I think I know what you're saying. I've been a pretty late adopter of trends, and very picky even on the ones I do adopt.

- Flared/full midi skirts and dresses I will always wear. But I was wearing them before they were a trend, so I think that's more just my own thing.

- Once for a costume I had to get some 1960s pointy-toe pumps, and I fell in love with the ultra-refined look that sets off full skirts so well. Once I woke up and realized it was a current trend, there was no stopping me. High heel, low heel, or even flat, they keep my skirts from looking babydoll or little-girl-ish. I'm not letting go of these until they look really dated... and I'm honestly skeptical that they will, or that I'll care!

- Skinnies/leggings are working really well for me. I also hope/believe that they won't go away quickly.

- I'm suspicious that the sneaker trend may go away, or at least keep morphing so quickly that one year's trendy sneaks are hopelessly dated the next year. I really really hope not. I love mine, and I love that they're trendy enough and not-gear enough to look interesting with skirts and dresses as well as leggings and shorts.

I'm just now getting some maxi dresses, so they had better not be going out. If they are, well then oh well... I mean, in the end, I buy what I like and don't worry too much about what's in and what's not. I have a niece who only wears solid colors because she says prints look dated after a while. I love certain (not all) prints, and wear them because they make me happy and because for some reason I'm not sure of I think I look better in prints (at least up near my face) than I do in solids. At any rate, I'm not going to forego my enjoyment of prints or anything else that makes me happy or that flatters my figure just because the Powers That Be up and decide they're not in style any more. That said, I don't want to dress like I'm in a time warp. I'm not a fashion forward type of gal, but I do try to keep up with what's current so I can decide what trends to follow and what trends to skip.

Did I miss something? Are maxi dresses out? Are you just tired of them? Both? Neither? I understand you are planning to follow your own sense of style. I'm just curious about trends because it's impossible to judge them where I live. We are always behind in adopting and in abandoning trends. If I travel to a city I can look like I am coming out of a time capsule!
I love the idea of ignoring trends and wearing what I like regardless, which is what think you are saying here. In fact, I applaud you for this. I have tried to adopt a fairly classic style because I do travel and I end up feeling silly, if I am too far off the mark in a way that doesn't look deliberately styled, but off target.

So, back to the maxi dresses, in or out? (I love them, but of course I'm tall so they're a good style for me.)

I tend to plod along after the trends have moved on. I'm like Rachylou my closet is an archive of all the wrong stuff. Mostly from the 60s & 70s

I stuck with my stompy boots when everyone else went with refined footwear. I think of it as a signature item.

Shirt dresses, esp. short/cap sleeved ones, seem to be all over the place, much more than last year. I notice because this is a style that works for me and probably a lot of other women so I figure it may stay for awhile.

I am seeing a lot more rompers. If it catches on with the younger set and they don't mind the public bathroom hassle while also sporting a shoulder bag, maybe it will last because a lot of them look cute, at least in the photos.

I am seeing more shoes that would otherwise be ballet flats or pumps that are sporting straps or laces. With so many of us complaining about narrow heels that can't hold ballet flats or pumps, I would think that this trend would stick around since it will sell more shoes.

Other than those people who are so into a "dated" look that it seems like they walked out of an old home movie, most people don't register enough about passing trends to take notice whether someone is sporting the current heel and toe shape, for example. And with the rapid recycling of trends, few can be bothered to discern whether that cherry print might be vintage or has just come around again. And prints tend to be the feature that is most of its time.

When you think about it, unless a person is mostly known at arm's length in the public eye, that first impression is soon over and people can quickly learn how they like your company and whether or not you're up to speed enough in your field, regardless of what you fancy wearing. I don't think it's something to fret over.

I am finding myself being less and less concerned about longevity of current trends. I am in a fairly comfortable place with my style now. I feel that I will follow my own timeline when I am tiring of somethin, or when something hangs around a while and has not been worn I can decide when to say good by to it. This summer maxi's got put away (have 2 nice ones and they may come back-then there is always Halloween), lace up flats and lower block heels are replacing ballerina flats, gladiator sandals are still hanging on, and infinity scarves have gone( I just don't like them). An getting tired of high low tops, but apparently I am a minority.

although distressed, ripped ,torn jeans were supposed to be going out, they seem to still be really big-don't own any and do not plan to, ever! I think skinnies, ankle pants, crops, rolled and cuffed pants and jeans are going to be around for a very looooong time. Looking like block heels are going to really take off, and this makes me happy.

Anyone else feel that even though something may be going out you still like it, and may just keep on wearing it? At my age I am thinking about the Red Hat poem a while back. Don't see those silly red hat ladies anymore but now I understand that mind set better..
