Gaylene, thanks for the hotel recommendation: I will definitely check it out.
Kiwi, this is interesting. As I am from former Soviet Union myself I had enough of that exotic in my life I will keep the Old Jewish Cemetery in mind!

I had a wonderful 10 days in Prague back in 1993!!

We went to Brno, Prague, Cesky Budevocic, and Cesky Krumlov.

Brno at the time was very Eastern Block - lots of grey concrete apartment blocks and not much to buy. It was not picturesque but memorable. The other places all had their highlights, from buses breaking down, to staying in faded grand hotels, to going to the opera in Prague, to discovering the wonderful Czech Beer (I was 23 :)) I had a fabulous time.

My recommendations are so out of date of course but I remember visiting the Old Jewish Cemetary vividly.

Sveta, if you are searching for a place to stay in Prague, I'd highly recommend this small family hotel in the Mala Strana:
http://www.dumuvelkeboty.cz

Jan, his wife, and his sons played a huge part in making our stay in Prague so enjoyable. Their home is just across from the German Embassy in a quieter part of the quarter and their hospitality was truly outstanding. They deserve every rave review they get, and then some. Highly recommended!

I have not been to the Czech Republic but we really like Rick Steves guides as a starting point. His recommendations have always worked well for us.
Google Rick Steves Czech Republic. It looks like there are guides for Prague and for beyond Prague. Have a wonderful time!

Prague is a lovely city, especially if you spend time in some of its less touristy streets and neighbourhoods and stay long enough to attend a few concerts and theatre productions. My sister and I spent a over a month in the Czech Republic and Slovakia a few years ago going as far east as Kosice. We loved both countries and we treated with great hospitality and consideration for our entire stay. All together, we spent 10 days in Prague and barely scratched the surface of all that we wanted to see or do.

My Prague highlights were the library of Strahov Monastery, the Castle Gardens (talked to one of the gardeners), the National Gallery, attending a production at the National Theatre, an insider "tour" of Wenceslas Square provided by a man who had participated in the Velvet demonstrations (he and his wife were seated at the next table and had overheard my sister and I talking), the Convent of St. Agnes (quiet and almost deserted so we had lots of time to talk to the curators and staff), and last, but not least, just walking around the narrow back streets and into the corners where most tourists didn't venture. Much like Paris or London, there is such a wealth of history and culture associated with the city, it is easy to feel overwhelmed if you move at too fast a pace.

The must-see sights and famous" streets and squares can be quite busy with tourists, especially in the summer or on UK bank holidays (we got a good tip from a local person to visit the Castle just a few hours before closing instead of during the daytime because the crowds and tour groups can be quite overwhelming) so we tried to go against the tide as much as possible.

We found, in the quieter areas, people were very helpful in directing us to smaller cafes and bars for lunch and dinner As a result we ate very well at a very reasonable price although I suspect many tourists might have a different experience if they chose places on the main tourist strip. Prague is a favorite destination in the UK for stag and hen parties because of the cheap flights so there are lots of bars and restaurants that cater to that crowd.

Hi Sveta,
I've been there twice, both times on shopping trips when I lived overseas. A girlfriend and I took two bus tours to Prague and Karlovy Vary to sightsee and shop. There are some great deals to be found on porcelain and Bohemian crystal. I bought a full set of Blue Onion porcelain, and my friend bought a crystal chandelier. Thankfully there was plenty of room under the bus for all our purchases. You can also find great deals on garnets. I brought back a lovely garnet ring for DD from one of my trips.

It's been years since I was there, but Prague is a beautiful city with lots to do. Karlovy Vary, a spa town with hot springs and its Grandhotel Pupp reported helped inspire Wes Anderson's Grand Budapest Hotel.

I'll be following this thread with interest. Good luck and happy planning!

Sveta, I have only been to Prague once (layover on the way to Israel) so cannot recommend much. I however know that outside of Prague, one of the popular attractions is Cesky Krumlov.
Also, you won't be too far from Dresden and Vienna, so it's something to consider.

My hubby and I are travelling to Czech Republic for 12 days in early October. I am planning the trip now and would like to tap into collective YLF experience for some help.
Does anybody have been there? Any favorite places you want to share?
There is Prague of course but anything else? I am looking online and through the guide books but would appreciate any real life advice I can get here.

Thank in advance!
