Such good problem solving. Thank you!
I have always folded my jeans so the extra fabric takes up space.
However the input from the wise Fabbers are making me rethink my storage. I hang some bottoms, so why not jeans?
We are expecting a blizzard over the next 2-3 days, so maybe I can play with my closet organization.
Thank you all for your insight

I just added a bunch of shelves for storage baskets to my closet, thinking I’d maximize the space my jeans were taking up in the baskets on the floor. But somehow they still are taking up a ton of space — and you’re absolutely right on the wider legged jeans. I can’t fold them as neatly as the straight legs so they’re hogging the baskets.

I wish I had more hanging space — I’d love to get everything off of shelves and hanging, but our closet is just not set up that way. Sweaters, long sleeve knits/tees, and jeans, casual pants, and shorts all get folded in my shelves. In doing some seasonal shuffling, I note my sweaters are a little overstuffed, and a couple of them didn’t get worn at all this winter, so they’re on notice in the holding zone while I figure out whether they’re still worthy of the space.

I have an aversion to hanging multiple items on one hanger. I have a shortage of skirt/pant hangers and have doubled up some skirts. It always annoys me to unclip one and have to put the other back on, but skirts are my least-frequently worn item so it’s not a huge inconvenience.

I store jeans on hangers like other pants similar to Irina. Once summer comes I swap the heaviest darkest colored denim for my lighter colored and weighted denim along with linen bottoms. I have space saver storage bins on top of my closet so all clothes are always within easy each. But I don't enjoy looking at out of season clothing so I rotate items as seasons change.

I put my jeans on hangers in my closet like any other pants so their shape and volume don’t bother me. Snow is gone here and I’m washing and packing away hats and scarves. These require a separate bin! I have too many but let go of them.

I tend to do what Roberta does -- I do my seasonal edit in stages. But also, I don't hang my jeans -- I fold them in a cupboard. They do take up more space than slim legged styles did but I still manage the same number of piles on the shelf somehow.

For trousers (and skirts) I have those hangers that hold mulitple pairs.

Knitwear is my biggest storage eater. And coats.

LJP I'm also done with my deep winter clothes. I shuffled out my heavy coats for my medium weight ones, and lighter pants, and I just came back from a walk freezing. Besides being totally sick of them it is something to do with the higher sun and the light that I just don't want to wear my heavier items now even though I clearly still need them.

I'm with Roberta here in finding this time of year "messy" - in more ways than one. I've already bagged up my heaviest sweaters (even though it's still totally snowy and cold here - I'm just *done*) and have pulled out a couple of springier pieces.

And to your question re: denim storage - I agree. I now have 2 drawers of jeans (black and grey in one drawer and the rest in another) and do find that barrel jeans do take up more room . I seem to accumulate jeans without realizing .........

I can relate re: packing for travel. And not just denim; and also, “ trending” silhouettes. Of course, savvy travelers do a lot with lighter, thinner fabrics for easy rolling/ packing/ layering. My problems often been trouble taking things that truly mix & match. Slimmer or straight pants line one pair of slim- straight jeans, pant like Athleta Brooklyn, straight or tapered chinos take up less room AND work with moderately longer tops like button - fronts or lower- hip T’s for good midriff coverage for activities , compared to shorter boxy tops that the wide- leg styles seem to want, and which often need a thicker knits or fabric to hang properly.

Personally, I haven't noticed storage challenges with my bottoms. I noticed it with knitwear. Chunky knits are NOT space savers :(

Funny you post this! Yesterday I had some free hours in the afternoon, and it was nearly 80 degrees (but it's supposed to snow today, go figure!), so I started reviewing and sorting items for the seasonal switch. It's early, but I usually do it in a couple of stages anyway, putting away the heaviest, most wintry sweaters, and pulling out the spring/summer weight pants.

My denim stacks are actually a little *smaller*! I let go of all skinnies and a couple of pairs of styles I'm not feeling anymore (cropped flares, an old pair of boyfriends that don't fit like boyfriends anymore, a boyfriend pair that's too baggy...). So even though I just bought two pairs of jeans, my collection has thinned a little bit.

My pile of other pants, however, has grown, so it's all evened up. I found some new styles over the past couple of years that I enjoy for summer (since I'm not crazy about wearing shorts), so my small collection of linen-blend and other breezy wide-leg pants, summer-fabric barrel shapes, and athleisure-fabrication styles like joggers that go anywhere, have all expanded. At this point I could stand to edit that collection a bit since some of those are starting to show the wear.

My challenge is the same but I am entirely to blame! I’ve added quite a few new pairs recently without culling ill fitting (I lost some weight and went down a size), and pairs I just don’t reach for. I store them folded on a shelf and easily accessible. I need to cull

I feel it in the shoulder seasons, when I still usually need (for example) warmer clothes, but am bringing out lighter weight things for the occasional warm day. I make an effort to put away the things I know I won't need, like holiday wear, velvet, heavy wool sweaters, long sleeve liners, etc.

And I also spend this time of year looking at what I didn't wear over the winter, and deciding whether to keep it around for next year. So, a little weeding, a little shifting, helps the crowded racks. It's a messy process, to be sure.

I have been having trouble keeping up with putting away my clean clothes, especially jeans. I had a pile of jeans waiting to put away and noticed that I needed more space than I have had in the past because there is much more volume of denim to store.
Funny how trends can influence your storage.
Anyone else notice? Any solutions other than more space?
