Thanks for the wise words! I *think* I'm sorted now. Those of you in colder climates need to layer out of necessity. My layering needs aren't as demanding--it's basically a choice between wearing a blazer OR a coat. Lots of times, I can just get by with a blazer (unless it's raining, of course.) I think it makes more sense for me to just figure it's going to be either/or--the blazer or the trench. Thanks for helping me think this through--I appreciate it!

Even though I live in a similar climate to yours, I wanted a trench that would layer over a blazer for when I travel. I took my blazer with me to the store to made sure it fit. It looks a bit blocky this way all done up, but it's better than being cold! I'll wear it plenty with just a blouse or sweater underneath around here. It looks fine that way too.

I have to layer my trench most of the time, too, but it looks best with a lightweight blazer under, that means no tweeds or similar heavy weight wool fabrics.

I sized up on my hooded rain trench and my Banana Republic cream colored trench so that I could fit a blazer underneath. My Burberry, like dakotacheryl's, can only be worn over slim fitting clothing.

My good black trench is a "no belt" style and is easy to layer over a suit, blazer etc., even with the extra lining zipped in. My mom thinks it's too big, but really, it's designed to be able to layer. It fits in the shoulder width and sleeve length just right.

My Burberry London tweed coat can only be worn over a blouse or sweater...

Well, I made sure that my olive Burberry and my brown packable trench could layer over a fleece/fitted leather jacket, but that was mainly in case of theoretical travel needs. I don't think it ever occurred to me to wear a blazer during coat weather before YLF... if it was cold enough to warrant a coat, I'd dress to fit into the coat. But I can definitely see how it would be convenient to be able to wear whatever you wanted in daily life and throw the coat over, too.

Thanks, Fabbers!

@Jjsloane: That’s probably the best solution for me too. I think that the whole coat thing is the main reason I’m not a big blazer wearer even though I love and collect them.

@Suz: I understand why you are in Ceit’s camp--your climate makes an outerwear topper a necessity for a good part of the year!

@DonnaF and Diana: A few of my blazers are doable but I have some with more padding that just look ridiculous. The Nic and Zoe are easy--but the padded ones, not so much!

@sarah: I hope you post your trenches but I totally understand if you don’t have time. I have been reviewing Firecracker’s trench posts and that helped me rule out a few. Nordstrom has a few potentials in petite sizing that I’m thinking about. First, though, I need to post my current trench(s) and see if they really need replacing or not. Hope all is well with you!

I can do it but I am the opposite of IT so I usually have room in the shoulders of my coats. Today I wore my blue trench over my Nic+Zoe blazer, which I have even added shoulder pads to.

I do, which is partly why I've bought and returned more trench coats than I can count. Seriously. I think it's been about 8. I do have an old one and I'm wondering if it's better than I think. Maybe I'll post (but don't hold your breath given how absent I've been around here).

I can, but my blazer isn't too bulky. If I wanted to wear my thick denim jacket underneath (which I think would be a bit weird) then I would just remove this zip in/zip out lining from the trench. I am the opposite of an IT, however, and have a narrow back.

I am with Ceit. All my coats can be layered under. Even my most fitted coat works with a jacket underneath. For my climate it is the only sensible thing.

Kelly I have 2 lightweight trenches (Old Navy canvas with no lining and a navy piped BR one) that I wear over tees and sweaters etc.. ) that I can belt and be streamlined. I sized up on my more substantial lined trench (and other dressy outerwear) that I wear to work so I can wear it over blazers since I wear one almost every day.

Thanks, Unfrumped and Ceit.
@Unfrumped: I think IT might make it more difficult for sure. I think the best solution is probably to have two different fits. That's kind of what I'm looking at right now although I don't know if I would ever really layer over a blazer on a typical day. If it is raining and I need to wear the water proof trench, I usually plan on wearing a sweater.
@Ceit: I think I have a problem with outerwear in general. Let's hope I never move to a less forgiving climate. I don't know what I would do. Thanks for chiming in!

Mine that I wore today does fit over my blazers. Otherwise for me, a jacket or coat for outerwear is kind of useless. It's a trade off to a very fitted coat, but as I said, I need mine to be outerwear over my outfit for inside.

I wonder if it's harder to do that for IT's? Or the opposite? Tailoring might be needed if you have your heart set on certain coats, or keep looking for the one that "gets you". Tailoring through the waist and body ought to be a little easier than tailoring the shoulders, though.

I've given myself permission to have layering and not-layering-as well trench fits . But so far that's been with modestly priced coats. And especially for one that's not long. For those going the Burberry route, it can cause a quandary about one size up or down giving different looks.

Do you layer your trench coat over blazers? I tried mine on over a blazer and while it fits, it doesn't look very streamlined. Curious to know what Fabbers do. TIA.
