If you don't like tying the belt, you could (artfully) tie it around the back of the coat to keep it in place, it adds a little interest to the back of the coat at the waist, and if you decided you wanted a belt, you'd have it for later. Plus, I thought having a belt was one of the things that made a "trench coat" a trench ? If you'll always have an umbrella, why would you need a hood? And a belt is just one more fussy thing to mess with.
