80's fashion! At least it's something that's recognizable! I don't know the difference in the decades anymore nowadays.
Mid 80's is when I first discovered fashion. I did the whole Madonna '85 Like a Virgin look, wearing lace bows in my hair, the fingerless lace gloves, lots of black rubber bangles on my wrist, the floral blazer with shoulder pads, dressing in either pastel or neon, the jellies shoes and bag, the long strand of pearls with a knot in the front, the permed/crimped hair with big bangs. Guess jeans and tote bag and sweatshirt with the bear logo, stirrup pants, parachute pants, Swatch watch and Bennetton, bandannas from Millers Outpost, long purple sweater dress with bright green handprints and a belt. It's so crazy (but fun) that everyone wanted to dress the same way!

Fun to hear the 1980s reminiscing. I was a teenager so wore some of it especially from the mid 80s onwards but there were some big influences early too with tiered minis, ruffles, the knickerbockers and leggings.

What I liked was the creativity - tie dyes and home made tube skirts and painting white vans. And interesting hair too with tints and undercuts and perms and bandannas etc. There are tribes of teens who are experimental but so many are quite similar in what they wear - and long hair is ubiquitous.

I'm actually very excited about the return of the 80s!! I even purchased some late 70s and 80s sewing patterns to play with. I love the 70s-meet-80s season of fashion, where there was some architectural structure in lines, but also some soft ease and slouch holding over from the 70s.

I admit, I am a bit too young to have lived through the trends you mentioned--at least as an adult. What I would not look forward to is living through the 90s beige, pleated khaki pants again. (Preppy looks just aren't me, and don't flatter my style or my body.)

Haha, I was in my fashion prime in the 1980s, permed hair, shoulder pads and all. I had a fun time participating in all the style trends of the era. Princess Diana was the big style icon of the time, but I can't imagine myself wearing much of those styles again.

I’m with all of you shuddering at our ‘80s fashion. The difference now is that all of it is optional! Back then we had no option other than what was in the stores. I was a petite, skinny 20-something with a small head/face, and I spent the entire decade feeling like everything was too big for me, including my hair. I did like the edginess of a lot of 80s stuff though, like skinny black pants and pointy boots. And nowadays being able to cherry-pick the best of the 80s -or of any decade, or all of them at once, is awesome!

Haha, I don't remember much of 80's fashion. For the first half I was in college and wore jeans and hoodies exclusively and then I was in accounting and wore suits. I do remember a nice London Fog trench I had that has never really been in or out. I also did the perm in my hair and had big shoulder pads. I also had some of the Candie's platforms (anyone remember those?) - I guess that was more like 79-80. They hurt my feet so bad but I felt very stylish in them. I miss very little of those styles.

If 80s never circled back, I will be just fine. Probably, the worst fashion I ever wore! Huge shoulder pads on my petite frame, always a perm and big hair, poet blouses with big, gathered sleeves, massive jewelry. Hope to never see it trending again! It’s a lot! I’m happy I was young and dove into it with enthusiasm. Don’t know how my mother, who was in her 50s, felt.

I loved leg warmers as a fashion item for a while in the 80s. I wore them scrunched over jeans and long over knickerbockers, like over the knee boots :).

I remember that poster!

I had a big pirate shirt that I think I bought at a renaissance fair in like 1982. And this guy I was obsessed with borrowed it from me and never gave it back and we lost touch for over three decades. Then we reconnected and, among many other events, he returned the shirt, which he somehow still had in his possession. I’m not sure where I put it but here is the picture I took at the time (9 or 10 years ago).

I actually just bought two pairs of leg warmers! I don't remember them as a normal trend in the 1980s since I was really too young, but they were around well into the 90s for dance wear. Very practical for wearing with tights. The ones I got now are for wearing while sitting at a desk in the winter, since I usually wear skirts and dresses.

Haha Cat2 and Murph!

When I think of the puffy pirate shirt I think of Seinfeld always.....I think I have seen this look from time to time. And I have fingerless gloves - but not lacy ones - mine are functional and merino.

I guess moleskin is like a brushed corduroy. Corduroy comes and goes here but has never really been as popular as it was in the 1980s. I wonder if that is due to our warmer weather and/or the variety of other pants and denim styles.

Actually, the early '90s white pirate shirt is fringe trending soon, cat2!

Sal, the '80s were extreme! Unapologetically expressive. Loved it! Some awful trends too, I'll admit (BIG teased hair, and lots of make-up and hairspray were among the less great, IMO). But brilliant looks for the most part. All the architectural silhouettes we see today plus pleated pants, volume, oversized fits, clashing brights, neon, carrot pants, rainbow hair, high rises with shorter tops, boxy fits, bubble hems, statement tracksuits, acid wash, dainty shoes, power dressing, SNEAKERS!, gender-neutral dressing = '80s influences.

Cookie, I see those skirts in your future!

I can totally see you in your jazzercise kit and legwarmers Jenni!!

LJP - I am not really wanting any of these trends back either. For a couple of years the moleskin pants were everywhere here. Mostly in navy, chocolate brown, olive green. Now they are mostly only menswear - my Dad wears them!

Yes Cee, 1982 was my date for knickerbockers too....

Angie - I can totally see you in these looks - how fun! And I agree that we are taking some of the good 1980s influences (suiting, denim). And interesting about the perms - pleased there have been improvements in techniques.

Maybe we will have to see you in your knickerbockers Jaime....and yes why stirrup patns and not knickerbockers? Why acid wash denim and not moleskins?

Cookie - can totally see you in a bubble skirt!

OK, OK, lol. I guess those were under my radar at the time. Just miss me with the giant shirts and massive shoulder pads.

Cookie! Those '80s hitch-up skirts, ra ra skirts, and bubble skirts have your name on them!

Sal, thanks for the blasts from the past!

<Banging shoe on desk for pics of red knickerbocker suit>

The 80s were a pretty grim fashion era for me personally. But this time if the things come back there will be plenty of other things for me to wear!

Interesting question! Not sure about moleskin - I only associate it with cleaning a car for some reason. Agree with Carla about the double belts and the capris for sure. I personally do own a pair of knickerbockers but they are vintage. I wonder if they will come back with the popularity of balloon pants. Legwarmers I have not seen nor ever wore, even in the 80s. The million dollar question is why this and not that.

As for perms - they are VERY popular in Asian countries across the genders. They aren't spiral, frizzy teased perms though. They have been improved!

Sal, OOOOOH YES! I wore lots of pairs of knickerbockers and hectic leg warmers in the early '80s. Like you! I had CORDUROY knickerbockers, and a red knickerbocker jumpsuit. I'd wear both again with a grown-up and modern integrity.

Double belts were my faves!!! I had white, red and blue.

HEADS UP: We're seeing lots more '80s influence come through in 2026. I'm almost finished with the trends posts. Also, all the oversized fits you've been seeing for a good few years is '80s driven. There are shoulder pads in lots of toppers and some tops.

What we're not seeing is the worst of '80s fashion. Today's fashion is taking the BEST of every decade and improving it.

I see someone occasionally wearing moleskins, but knickerbockers ? ...Not since around 1982.
