Angie - I'm an a-typical Seattleite -- I do use an umbrella. I usually carry one with me even when it's not raining "just in case." It's more that I am distracted a bit right now from the trench coat search. I have my comprehensive Ph.D. exams this week and next. So when I start thinking about trench coats over the last week or so, I was actually more focused on final exam preparation. When I didn't immediately find exactly what I wanted, I couldn't really invest the energy to figure out and find what would work. Once my exams are over, I'll give the JS trench another try and check out the Michael Kors. Thanks, Marianne for info on both of them.

I actually ordered the JS coat during NAS but returned it later because it was too lightweight for what I was looking for. The removable lining was just a short "vest". I also agree about cotton-like fabric, but it was very cute.
I saw this one at Nordstrom and it was water-resistant, but also had removable lining, not sure what you think about red, but the color was prettier in person:

So, at the risk of sounding very "un-Seattle" - why don’t you carry an umbrella, aj? None of my trenches are water resistant and I’m always on the streets and I don’t get wet.

It says on the web site that it is water resistant -- but it didn't feel like it was (just heavy cotton fabric) and the salesperson said that it wasn't really a rain coat. It does have a removable lining so should be warm.

wow that is weird that it is not water resistant! what good is a raincoat that is not water resistant? I was thinking of getting it too for Ireland.

Angie said it has to be ordered online so maybe the one you saw AJ is different than her suggestion?

Did it look like it would be warm?

I went to Nordstrom today and looked at the Jessica Simpson trench -- it's not water resistance so won't fit my needs. They only had an XL so I have not idea what the fit would really be like. Apparently the London Fog one that I liked is on "merchandise waitlist" which is apparently even less likely to be available than "back ordered." I might just wait until the spring and hope there are light-weight trenches in lighter colors available then. It will get cold here soon enough and I can wear my lined trench.

I love that Jessica Simpson trench, but thought I'd ask before ordering on line... Any chance that it would work on a tall, fairly busty (34DD) hourglass as well? I've noted Angie's comments about staying away from double breasted lapels and top details for those of us with a larger chest.

Thanks for the comments -- after I posted I realized that I might end up waiting and see what comes out in the spring in lighter colors. In Seattle I do wear raincoats all the time so I want to get something I really love. I'll try the London Fog and see how it fits, though. If I have to I can wear my light weight yellow, too big trench that was a hand-me-down from my sister (see why I want a new one!)

I vote for the London Fog as well. I think it is more polished than the others. I have been wearing my new trench a lot this week since it's been raining and it is a great way to dress up a more casual look. I didn't realize how helpful it could be to have one you feel good in and look good in. So - I guess my advice is only buy one that you feel fab in cuz you will use it a LOT!

I agree with Joy. I wonder about the color of the London fog though. Wouldn't Angie say too blah?

I love the colored Talbots one. Looks cute.

I just bought the Ann Taylor black patent trim lightweight trench. I have long arms like you and it worked. It was $225 though. I like that it can be folded and put in my tote if needed.

The London Fog looks like the most versatile and classic of the group in that it could be dressed up or down. Because the others pictured as so casual, the Talbots would be my second choice, although you'd have to see if that elastic drawstring waist hangs well. I've liked the idea of them giving a waist without messing with a belt, but they never seem to fall quite right on me. All of them look like wonderful coats.

I returned the black Kenneth Cole trench to Macy's. Although it fit well, I took to heart the comments that the stark black overwhelmed me. Macy's didn't have any cream trenches and the one gray trench wasn't a good style for me.

What I really need is a light weight trench that I can wear in early fall -- when it's rainy in Seattle but still fairly warm -- and in the spring. I'd like a color that works for fall and spring -- so black doesn't seem like the best choice. I have an olive lined trench for cold weather.

I've done a bit of searching and here are a few possibilities. I am hoping for closer to or under $100, although that might not be realistic. Some of these have linings so I'm not sure how heavy they are. And ideally I could try them on since I often have the "too short sleeves" problem. Ack, so many variables!
