Good grief.

I guess passersby do NOT mind their own business. I am *finished*.

So does this mean that the LF trench is it, Suz?

Yep, sometimes you gotta try the duds... I suspected the BR trench was not gonna supercede your beautiful trench. I am glad you are keeping it.

Jeanne, I just about spit out my tea at your comment!! That was the BEST! Why oh why didn't I put some hot pants on before I tried on that Zara coat! What was I thinking?

In all seriousness, though, Rae, I completely agree with you. In this case, I wasn't really upset at the stranger's comment so much as surprised at her frankness. And the fact is, she was RIGHT!

And it really did help me to try on the options. I think for the money, I've got something that will do me very well indeed, and if I find a bright one, or a great navy one, I feel I can justify that purchase, too. One thing I've recognized is that the classic style is terrific for me, either at knee length or short (just below the bum) but NOT mid-thigh- it cuts me off too much at that length, at least with tucked boots, and would work much better on a longer-leggged woman.

LOVE YLF for making space for these epiphanies!

Good point on the strangers opinions Rae - I've been known to ask other customers what they think of an item if I think the SA is just trying to make a sale and would tell me a burlap sack looked great!

Well Suz I'm sure the Zara one didn't look good because you weren't wearing it over your hotpants (or are they underpants?) like the model. That always elevates a trench.

Glad you were able to make IRL comparisons and confirm your choice. Go get a pretty scarf to go along with it and have a great trip.

Sometimes checking out the options helps us to appreciate what we have - nothing wrong with that! The LF really does look great on you.

Thumbs down to smirking SAs, but I don't mind when other shoppers chime in on what I'm trying. Another set of eyes can be helpful... as long as they stick to the item I'm deciding on and not my *current* outfit or hair color etc.

Black is always chic :)
And just when you give up the hunt (most likely on the hottest day in August when a trench is the last thing you need....) you will find a bright color trench at a good price. That's what I tell myself when the thrill of the hunt gets overwhelming.

I got to a few stores in Toronto this afternoon to compare trenches. The raspberry London Fog trench at the Bay is a totally different style and fabric than the black one I got. NOT the same species of coat at all. The one I got is "exclusive to the Bay" and is a more classic cut and style, as well as a more water repellant fabrication. But since I was there, I gamely tried the pink one on, and—honestly, I don't THINK I am imagining this—the sales assistant had to cover a smirk.

And really, I couldn't blame her.

I also looked at the Classic Trench in Banana Republic. As Zapotee reports, it is a lovely coat. And it is also on sale. But it was no better looking on me than the one I bought already, and it was no better made, either. At least as far as I could tell. And, like the one I bought, it is black. So that battle came out a draw.

Then I went to Zara where I found a navy trench. I think it's this one, although here I can't see the gold exposed zipper pockets that were on the one I tried.

I didn't bother taking it to the dressing room; I just put it on over top of my blazer right out there in plain view. And I hadn't even got it completely on, when another customer came by, gave me the once over, and leaned towards me confidentially.

"It doesn't look good," she said.

Wow. I felt like I was channelling Claire on one of her shopping expeditions! Since when do strangers give me unsolicited sartorial advice?

Um...maybe since I started trying on clothes that look so BAD on me?

This coat really did look lousy. It was a really awkward length on me, it didn't layer well over my jacket (even though I sized up), it was uncomfortable, and then I could tell immediately that those groovy zip pockets would drive me nuts. I kept looking for REAL pockets to put my hands into, but these were placed in a way so as to make that impossible.

So I think I'm keeping the black coat.

And if the weather predictions are accurate, I probably won't need a coat at all! Today it was so warm in Toronto that I could have gone out in short sleeves. I was hot in a wool blazer! This is freakish weather.
