I think a trench coat is a great style if you have a small waist, because you can cinch the belt on it to get the fit you want at the waist. I think it could be difficult to alter, if there are a lot of topstitched seams. If the side seams are not topstitched, those could be fairly easy to take in.
I have two very economical trench coats, one a single-breasted style in green by Gallery, and the other a double-breasted, mid-thigh style in taupe by Calvin Klein. I like that they have button-off hoods (I almost always keep the hood on, but I like that I can take them off if I want to) and button- or zip-out linings. They are warm enough for mild winter weather, so I get a lot of good out of a coat like this. My green one is several years old. Eventually I might splurge for a Burberry, but so far, I am not sure I'd want to stick with one style or color that long to make the investment.

I agree with all who said a trench is a versatile, dress up, dress down item. As far as fit, you probably need to try a few on. I'm sure trenches could be altered, depending on how they're made, but I think you could find one that fit off the rack. I have a very old Burberry (25 yrs) that still looks good. If you keep your things and your weight doesn't fluctuate, a Butberry might be worth it for you. Over time, your cost per wearing could be very low. But buy what flatters you and fits your life style!

Has anyone ever had a trench altered? I really like the concepts I am seeing on Nordies with the button-off hood and removable lining, but they look so...sloppy, almost. I have a really small waist and on me I fear they would just look frumpy.

I have a Burberry trench (10 years old) that I wear all the time. Like Crutcher says you can put a trench coat on over anything and look wonderful. I also have lightweight coats (Theory and Michael Kors) that I wear a lot but if I had to pick one it would be the Burberry trench.

I just ordered the London Fog with a removable lining that Angie rec/ in her Nordstrom's spring blog...It got rave reviews...I would like a Burberry but since the LF is more reasonable for me, I will give it a try..A trench can be worn anywhere...over jeans and a tee to run to the store or blush even better over pj's to run for a quick item at the local min-mart...A trench can be worn for dress or for casual and always looks wonderful..
I have read everything I could find before I pushed the button on this coat and I am just so excited over my new purchase...Its from Nordie's of course, black in color, of course... and should be here Tuesday or Wednesday..
Give those Angie previewed a quick look...you may find one that appeals to you...Best...

It depends on your climate, for where I live, they are perfect, even during the winter. Just make sure you choose one not too tight, i like to wear them over a jacket for office or over a knit for weekends

I need a mid/light weight coat for spring and/or autumn. I'm thinking something waterproof (or resistant). I quite like the concept of Burberry's coats with a removable lining and hood, but they are quite pricey.

Do you think those coats with removable hoods & linings are as versatile as I seem to think? Can you recommend other versatile coats? I am not sure what to do.
