Does it come in black? I just couldn't do that shade of beige. I own a tan trenchcoat and the tan color is tricky; I had to ditch others because they made me look like death. Plus I am always afraid of the dreaded "what did I sit on?!" with light fabrics. If it were black, you could dress it up. Heck it could BE a dress.

I am in sticker shock. Beautiful yes...but way too expensive in relationship to my income and needs.

I'd have to agree with Mander and MaryK. I give the "side eye" to claims of silk water resistance (which is different that "waterproof"), and...it is silk and a light color (one of the reasons why I don't invest in white or even tan silk blouses anymore). And I am from the Midwest--weather can be brutal. What if you're caught in a sudden storm? I love the look of this trench and would try to find something similar at a lower price point--perhaps say, around $300 or less, and then get the traditional Burberry trench--which will take you through rain and wet, and keep you dry--and looking smart--for decades.

lyn, I'm dying inside just reading about your classmate. What the heck?!

It's a beautiful trench! And I agree that purchases like this are easier to make before you're married and have children to clothe and feed. You'll have to give some thought to its practicality or lack thereof, and Mander brought up another very good point. How will you react should this baby get damaged by the elements or just everyday life. I know I can't handle handbags that cost thousands of dollars, because I practically flip out anytime the leather gets scratched or wet on one of my bags that cost a few hundred dollars. If you've thought about these things and can't stop thinking about the trench, then go for it for sure!

It's lovely, but if it were me I'd be inclined to look for a more practical option. However, I am very cheap, so the thought of a $40 trench makes me faint, let alone a $1,900 one!

Perhaps there is something in the middle range that would have a similar effect but be less heart-stopping if it were to get damaged?

The runner up: http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/bu.....sultback=0

A more practical but less classic option.

I think it is quite lovely, and some of my classmates have Burberry trenches ... and I'm in the same life stage as you, I think.

If you can afford it, get the trench.

Side note - one of my classmates leaves their Burberry trench crumpled in the lounge all the time. I look at it and die a little inside.

It's pretty but I would imagine you could find a satin or silk trench to give you a similar look for a lot less. I am suspicious of the sales assoc claim that it is water resistant and in the Midwest - doesn't it snow there?

It's gorgeous but about as impractical a purchase as I can imagine. If you're gonna get a Burberry trench, get a real one that will keep you warm and dry!

Ohh, this is the temptation hu!! I would be tempted too.
Honestly people spend their money on different things...things that are important to them and according to what makes them feel good...again if you have the money go for it. I own a Burberry trench, a splurge for sure...would have never done it when I had small children though:)

So, I told myself that I wouldn't buy any clothes (undergarments excluded) in 2011 because I have way to many clothes for my living space (grad student budget). I confess that I made one loophole for this trench....I've been eyeing it since late Autumn. 100% Silk. $1700. But if you wear it a lot (Midwest?), and it's classic and well-made, can this overshadow the steep price tag?

Sometimes I think that as a grad student, now is the time to make quality purchases--often, you're unattached, without kids, car, mortgage, etc.. You can make a purchase in your late 20s/early 30s and then stretch it for decades. It seems like the best time for selecting a few of your best quality items, but I might be biased in my observations. :D

Purchase--yay or nay?
