an easier thing this year. In any case, I am grateful for your detailed analysis, and also for reassuring me. That was very thoughtful of you.

You definitely don't have stumpy legs!

# 1 and #6: I really loved #1 (with or without the jacket) and #6. Both outfits have flawless proportions - and it is hard to put shorts+leggings without creating a sort of 80's teen-ish vibe, but both look youthful without looking teen-ish at all. Really loved both.
#5 has good proportions too, but I think the top and the boots sort of clash a little bit - they have different vibes/styles (but I think it would work with your leather jacket).
#7 proportions look a little odd to me. It's just my opinion, but I believe the light shorts + dark belt/dark between dark top and legs sort of break the outfit in many separate parts (maybe dark jeans would put all pieces together).

Haha, krish: I read ‘degenerative’ grammar at first...

UO lookbook pics do seem to involve a lot of sunshine... I wouldn’t buy their shoes, but I find their quality ok. But anyways, what I think is that they’re ‘street’, which shares some qualities with badass, but is not entirely synonymous.

So, ya, that’s kinda why I like 1-6 a little more than 7. # 1-6 have less sunshine, lol. More likely to have ‘degenerative grammar.’ Lol - have you ever seen this English grammar book: https://books.google.com/books.....ead_button

I am enjoying your journey to and through badassery. I suspect most people have a bit of BA in them. I think it is easier to embrace it and let it out to kick some butt as we get older and I love that!
I think your comment “.....it’s so fun!” is key. How you feel will be your best guide. Given your college and teaching position, I think you can wear your shorts and I like them best with the opaque tights. I also love the Moto jacket! I prefer the contrast......it really lets the shorts show off.
I can’t wait to see your next BA outfits!

When you accept yourself, the whole world accepts you (Lao Tzu).

As a teacher, it is important to be your authentic self, so if that is how you feel dressed in this badass style, then your students are sure to get on board.

Shevia, you're very kind. But my students have a very big heart too. How could we, team of teachers, be different towards them? And they really want to learn. That's why my job is the best in the world.

Rach, I didn't know one could associate badassery to a specific catergory. I thought it had to do with a general "I don't care" or " in your face" look which I am trying to do while remaining tasteful.

I checked out Urban Outfitters and to me, their outfits seem very young, made for teenagers. Somehow on the pictures, the quality of their garments don't seem very high either. Lots of loose jersey, ill-defined cuts, haphazardly constructed denim.

This is not the look I am aiming at. It's not about feeling "free" and "young" and "lots of sunshine around me therefore no one sees this dress pulls on the wrong side" nor "I look like a jam jar but it's okay because I'm 20 and it's cute". (lol)

This said, I could take the above outfits, describe them with the same mean eye and come up with funny captions too. Example pic 1: "I came to school today but there was a bunch of snow I had to soldier though and also my home is not heated properly so I had to layer these shorts on top to remain warm enough. Or maybe I'm squatting a hangar right now. Teacher's pay sucks", Or Pic 3: "Hey I sell drugs*",
(*btw I don't, this is just a joke), or Pic 7: "I lead a double life and it's the other one that counts most for me".

I really like this look, and think it would be fine for teaching in the type of school you’re at. I mean, provided you have the opaque tights it’s all good. I think all the pics are good proportionally. I think the first two is needing something to liven it up a bit, a third piece of some kind. The rest are perfecto.

Unfrumped I hear you, but on me, any longer shorts immediately look like bermuda or even culottes, which is a look I don't necessarily detest, but which I don't associate with badassery. About the ease you describe, I hear you, and I will be on the look out this year again for this elusive fantastic pair that would provide this on my pearish midsection/thighs. Upping a size doesn't work because then it's way too loose around the waist.

Below these are bermuda shorts. They look like a skirt.

Rach, yes, literature and French, but in the core programs, in a system where students who would be 1-2 yr university elsewhere in Canada or the States. Here they go through a 2 yr college called Cegep, university prep school if you will. Therefore, I teach literature, but to people who will go into all fields not just Arts. Which is why I love my job. And which is why it's kind of ok to project a more "artsy" look. More specifically, we are in a region where because of multiple circumstances, many kids arrive wildly unprepared both in linguistic and reading skills. A good proportion are intimidated, and have received the message educational instances that they are failures in French (their mother tongue). Or that they aren't cut for academic studies. Or they've never read a novel before, and no one in their family has either. And then to top it of, they are millenals - or, now, more and more, GenZ, who have their own particularities. They come to my class terrified at making mistakes, because not only is it an unpleasant humiliating experience to start with, it is potentially vitriolic to their self esteem. These kids face challenges we never had. They have less experience being in larger groups, interacting face-to-face, away from the security blanket of being behind a screen. Self esteem and feeling safe is at the base of learning. So there is an ice to be broken there for sure. All this long tour in the world of rural Quebec education questions just to say that wearing badass outfits as a teacher might not be so out of place there. I'd rather them see me as someone who is a bit ridiculous than a stuckup, because it will determine if they accept to lower their defenses and accept making mistakes together or not. Also, lastly, my main goal is to promote, encourage, even force reading on them (lol) so if I am too distant this won't work!

Sorry for this, I felt I needed to explain! (Rach I'm afraid you opened a pandora's box...!) However, about the rest of your comment, which is really what you were saying: New Drab, now that term is new for me. I looked it up quickly and found only Drab-to-fab concept, which I think is not at all what you mean. Would you be so kind to elaborate? As for the shorts, if you're looking for a pair, I can only recommend the one I have and on the link I gave they were on sale too.

This adventure in Badass-ness is quite interesting and engaging, I must say Are you teaching French? French literature?

Out here in California, I can see this in a classroom easily - but not I admit so easily in other parts of the US. I definitely prefer the ‘new’ versions. Denim and black nylons aren’t strictly badass to me... I think they’re more New Drab. Which is interesting.

I’d try shorts instead of a miniskirt for the bakery now, except I don’t own a single pair of shorts anymore I don’t think. Lol.

These are fun casual looks to
me. Even so I prefer the look of a slightly longer short- not Bermuda but an inch or 2 linger so the hit the thigh where it starts to narrow. I also like the shorts leg and crotch to have some ease. However that look may be not match what you want to see in the mirror for your style descriptors! But I would do it with that shorts fit and then amp up the edginess in top or footwear.

I too am enjoying your style explorations. I think these all look good on you. Definitively badass. I can't comment on the appropriateness for teaching but you know your environment and I don't. I did have a colleague who frequently wore shorts over heavy tights. She wore her shorts in a mid thigh length. They were semi-fitted like a trouser not snug. I felt she always looked appropriate for our casual medical office.

I'm also really enjoying your new style direction. I like these outfits and I think you have the perfect shorts for them, which is usually the biggest problem. However, I would like the see the tights in #7 with the black shorts instead of leggings. It's not the opaqueness that I have a problem with, it's that the leggings aren't smooth enough. I can see the legging's wrinkles and how they bunch up at your knees. Aida wears this outfit formula occasionally and you might be able to look at her old WIW's if you're looking for inspiration.

Wow, no 7 is really cool! Badass it is. Looks great! To my eye, the top and the jacket slightly soften the look and make it really beautiful.

Depending on what you teach, and your colleges norms, I could see wearing 1-6 in the classroom. (It’s absolutely something that faculty in art and design would wear at my university, though probably not the med school faculty.) 7 seems more like weekend wear to me- cute, but a lot more casual.

I love this look and I think the original version #7 is the best. Yet, I personally wouldn't wear any of them to teach (I teach university students), because the outfit does not project enough authority for me, and I would also worry that the students might think I 'm trying too hard. I would wear it on weekends though.

My first year college roommate used to wear this look a lot, with black wool shorts that basically functioned like a short skirt. She seemed very sophisticated to me!

For teaching, I like the looks with the black shorts. I might like to see slightly more polished footwear, maybe something menswear inspired? The jeans shorts outfit seems like a fantastic casual look, I am not sure I would wear it for teaching but I am a fuddy-duddy anglophone. ;-)

I super love your attitude here and willingness to experiment!

My heart sank a bit before I saw the photos as shorts over tights are a bit of a teen uniform around here but do you know what,l think you can pull it off!I think the secret lies in the tailoring, nice tailored shorts like you ve got on work a treat.

Lyn and Runcarla, excellent point. So first outfits may be too monochrome, and too dark. Noted! Will work on that.

Agree with lyn67. About #7. A little contrast is needed, and the lighter colour of the jeans work. I think you have the right garments to put this look together.
