I think that’s a good realisation Lisa - taking a nod to a trend rather than a full on trendy piece.

I love wide legs and have been wearing them in different ways for four ish years. But when I added wide leg and cargo pants I feel a bit OTT. They look “cool” but I feel off. I now wear them as the most expensive track pants ever.

I try not to spend too much time and energy on clothing and style now, but not paying enough attention when purchasing new-to-me looks like the polo sweater here can end up costing more than the initial buy when it's something I'll never wear .

My thoughts here, after reading so many helpful and insightful comments, are:

When looking to add a new silhouette or cut or whatever it is, don't buy a garment that has too many disparate design elements (as we used to call them back in the day). In the case of the sweater, we have an open knit, basic plain short sleeves (which can be inherently unflattering ) , a polo collar, a v neck AND stripes. Too much going on in one garment for almost anyone (besides the 5'10" 125 lb model in the stock photo) . I cannot actually redesign this in my mind to make it less preppy.

This same issue happened with my first foray into a barrel leg pant: they were first paired (retail options ) with ultra /high rises which NEVER work for me and only emphasize my stomach. So that design element PLUS a new leg cut and I thought I could never wear this look. It was too cartoonish for my liking.... But after persevering and finding a few brands that offer the softer barrel with a mid-rise (i.e. fewer design elements ) .....I'm now a fan.

The blue top looks so great on you and suits your style. You look great in clothing that has a little bit of flow and ease to it - not shapeless but intentional ease. The stripe top is not in your comfort zone - you can see tthat in the photo - too preppy and buttoned up - I woud guess for your liking. I think your style might include a little boho with a liittle huntswoman vibe.

I have also purchased clothing thinking this is going to work for me, worn the item and realized I hated it on me. I just want to donate the item immediately and get it out of my wardrobe!

I find even at 67 honing in on my style is still a challenge. The other factor is many women of my age are dressing purely for comfort while I am still happy wearing, although comfortable, elevated casual outfits. I try to ignore my feeling of being overdressed and focus on dressing to make me happy.

Love your shoes BTW.

Love the blue top - great look for summer ( fun necklace as well )! Polo shirts/sweaters are non starters for me - last time I worn them was working for GAP years ago - lol ( it's great on some people but too much for me ).
Barrel leg pants are fab on you - wish they would work for me - but they look better on person with some curves.

Lisa! So happy to see you! And you’re looking so good the bright blue -love the color, love the shape and so good with the slightly barreled pants.
As for buying into trends -and then regretting it. We’ve all been there, ok maybe I can’t speak for everyone but I’ve currently been there. And more often then I’d like to admit. I’m trying to own it, and be more selective and most of the time I’m getting it right. But I’m also trying to move on faster when I’m not right. Try it, don’t like it, get it out of the house - yes to feeling bad but more time for someone who does like to enjoy it.

SO good to "see" you again, Lisa! You look amazing. As many other posters have said, I think you look fab in both outfits, but I completely understand that when something doesn't feel right - for whatever reason - it never gets worn. So trust your gut and move on.

Unfortunately, I hear you on the weight not budging thing. I'm stuck, too, and that does not feel great. Some days I feel better/less bloated than others, but the number on the scale isn't moving. Regardless, from an outside perspective, you really do look great!

Like everyone else seems to be saying I love both outfits on you but have to say the bright blue is such a great color on you. And yes the stripes are a little preppy. I love preppy, but you don't, so goodbye to that sweater.

Lisa, the first paragraph....you are not alone.

As for the polo sweater - maybe it's also the short sleeves that add to the masculine feel of it. I never like short sleeves, and have very few instances in my wardrobe.

Let's all only wear what makes us feel good, ok?!

Right there with you on the weight issues at our age! I can't decide if your husband's comment was supportive or dismissive or just funny. Men are ridiculous sometimes!

I don't like Polo shirts for myself either. Partly my broad shoulder bustiness but mostly that I was in college when Izods and then actual Polos overtook the fashion world. My college was preppy enough as it was but once that style hit you couldn't get away from them. I tried it, didn't like, never looked back.

Love the blue though! Good to see you again.

I, too, am happy to see you post WIWs Lisa. Like most others, I don't see any problem with the first top, but as usual, it's your feelings that count. I quite like that top. Nautical - check! Polo neck - double check! Preppy - triple check! It's right up my alley.
The blue top is a really good color for you and the boho light totally works, so enjoy!

Lisa, it is really great to see you back! Both outfits look great, but the striped top made me think, “Who are you, and what have you done with Lisa?” It lacks that certain sort of playfulness, that tweak-your-nose understated wry humor that I find I associate with you.

Whereas the blue top lights you up, and you just glow. You look like you’re ready for a grand adventure with Peter, Wendy and the lost boys. Love love love that silhouette and color for you!

Janet - it's definitely a short-hair thing too, I get that. I don't *want* to give off a masculine or androgynous vibe because that's not who I am, nor does that look appeal to me, so dressing with more feminine pieces cancels out the short hair . Lol.

As everyone else has said, I like the stripes on you but totally get that they aren't "you". I feel the same way in preppy, more classic styles. I agree with Janet that it is the mix of masculine and feminine that can make or break how I feel in an outfit. I also have a stink eye regarding some items that I associate with my mom wearing - we had a great relationship but it is still HER look and doesn't work for ME (in my mind).

It’s great to see you post!

The striped polo looks objectively good on you, but I totally get it. The more masculine vibe of it combined with your short hair (which is looking fab BTW) is too much masculine for the vibe you want. The blue top is gorgeous on you.

I’m kinda the opposite — I’d wear the blue color in a heartbeat, but I can feel a bit too girlie in that style of top unless I have some more masculine contrast in the outfit somehow. Combined with my longer, wavy hair, going too soft and boho with a top makes me feel less than my best. At the same time I don’t want to look harsh, which is becoming more of a factor as I get older. I’m learning!

Lisa, you have your summer formula down. The blue top and olive pants outfit, with your chunky slides is fantastic. Love the necklace with it, too. Your nod to the trends with pant shape and the sophisticated Birk-inspired slides look authentic to your style.

It's pretty clear that if those cool slides and great pants don't make the polo top work for you--a combo that should work beautifully in theory, and in fact does look good--it's just not your thing. I get sucked in sometimes, too, and I share your feeling about the polo collars. I admire them on others (like Lisa, with the butterfly avatar!) and get lured into thinking I can rock them, too. But usually they're a big nope for me.

Nice to see you Lisa. Regardless of anything else, your extremely displeased look in the striped top as compared to much more relaxed look in the blue top ends the conversation for me. The blue with olive looks fantastic. Why bother with things we don't like?

Of course I love the navy striped top, duh! Bring on anything with a traditional masculine vibe! But I totally understand how you have to feel right in something, and after a certain amount of time dressing yourself - you know what works.

Oh Donna . I hear you . Polo shirts will always be golf shirts to me . my mother wore them all the time on the course ( well we had to , actually ) and I had a similarly fraught relationship with her . Anyways I’m not a prep expert either because it’s not culturally relevant in my part of the world .

That blue is breathtakingly gorgeous on you. I have no idea what “preppy” looks like, but I would say the sweater cut is overly masculine for your style. It looks great, but I totally get why you are shaking your head. For me, I associate polo shirts with my mom — with whom I had a fraught relationship.

Thank you for your thoughts , Lisa . I believe I am uninfluenced by colour trends and only buy what I like and know works for my skin tone / hair etc . I have been wearing my considered palette of olive , some navy , cream , orange for years . I love turquoise and bright blue but need them in modern silhouettes . I made an exception for this top I have no clue what colours are trending for summer ! Funny how what used to be second nature to me is now off my radar . Silhouette is what identifies a piece as current rather than the colour , to me anyways .

You look lovely in both outfits! The blue top is a gorgeous color on you, it really brightens up your face and it's a lovely shade for summer. I also like the flowy vibe it has. I'm a sucker for a boho style.

I also like the navy and white striped polo collared shirt, with the green pants and white sandals. I'd wear this outfit! But I also completely understand when an outfit "looks good" but doesn't "feel good." And how it feels is most important. This outfit has less flow to it, preppy looks are often very structured and if that's not your current style journey for tops, it makes sense this top would feel "meh" even if it looks lovely.

One thing I like to remember with trends is that you can not only follow a trend with shapes and silhouettes (like boho tops or barrel jeans), but also with colors. When the shapes and silhouettes of the latest trends doesn't strike my eye, sometimes the colors (or patterns or prints) do.

I wear a formula of graphic tee and shorts and graphic tees and cropped jeans quite often, but this season I added coral and peach to my wardrobe because I read they were vibrant and trending colors for summer. I'm still wearing graphic tees and shorts (or graphic tees with cropped skinny jeans) but the infusion of peach and coral really freshened up my summer wardrobe.

Oh I made a similar error with an oversized striped button down too this spring!

I've been trying to open up my wardrobe to different silhouettes and looks and having trouble separating the good from the bad . The blue blouse is NOT a new look at all - that silhouette has been in my closet for years, but I admit I love it for it's ease of wear and simple flattery. I don't have to worry about something clinging or sitting oddly or being out of proportion to whatever bottoms I'm wearing - it just works for me. I know it's not the most sophisticated looking top but again I've made peace with my shopping laziness I buy from social media ads half the time now (Gap, BR, etc) .

Like your outfit with the blue blouse, a wonderful color on you.
I hear you on falling for a trend and regretting it. Cue an oversized striped button down shirt. Still have to return one I bought.

Your hair looks great, too.
