Thanks Laurie - further update - my Dad did the 4wd motorbike tour anyway. Apparently he was fine and taken on advanced tracks. He phoned my sister afterwards……

Thank you for updating! This is very uplifting and I'm so glad that your Dad's trip is going great. He IS lucky to be so fit, and he is also SMART to take advantage of being healthy to continue to have adventures. He is also very lucky to have such a supportive daughter who worrries, but encourages.

Duly inspired!

Dad is currently in Alaska about to head off to Denali National Park for three nights. He is off on a scenic flight up there - he wanted to do a 4WD self drive trip but I vetoed that one…..I don’t think they are designed for 84 year olds.

He has had a ball - loved the Canadian Rockies, the farm hospitality in Alberta and the beauty of Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island. He enjoyed the Stampede show at night, not the day as much. I have only had emails from the cruise but he is well and finding it fun.

I am quite envious as I am at home working in winter. We have actually moved into his townhouse in the retirement village whilst he is away as our house is being painted and it seemed an easy option.

Weather was amazing in Canada - think it’s been cooler on the cruise but still good.

He is very lucky to be so fit at 84.

This sounds like a fantastic trip ... I think he's going to love it! BC is so beautiful. My mom did a similar trip; mind you she was younger than your dad but did go with an older sister. They did Calgary to Vancouver and then the Alaskan cruise. They absolutely loved it, with the Rockies, Lake Louise, etc. being the highlights.

Wishing him a wonderful adventure! And to your question, I've no doubt he will be welcomed with open arms everywhere he goes. I agree with Suz that he will want to be ready for a wide range of weather conditions - from dry heat to damp cool! Layers ftw!

That’s very hard Joy - very sad.

Yes there is COVID around and that does make me nervous. He will dress warm and I will encourage a mask on the plane.

He has now booked and paid. He is pretty funny to be honest as this time last week Canada was not on the horizon! And he’s going to Alaska too.

He’s a good client to the travel agent!

DH and I both recently had Covid although both fully vaccinated . My BIL recently died in a hospital of Covid though fullly vaccinated. We went to the funeral in Illinois. And caught it there. We have just this week tested negative and gone out again. He should take warm clothes for the trip.. if he wears warm things and a mask he should be fine.

Thanks all - great to have some feedback from people closer at hand. He will definitely get travel insurance and he has all the vaccinations for influenza and COVID.

Much appreciated - it’s good to get a range of perspectives. Dad copes well on the heat - we are used to the damp and wind and rain - but not the extreme cold which he should avoid in July.

He is mostly very fit and active -he did a few flights by himself last year and managed. We did the train together then he went on a tour and had several days alone where he explored Perth and Darwin.

There is some risk -my Mum broke a hip travelling and ended up in hospital in Wales for two weeks so I know how wrong things can go. Dad seems very keen so I don’t want to put him off.

Oh, he will be fine on a tour, for sure! And he'll enjoy it. He'll meet fun people. The sights really are incomparable and he'll be getting a lot of variety with this mix. As long as he's prepared for health emergencies and has comfy footwear -- oh -- and as long as he dresses for the weather! -- he'll have a fantastic time.

Some thoughts on dressing -- a lightweight packable puffer will be most welcome on the cruise and in the mountains. He might not need it (July could be hot) but then again, he might, especially in the evenings and especially on the ship.

Good rain gear for the cruise. If he's lucky it will be sunny but typically there is some cloud and rain on the boat.

A good hat of some kind, especially if he wears glasses. Both against sun and rain.

As a New Zealander, he is probably used to a more humid climate than he will find in the mountains. He might find that in Alberta he needs to hydrate a lot more (perhaps similar to trips ot Australia, despite lower temps in Alberta) and also he might need a richer moisturizer for his skin. I know a lot of men don't like to use that kind of stuff, but you might just mention it. Of course the humidity levels in Vancouver and on the cruise will be more familiar.

He will need to be aware that he might get altitude sickness as well. People often discount it as a risk at Banff because the elevations are only borderline high enough -- but I have seen people succumb multiple times and most people need a day or so to fully acclimatize. I think since he is on a tour they will cover the risk and mention some simple precautions. Good hydration is key.

The west coast is casual, for the most part, so he won't feel out of place in gear-ish clothing if he is comfortable wearing it.

It’s with a tour group. So he won’t be driving and will have company and an itinerary. I am pretty sure he is going - July - after a trip in NZ and before his trip to Tasmania. And after he walks the runway as a fundraiser and collects his outdoor bowling cup.

This brings a smile to my face! My own fit adventurous 80 year old dad is in Cuba currently, but is apparently talking about not renewing his passport when it expires, which made me sad to hear (I’m not sure when it expires and I do understand the impulse to prepare in advance for limitations that may be in his future).
It sounds like a lovely trip. My in-laws have done the Alaska cruise twice and loved it. The Rockies are stunning. He might be interested in checking out the Rocky Mountaineer site even if the prices put it in fantasy land: https://www.rockymountaineer.com/package-search

AMAZING!

Will Dad be doing this trip alone, Sal?

April raises very good points about securing good healthcare abroad.

We have an idyllic view of the cruise ships that head out to Alaska from our loft! Summer is DEFINITELY the best time to go. But the window of cruises is typically May to Oct.

How wonderful!

April raises some good thoughts. Covid is still around, after all, and even though a lot of these activities are outdoors, there is always a risk, especially in crowds. Alberta really is Canada's wild west (no offence to Albertans, but...) so in certain situations, vaccination rates might be lower and therefore more transmission of illness.

Cruises are still notorious hotbeds for the virus. A very fit friend in his 70s recently came back from an Antarctic cruise. Both he and his wife were very sick during the cruise (Covid). They still managed to have a great time overall.

Having made all those noises, I will add, summer is typically better, so if he is coming then, less to worry about.

Is he planning to tour with a group on a bus or is he driving on his own? The Rockies are well worth the trip -- Lake Louise is touristy now but still beautiful. That cruise up to Alaska is very well regarded. My cousin did it last year and had a wonderful trip. My brother has also done it and enjoyed it greatly, even though he is not a cruise type person.

You wouldn't catch me dead at the Stampede. But I'm not your dad! :)

Sounds like quite a guy.

My only suggestion would be for him to think about a couple of "what-ifs". Fit, active, and healthy are wonderful traits. A few minutes thought to questions like "What's my plan if I need medical care in a different country", followed by writing down the answers and both packing a copy and giving one to any trusted loved-one who might be called upon to help from afar, seems like a good use of time.

Otherwise, Godspeed, Sal's Dad!

My adventurous Dad is considering a trip-

— Fly NZ to Vancouver
- Fly Vancouver to Calgary
- two week farm and sightseeing trip to Lake Louise, Banff and see the Stampede
- three days back in Vancouver
- cruise up the coast to Alaska

Any thoughts on this trip for a fit active 84 year old - he’s travelled broadly to Europe, Asia including Russia- but not to Canada before.

Thanks in advance!
