We just got back from a birding trip to SE Arizona. We had a group of eight people, including our guide, all vaccinated. At our B&B, they were vaccinated/had recovered from Covid. Not ideal. Anyway, the eight of us became a pod and wore masks if we entered a business, such as to use a restroom, or get ice cream. Otherwise, we didn’t, and spent long days hopping in and out of a van and hiking. For our plane rides, my husband and I wore our KN95 masks.

Yes agreed Synne although I hope to travel again internationally in the future, especially in retirement, I’m also grateful that I travelled as much as I did as a young person and am ok with staying put for the foreseeable future. I do have more idle interest in Canadian road trips than I have in the past, maybe next summer we’ll go to Quebec or even the East Coast. It does certainly help that we have our cottage property in an area that always offers more to discover in terms of new-to-us hiking trails etc, plus new experiences of familiar places (such as a boat tour we did that explored the national park from the shore). This is definitely a much appreciated privilege right now.

If anyone somewhat local is interested the Netflix show ‘Motel Makeover’, featuring the hipsterfication of an old Knights Inn in our cottage’s nearby beach town is now streaming. So far it’s light verging on boring

I have read the difference between N95 and KN95 is the governing body (USA/China). And that the difference between N95 industrial and medical is testing for fluids protection.

Yes indeed at more mandates and harsher lockdowns. They are coming for sure.
I am happy I traveled the world in my younger days. I traveled far more than my ancestors combined, I believe.

anchie The inconsistency you describe drives me crazy. And it’s just so wrong that caregivers to the medically fragile are not required to be vaccinated or wear masks. We have the same problem here in the U.S., although I am hopeful more mandates will change that.

We travelled to see my parents in Croatia first time since January 2020. It is 6 hour car drive. We travelled through Hungary and only thing that was different in Hungary was that all rest stops, petrol stations and restaurants along the highway were marked for transit and for non-transit, so we could only use those marked for transit. On border crossing to Croatia we had to show vaccination or test certificate to be able to enter, but once in Croatia, I haven't seen almost any restrictions. I only saw masks worn inside the stores, often tucked under the chin, or nose sticking out. Croatia does not have a very high vaccination rate, only about 40%. Lot of antivaxxers, unfortunately many of my high school friends and some family members are in that camp and I did not have energy or inclination to meet with them while there.

My parents health deteriorated a lot over the last 18 months and now they depend on a lot of people that they see on daily basis - nurse, physical therapist, cleaning lady, driver, gardener, food delivery guys, neighbors... I was upset to see that non of them wear a mask when in contact with my fragile parents. I tried objecting but got answers along the line that my parents are vaccinated or that they are vaccinated. There were only handful of active cases in the region at the time so I felt like crazy person insisting on masks, while everyone else was behaving like everything is back to normal. On the way home there were again checks of vaccination or test status on border crossing to Austria even though there are no borders within EU. At the moment I don't have any plans for travelling, school has started today and I am back in the office.

we flew from ohio to FLA in late June. all masked up at airport and on plane.
FLA was a different story. no masks at all!!! anywhere!

also had orientation at an ohio college mid-tune - hotel there were some masks - not many - at orientation - same thing - hardly any masks at all.

move in to college this past weekend - said masks mandated - but saw less than 10% parents/kids with masks. we did stay in a Hampton Inn and they were asking guests to put on a mask (we had ours on).

Wow all this sounds like last year in the US. Where I am the cases are quite low, and about half the people wear masks. I stopped for about a month or 2 but restarted. I've worked a couple big outdoor festivals, but not planning more now.
When I drove to dads in FL in Feb, I didn't go in anywhere I didn't have to. I wasn't about to get on a plane! Masks with 2 filters in, and I changed gloves at each bathroom break. I wasn't around anyone but dad and his doctors/home health. But that was before I got my vaccine.

I'm late to this thread but I will chime in: We flew from Burbank Airport to Seattle Iceland in early July (first flight in two years) and it was pretty normal. Iceland is, of course, an island and has high vaccination rates and low infection rates, and all visitors were required to be vaccinated. So it seemed quite normal -- no masks or social distancing to speak of. (I understand that may have changed recently as infection rates have increased due to Delta.) Iceland was amazing, BTW -- HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Later in July we flew to Oregon and again, pretty normal. I will say Los Angeles International Airport seemed MUCH MUCH less crowded than usual. Car rental prices in Oregon were shockingly high but fortunately we were able to get a good deal through a connection of a friend of a friend. Once there we had a bit of a challenge getting into restaurants (with a group of friends ranging from 4 to 10 people) because apparently they were short staffed, but nothing major.

Last year we booked a trip to Croatia for next month, but with the rise in Delta and the general uncertainty, we canceled it last month and I feel like that was the right move. We have three trips planned for next year, the first a barge trip from Bruges to Amsterdam in May, and hopefully they will happen as planned.

What an interesting thread. NZers here are starting to chafe at our restrictions when to their perception the world is opening up. I don't think they realise how hard it still is to move around, let alone have the wonder of travel.

So they *are* different things! Thanks for posting that, Runcarla. The abbreviation commonly used here is FFP2, which supposedly is another term for KN-95. It might be close enough for day to day, but I appreciate you pointing out the differences. This is how they parse the different mask types over here (site has English pages, but I can’t find this doc on them; most phones can quickly translate a website. On Safari on an iphone, you click to the left of the url field at the top of the screen, and then on the “AA” to select translations. Idk how it works elsewhere, but assume it being a competitive market means they all must have it) https://www.bfarm.de/SharedDoc.....asken.html

ETA reading through this, they refer to KN-95/N-95 and FFP2 standards jointly. Makes me think they aren’t considered different things here.

My understanding is that N95’s are intended for health care workers and not commonly available over the counter. KN95’s aren’t the same thing, though they look similar. Below is the CDC info on masks.

https://www.cdc.gov/coronaviru.....masks.html

I’m sure folks are trying to access and use the best face coverings they have access to.

Runcarla, I purchased N95’s from Project N95, which was originally set up to sell to healthcare workers when N95’s were in short supply. Fit testing is done at my annual health assessment for my hospital privileges, at the health staff health clinic. Guessing at N95 fit can be tough, because there are so many styles…duckbill, cup, folding, etc. For work, I ended up purchasing an envo mask, which has an elastomeric seal and re-usable/replaceable filters. I use a surgical mask over the top and switch it between patients. I also purchased the valveless frame. N95’s are pricey, so if they are required for your sons work, I would hope they provide them and also do the fit testing. The envo mask is also pricey, but in the end, costs me about the same as the N95’s and creates less waste. For travel on an airplane, I would wear my Envo mask plus a surgical mask.

DH and I have been taking small trips and we have gone to some museums in cities within driving distance. Appointments were needed as were masks, but once inside, the museums were quiet, and very pleasant. We postponed a planned trip to Portland Oregon because DD told us the heat plus air quality from forest fires would result in more need for indoor activities at a time when their COVID rates were rising and hospital beds almost full.

We went to western Michigan in July through early August, to the town where my husband’s family has a summer house. Most activities were outdoors, we mostly ate at the house, everyone was vaxxed in the house, etc. The people in town mostly didn’t mask, but delta was only just becoming prominent when we arrived, and the town had almost no cases the whole time we were there. The dicey part was flying to and from there, but we seem to have emerged unscathed.

We are going to Greece next month, which we booked with airline credit when things looked good. I carefully chose a one-country trip that could be almost all outdoors. We won’t party or eat indoors, and will double mask or wear KN-95’s when needed. I considered canceling due to the non-zero change of being quarantined instead of being allowed to go home on time, but the trip is too difficult to cancel for various reasons. We are reluctantly bringing our work laptops along, in case we are stranded there but only mildly ill.

I’m not too concerned about getting ill, as I believe it would be mild. Quarantine would be a nuisance but survivable. I don’t have any young children or vulnerable adults living with me, so there are no worries about spreading it to anyone who is at risk. I can just stay home a few days after I arrive back, and retest to make sure I didn’t get COVID on the way home. Honestly, going to Florida seems riskier now, but I wouldn’t have to test to come home from there!

The rates where I am going in Greece are not worse than those in my own zip code, which has one of the lowest vax rates in NYC (for complex historical and socioeconomic reasons). Masking is good in stores here, but less so on the subway. We were eating inside for a while but will avoid it now, even with the vaccine mandate, just to be sure we don’t test positive before we leave. Overall, though, I figure that I’m probably not much more at risk if I just go to Greece. I could get covid in the subway! May as well hit the beach….

We haven’t travel since the start of pandemic. My son and DIL moved back to Ontario from Vancouver last October before the third wave hit us. They tested before and after the flight and wore masks. They stay in town for a couple of days but not in our house, booked themselves into a hotel. Soon after we all went in a full lockdown. Although they were only 2 hours away, we were unable to see them for a few months.
We are now all fully vaccinated and kids are moving to Toronto in October. No travel plans for us for now.

S. Fash yes that’s the plan. The area recently reimposed an indoor mask mandate but we would’ve worn them anyway. The problem with vacation spots is that there are travelers from all over (duh) so local vax rates don’t mean that much IMO.

I'm in New Mexico and we drove to Puerto Penasco, Mexico in July. It's a 12 hour drive with my 3 kids, although Google says it takes 10 hours. We rented a beach house and didn't go anywhere except the grocery store. They had strict mask mandates, capacity limits, and were checking temperatures. The worst part was having to stop in Arizona for food and gas. No one there wore a mask and everywhere seemed crowded. We met several other members of my extended family and everyone was vaccinated except the young kids (one of my sons is only 7 so can't be vaccinated yet).

I have not traveled by air since Feb 2020, though my brother (in PA) and sister (in KY) and their families have chosen to fly throughout the last 18 months. With my job in sales, and our love of travel, I was the family's biggest traveler pre-pandemic.

My sons have both flown short flights this summer - Boston to DC (to visit us), Boston to Charleston SC (for work).

We have driven DC to Boston, DC to Pittsburgh numerous times. We stay exclusively in Marriotts, and I've been comfortable even since early in the pandemic with their approach -masking, family only on an elevator, plexiglass in the lobby, stripped down rooms, no in-room service, no breakfast - as described by many above. We often bring anti-bacterial spray and hit all of the surfaces in the hotel room upon arrival. Been a little less stringent about that in recent months and need to ramp back up. Good practice anyway. Pre-vaccine I tested before and after trips. From April until now, I haven't tested, but will do again if we take any trips in the next months.

I've found the most challenging things on our driving trips to be meals, and boredom. If we're in a Residence Inn, we shop at a local grocery store and have at least basics handy, but dinner has been various takeout, etc., not enjoyable. And, visiting cities was always museums, shows, movies, seeing friends - and most of that is curtailed or cancelled, or not comfortable especially with Delta rising.

We rented a wonderful VRBO home in rural southern VT last October - that was our best getaway. I have made and cancelled a trip to Arizona for late Sept. In Jan I bought tickets to Israel for November, in huge hopes we would make the trip, but it's looking very unlikely we will go.

Cancelled attendance at a family reunion held last weekend, particularly because of learning that one of my cousins is an unapologetic antivaxxer, and many others are politically on the other side of the science. Wisely my 91 year old father also chose to stay home, but my mother did not. And I am sure that hugging, indoor visiting, and sharing of food went on.

All travel, especially air, is risk to be weighed.

My area of Maryland is very compliant with masking and other CDC advice, so on a daily basis I feel ok in our community. However - in general -I'm feeling more down and discouraged lately than since the very early days of the first lock down.

I really have not been anywhere since December of 2019. Young adult kids (still at home with us, working remotely) have traveled a bit, carefully, masked, once fully-vaxxed….one to visit his girlfriend across the country (who also moved home when COVID hit). Another son traveled to a wedding also via plane (24 hours total) where all guests had to be vaxxed. Both sons got tested afterwards to make their mother feel better.

But back in June, pre-Delta, we decided to book a beach week within driving distance for the end of August. And now I am stressed since numbers are rising. DH points out we stay outdoors most of the time, the hotel is big and sprawling with outdoor entrances to the rooms, and outdoor dining/takeout options are plentiful. So we will likely proceed because, well, Carpe Diem and all that…

I have only been a couple of times by car to visit my in laws - both have been hospitalized at different times. Otherwise, I have not been anywhere. DH has made a handful of work trips (by car) and the kids are back in school, in person for full day.

For the n95 masks, we had luck getting a box of them from a big office supply place (u-line) during the lull (shortly before Delta). We wore them for extra protection around my in-laws to try to minimize exposure.

I flew home in late July to visit my parents for my mother's knee surgery. Cases were starting to rise but not too bad yet. I wore an N95 on the plane (with no valve). I didn't do any special fit testing, but with the headstrap it seals much better than even my comfortable earloop KN95s. I've used N95s in my metal shop for years; without one, I feel ill for days from the noxious crud in the air, but I'm fine with a mask. So I know they work really well.

My flights were both full but late at night, so very little talking or eating, which made it a bit safer. The person coughing one row back did make me nervous though!

My parents' town in rural New England was very relaxed, with low cases, so it felt like a vacation to normal life: neighbors stopped by for a drink on the screen porch, etc. I've been more restrictive than that in my normal life, living in a dense urban area.

I have access to weekly testing through work so I tested before and after, and because I'm paranoid, also used a few of those Binax at-home instant tests in between.

Since then, we've had quite a few vaccinated breakthrough cases in my lab building at work, mostly asymptomatic but still spreading, so I'm still trying to figure out the new reality. I'll be teaching in person starting this week (vaccines and masks required for all)... The vaccines really do protect wonderfully against the worst outcomes but the amount of stealth Delta variant lurking out there is unsettling.

We traveled by car from Central IL to Boulder CO area in late March after we were vaccinated, to visit family. We stayed in motel one night each way, with family while in CO. While there, we only did outside (snow hiking and sledding) activities other than stay in to make puzzles and build Lego. No restaurant meals; we even packed our own food for traveling. What impressed me at the time was how little traffic was on the roads.

In mid June, we went to Paducah KY for a couple days. Lots more traffic, just as few people. We walked and ate outside most of the time, but in the quilt museum wore masks. That was a more comfortable time. We had hopes of going with friends to Nashville or Door County WI by this time of summer. Didn’t happen.

Now, we have no plans to travel and won’t make any. I’d love to take the train to CO as I have a few times, but I won’t. We’re not big travelers anyway, but it feels dangerous again to think of going as far as CO. I see Jesse Jackson and his wife, both vaccinated in February, are hospitalized for COVID.

Sal, I hadn’t heard of MIQ. The Google says it’s a system of accommodations and testing that everyone traveling to New Zealand is required to use for 2 weeks. Wow! No wonder your numbers have been low.

We had to present negative test results and were supposed to quarantine when we went to the US—we stayed in our hotel room and worked in the storage locker most of our first week, and were with family, not out & about, the second.

Returning home, we were supposed to quarantine for 2 weeks, unless we did a test after 5 days. We planned to do the test, but then realized that even if we did, we didn’t have anywhere to go, so we skipped it. Traveling in March, a year into the pandemic, countries still each had their separate procedures for entering, each requiring a test.

Planning for our trip next month, those things seem to have settled into more of a routine. Vaccines have become much more widely available in the meantime, so we’ll need to show that we’ve had them done.

I will soon post about our harrowing (in my mind) but actually fun trip to NY and back (from Israel). We had deliberated until the last moment about going, although my entire family is fully vaccinated, because news of Delta was already big here in Israel and we saw it rising quickly in the US.

Wearing a mask for almost 24 hours straight (taxi+airport+12 hour flight+airport to rent a car) is not fun but not nearly as bad as I had feared. We had strict rules about time in stores, only ate in outdoor seating of restaurants (NYC had transformed into an outdoor seating paradise) and generally took as many precautions as possible. We ended up cancelling the Florida leg of our trip (thankfully my sister came to meet us in NJ), cancelling a weekend at our niece and nephew (some of their 7 kids are too young to be vaccinated), not doing many of the things we normally do, but did get to visit with my 90 year vaccinated MIL (we took a covid test before and after the plane), see bunches of nieces/nephews/cousins at an outdoor reunion, spend a few days in the Poconos and other fun stuff.

Right now we are in isolation for a week (a price we anticipated paying) but tested negative in the airport and if we are still negative Weds. will be sprung. Glad to be home and will answer any questions!

My only travel has been within NZ and mostly without restrictions. Masks are needed on buses trains and aircraft. At level 2 there are restrictions on numbers dining, serving etc. we have been very fortunate (we have levels from 1 (almost no restrictions) to 4 (lockdown and only essential services open - supermarket, pharmacy and corner stores, no online shopping, no going to work unless essential)

Leaving NZ is easy but I couldn’t get back in without a booking into MIQ which is an impossible position to be in. For a few months Australia was an option or Rarotonga. But right now I am restricted to my neighbourhood and work. For how long I don’t know.

I have been lucky to enjoy a city break, some beach breaks, and a longer holiday to the South Island. This time next week we have a family reunion planned but it looks very very unlikely.
