A few years ago I ordered a couple London Fog trenches (with button out lining, and removable hood) for a trip I was planning. They were very very unflattering. Part of it was me, being overweight, but other part was the fabric was so stiff and bulky. Then I ordered a coat from Eddie Bauer. The design was sleeker, but the fabric made a lot crinkling noises. Later I bought a 3 in 1 coat from Patagonia. It's not trench style, but it was flattering even on me. It's genuinely waterproof. It has a zip out nano puff style coat. The only drawback was it wasn't particularly warm by itself. We were in temps hovering around freezing, damp, snowing/raining, and to stay warm I really had to layer up.

Style Fan - it's exactly as you mentioned, I was hoping a trench would help me dress up my day time looks for Paris! Alas, I had no luck in my mall wanderings this weekend, the London Fog options I found were not flattering, nor the J Crew or BR ones. The hunt goes on...

I love trench coats. The athleta one is cute as a raincoat. Are you wanting the coat as a raincoat or for something warm? I have travelled a lot with my trench coat and it is something that works in lots of places. Especially Paris! I can throw it over jeans and boots and I look dressed.
Mine is a Burberry but there are less expensive ones around. J. Crew and Banana Republic sometimes have them. I like London Fog too.

Oo ClaraT that is cute! I actually quite like that green and will add that to the running! Thanks!

(I also got very distracted by this beauty http://athleta.gap.com/browse/.....45,atprodu)

I find trenches to be bulky for travel--maybe not bulky, exactly, but the tie always seems to be hanging down onto the floor if I"m not wearing it (and sometimes when I am); somehow it is easy to wear but not easy to carry. When I'm going in and out of museums and stores a lot on a trip, I prefer something that is light that scrunches small without wrinkling. I have an earlier version of this rain jacket (http://athleta.gap.com/browse/.....=591159012) from Athleta--it is styled casually on the website, but the fabric is actually dressy-looking. This is a dark color, so I'm not suggesting this one, but maybe something like this that is more stow-able than a traditional trench.

rachylou - I will keep an eye out for ones with removable liners! that's a great idea.

penny - i think the London Fog is my favorite in that round up! I also love the drapey french connection option (pink!!) but wonder if the open drape will give me enough structure, even with the belt.

JAlleen - this is a new brand to me, thank you for the tip! I looooove pockets

If the coat is just for travel, something from Scotte might be nice. I don't have their trench, but I have their vest and it was really handy to have so many pockets to store things securely when we were in Turkey a few years ago.

I'm on the hunt for a trench coat for an upcoming trip - mid April I'm headed to visit a friend in Switzerland, and then I'm off to Paris for a few days and hoping to do some major shopping!

I was originally looking at black or navy options but in my recent efforts to visually lighten-up my wardrobe I'm seeking a lighter option, cream or pale gray maybe.

The Calvin Klein one here is a lovely blush but a no-go: I was swimming in the medium that I ordered, felt bulky (I'm an apple), and didn't love the snap buttons - I'd prefer real ones. I'll mostly be wearing the eccos (or something similar if those don't fit) or short black heeled boots, and I have a navy bag, so I'm not married to any single color.

Anybody have a great trench recommendation? London Fog has done well for me in the past, might try them again. Would love suggestions!
