Thanks Bijou, one certainly can't go wrong with the classic style. I do have a black knee length one like that. Maybe I should shift my search in that direction.

Chris, when it comes to trench coats, I go with the classic Burberry influenced styles. I have a short double breasted coat in black and have a single breasted beige coat.

Jenni Z good point. Angie has a good expression for that ... something about when a HEWI goes past it's expiration date ...

Back when you first posted I also went down that rabbit hole and found a lot of cute raincoats at Macy's - even a lot of petites! But then I decided I would rather spend money on other things right now. Very tempting though!

Yes I don’t actually buy petites that much, partly because they are less available here, but the one petite cut jacket I have does fit very nicely.
You probably do have to be careful if you feel you may be “over” that particular style.

LaPed - I like that Avec Les Filles one too but as a regular size, and judging by the model, it would hit at shin length on me and that would probably throw off the whole look. Plus the sleeve belt-thingies are right at the cuff and would make shortening the sleeves very tricky. Probably not the right coat for me but I do like it. I may look around to see if I can find it on another site that lists the actual length. Ah found it... 42" long in size small.

Thanks slim cat!

Jenni Z thanks, and yes we do have similar body types and certainly similar body hieght! I do like that assymetric one but I just got rid of a black very worn early/late winter coat (meaning not a super warm one) in exactly that style and wonder if I'm over the style itself. It does seem to have become a bit of a classic. IT's also not a petite although CK brand sometimes works for me in regular sizes.

I really like the last Find Chris, the asymmetrical Calvin Klein one. I wonder if the shape would be good? ( You and I have a similar body type, and both around the 5 foot 1 height, so I sort of imagine the items you are looking at, on me.)

I can see that light icy blue is your favorite color and hope the right raincoat will come along.
I was looking for cropped light blue jacket with kinda same mixed results- the dressier ones are brighter and more saturated in color not quite the pale blue I’m interested in.
Will follow your search- good luck!

I like the long anorak from Avec Les Filles! I wonder how iridescent it is in person...

They greyer blues are more appealing to me right now, too. I have an older turquoise rain coat that I don't reach for much. It's a gorgeous colour, but when I put it on it just feels so bright!

Thanks Angie. I know turquoise is a favorite color of yours, and there have been times when I liked and wore in, just not feeling it right now. The tan color would be great bit I'd really rather have a longer coat for a raincoat.

kkards, no I had not seen that one - looks very interesting! Thanks I'll definitely check it out.

Personally, I LOVE the pastel turquoise on you, Chris! The black buttons tone it down and work well with your black footwear. The back pleat would probably be fine if you cut the stitch.

That said, YOU have to wear it and feel fab, so back it goes.

How about the tan?

My gut reaction when I took this out of the package was that the color is more like teal than the icy grey blue I wanted. I’m not really a fan of teal, especially not with dark denim. Dark teal paired with black, maybe. It's not a good color for an item I’d want to wear based on weather, not based on what outfit I was wearing. I also wish the buttons were a little smaller.

I thought I’d model it for you in case anyone else is interested. This is the Medium Petite, which is a tiny bit big, but a smaller size would pull across my thighs. I'm 5'1". I do think the shape is more flattering than my older trench (which I bought when my waist was slimmer), but ultimately I think I'd prefer a knee length raincoat for more coverage.

So, in summary, I don't like the color, don't want any of the other colors, and would prefer a longer raincoat, so I'm returning it.

It comes in black, watermelon, yellow, and stone. See finds below plus black. It also comes in REGULAR sizes. in all those colors plus lavender and navy. The quality is pretty good, what you'd expect from London Fog.

#1 is my old light blue trenchcoat
#2 + 3 are the new one that’s going back (it's puffing out at the back because it has an inverted pleat that I didn't cut open)

Thanks Suntiger! I'm with you on strongly preferring a hood over an umbrella for raincoats. So much simpler!

Thanks NancyW. In my everyday world a trench would stand out as more polished and formal than the norm. Not that anyone would care that much, but I do live in a very casual world.

I use my trench as a mild weather casual jacket. Fleece or parka for an ‘exercise’ walk. Trench for every other type of outing. I like the polish factor and never feel overdressed for the moment. Even if the moment is the farmer’s market. This choices are all so cheerful and lively!

I think I like the lavendar one more too, but not waterproof would be problematic if you have a lot of rain in your transitional weather. I hesitate because you said you don't wear the other one that much.

I don't own a trench, just hooded raincoats (though I've gotten wet through one and should pass it on...). I don't like to bother with umbrellas cause I carry so much else all the time :/

Joy, I agree. I do own a classic black trench with a removable lining that
I don't wear much but when I want it I know it's there.

Style Fan that's a great coat. If Burberry ever made petite sizes I'd
give them a good look but they never have I have a black beltless waterproof hooded coat (not the trench coat) with a liner that I've used a lot for travel and it's been great to have when I visited a place where it was raining some of the time.

I like the light blue trench coat that Angie found for you. It looks like the perfect 'casual' trench. A classic trench works for me. I wear mine a lot in the spring and fall. I also take mine with me when I travel. Mine is at least 15 years old.

I try to always have a classic black trench in the closet as a topper for dressy occasions and funerals. My current black trench has a removable hood and zip out liner, useful for cold times. I also prefer no belt. If it does have one, it is usually permanently tied in the back.
Rachylou, I think you are right about petite sizes. I have seen several department store do away with petite departments in recent years. They seem to slowly be ordering less in petites.

Rachylou - interesting how the belted coat silhouette works so well for some and not for others. I am like you in that I almost always want a sweater or some other warm layer under a coat like these so I usually size up.

Suz - great point about looking at lifestyle as a consideration. In my world even a "walk about town" is actually more like "walk in the woods: even in non-Covid times

Tilly - great point about trench coats being a little tough as a "shorty". I have a black lined one that is a long term keeper and hits right at the knee so it's a perfect fit, but I don't feel like wearing a black coat for everyday these days. However, I wonder what you mean about "new petite ranges more retailers are coming out with" .... I find it just the opposite. For example I just looked at Marks & Spencer petites in tops specifically, and found ONE cardigan sweater in 2 colors, and ONE button down shirt in white, and that was IT. I think, at least in the US, that women (and probably guys too) are gradually becoming taller and bigger and the number of us who need petite sizes is shrinking. What I see is that the larger sizes that are become more prevalent.

I don't really wear trench coats but quite like that one without a belt. Pretty color and I think the style is a little more casual than the classic which could suit you better. Glad you ordered it to try.

I love a trench coat and find them so useful in this shoulder season in the northeast. Look forward to seeing the one you purchased!

Always find trench coats a bit hard as a shortie. Loving the new petites ranges so many retailers are coming out with.

I love a classic trench -- for me -- but it works well on my body type. And with my current climate. I also have a slightly less classic trench (shorter, more flared) and guess what? I wear it even more. I love it.

Having said that, I don't really wear either right now because my outings are so casual. I'm all about the walk in the woods, not going to town. So for my current lifestyle, one like the one Angie showed would work a whole lot better!

I have learned a classic trench does me no favours. And I always need a sweater with a trench. I do better with a ‘lab coat’-like trench. And I’m a fan of the light blue trench

Hah Jenni Z - I've owned quite a few classic trench coats over the years, including some with removable liners. They were workhorses during most of my career but not so much in the last say 5 years of my working life when The Big Casualization happened and I was doing less business travel.

Thanks cat2. We'll have to have a group try-on!

That's a nice coat Runcarla, and I can see it working well on you.

I decided to order the one slim cat and Angie recommended, in a couple of sizes. I'll post an update once they arrive. Macys is taking over week for deliveries these days so estimating 4/13 or so.

I am with cat2, I love ( and in fact need) items that flare out from the waist, as I am still thicker there. My favourite winter coat is that swing shape and still suits me perfectly after 10 years.
The coat slim cat found is a similar shape though perhaps, gorgeous colour, and less fussy without the belt?
Lovely to see you back, Chris.
