Thanks, Mander! I actually have a pair similar to what you are suggesting and I think that's what I'm going to try. It will be easy to remove the warm socks once I get to my location and I can wear ankle socks, as you suggest, during the vacation if I like. Thanks, again!

What about slip on canvas loafers or converse-type sneakers with warm socks? You can wear them with ankle socks on your vacation but they will be sturdy and warm enough for a ten minute walk plus wandering in the airport.

Kim - great suggestion about carrying flip flops in my purse. I will definitely consider this if I decide to wear boots!

Debora - Kim is right! You have the best idea! :)

Claire - Boots/booties that are easy to get off while going through security is an excellent point I hadn't even thought of. Great suggestion, as well as the layers with the sleeveless top! Good one.

Angie - thank you!

Gaylene - thanks for outlining your process. You have really given me food for thought and I'm so glad I put this question out to the forum!

Thanks to everyone for their ideas! Much appreciated!

I have a pair of light-weight leather sneakers that I wear with a pair of wool socks. On the way to the airport, I wear silk long-johns under a pair of light weight summer pants and layer a silk cami, a shirt, a light-weight fleece, and a lightweight shell. Once inside the terminal, I strip off the fleece and stuff it in one of my bag pockets where it resides for the rest of the trip. Once we get on the plane, I duck into the washroom, remove the long-johns and then settle in for the trip. At the destination, I take off the wool socks so I am just wearing my summer pants, cami, and an open shirt with bare feet in my sneakers. On the return trip, I just reverse the pattern.

The only "extras" in my luggage are my wool socks, silk long-johns, and light fleece because I use the leather sneakers as a walking shoe while on vacation. Those three extra items, however, come in very handy at the start and end of the trip.

I was going to suggest a pair of boots/booties as well, that are easy to get off and on at security. If you have some that are a color or not black, that's a bonus. You will probably be comfortable in them right up until you deplane, and if you're like Angie, and run cold, you might even be able to leave them on until you get to the resort! Maybe you can wear a sleeveless top underneath your layers that you can strip down to when you land.

Your vacation sounds wonderful! Have a great time!

Wear your boots on the plane to keep your feet warm throughout the flight and then slip into a pair of sandals upon landing.

Or, you could do what spoiled me would be so sorely tempted to do. Have hubby drop you and all the luggage off at the terminal. He can park the car while you wait in the toasty terminal and watch over the luggage!

Have a wonderful trip!

I think this would be a really good time to wear your boots to the airport and carry flip flops in your purse or carry on. (Bring an extra reusable bag inside your carry on for your boots when you get off the plane.) I'd actually change *on* the plane and put my flip flops on just as we were landing. My feet don't like the cold at all, and the planes tend to run cold.

And I'm jealous! Right now I'm looking at 15cm of snow and a blizzard outside my window. Swim up to the bar and have one for us northerners! LOL

These are such great ideas, ladies! Thank you!

Diana and Anna - I am afraid to admit that the only athletic activity I might be aiming for on this trip is the swimming to the swim-up bar and the arm curls that will come afterward when I have a summery drink on hand! However, your point about efficiency and packing is well taken and usually is my approach as well - heavy footwear worn on the plane to avoid packing it. I will look ahead at the weather when it gets closer - I just may have to wear hiking boots or running shoes to travel in.

Suz and Joy - I would never have even thought of wearing something OVER my shoes. What a fantastic idea and very clever given how short the actual walk will be. If I do this, I promise you I will take a picture of my feet AND the look on my husband's face when he sees me doing this in the parking lot! ;)

Karie - I will look into the foldup boot option from Totes. Thank you!

Does Totes still make a fold up boot? You might try something like that. I am traveling south later this winter myself, and would love to hear more about your travel capsule!

I like slip on athletic flats with those footie things that don't show when travelling by plane since one has to take off their shoes and get them back on, sometimes very quickly. Could you wear a large pair of old socks (and maybe Suz's plastic bags too) over your feet and shoes for the walk to the airport? Funny looking but keeping you warm and dry.

I agree with Diana. I always wear my hiking shoes on a plane because they take up so much space. Otherwise I have a dedicated travel outfit, because I figure I'll be coming home in the cold too.

Shoes with plastic bags on top? (Sounds crazy, but hey....)

Neither of these is what you would call high fashion. But hey, maybe you can start a trend?

Are you bringing any gear shoes? Like sneakers for working out, hiking, etc? I think I'd probably just wear those for the snowy walk, then swap shoes if you want once you get inside. I'm not usually a fan of gear shoes for non-gear purposes but I think traveling is an exception to the rule, because frankly for me traveling lightly and efficiently trumps all.

Hello everyone,

I hope this message finds everyone rested and rejuvenated from the past few days of holidays!

My husband and I will be travelling South this winter for a week to an all-inclusive resort. I think I've got my travel capsule figured out (all credits to YLF for that!) but I am really stumped on what to wear on the plane as far as footwear goes. We will be driving to the airport and thus will be parking in the long-term parking lot, which happens to be an outdoor lot. We will have a 10 minute walk to the airport, but after that, we'll be inside and will land in a location, 5.5 hours later, that has an average temperature of 30 degrees Celsius.

The walk to the airport is almost guaranteed to be in snow and to be very cold, but I don't want to wear boots because they will not be helpful once we land in our destination. So my only option is shoes? But what kind?

Any advice is welcome. Thanks in advance!
