The three shoes did work out. I missed the sneakers but didn’t need them, and the ballet flats were only worn twice - but they were so small and light to pack that I was glad to have them anyway. The hiking boots are new but ended up comfortable enough that I had very little foot pain. Also, they look like hi tops so I didn’t mind wearing them most days. It ended up being hot after the first day or so in Santiago, too.

We did go to one restaurant that we dressed up for. We needn’t have done so, though it was fancier than other places we had been, but it made a nice change. I was glad to have the ballet flats for that.

Overall, the trip was great, except that I got a cold after three days in the desert, and it lasted most of the rest of the time. I had fun anyway but we skipped one of our more strenuous planned excursions from Santiago as a result.

I am a little late to this thread, but glad you kept the Birkenstocks. I was in Singapore and Kuching (Malaysian Borneo) recently, and while temps were very warm, the Birkenstock Arizona sandal in silver were my "dressy enough" shoe option and it worked out well. I think 3-4 pairs of shoes is about right when you're traveling and need to accommodate different climates, temperatures, and occasions.

Hope you're having a wonderful time.

3 pr for 10 days sounds like a lot to me, especially if you know you won’t be going anywhere dressy. I agree with advice above not to take any new shoes. If your feet are fussy, that goes double. Why not do Birks + socks if it’s chilly?

Update on this, since I’m on my way!

I ended up having to check a bag. My husband’s bag is slightly too big for carry on, since this international airline is not generous with its restrictions. (It made a good carry on before things tightened up.) He has a smaller bag but needs too much gear for the wide variety of temps we will encounter. So if he checks his, I may as well check mine, though I hate to do it. I’m not using a bigger bag, since I didn’t want to lug around more. We will likely buy wine and have to check bags on the way back too. I mind less then.

I almost kept in a fourth shoe in a panic, but I am wearing my hiking boots and bringing my Birkenstocks. I decided sneakers were redundant after all, since my boots are light and look like hi tops (as suggested above). The Birkenstocks will give me the break my feet will need. I also snuck in the flat pair of metallic blue ballet flats that pack flat. I can probably wear them at night when it cools, if I don’t have to walk too far. I had to carry the triclimate coat, since it’s 73 in NYC today :p

I did sneak in my utility jacket! I won’t want my triclimate jacket in the evenings in the city, but I could have used it if I didn’t care about blending in.

Sal, we plan to do a few day trips (definitely Valparaiso), but I'll keep these ideas in mind. We'd love to see a bit of the Andes and also wine country, but our time is limited (5 nights in Santiago) so we'll see what we feel like doing on the ground.

dakotacheryl, good to know. I love mine. Our late summer was a bit cool, so I have worn them a lot.

Muffin, I thought I had it sorted, but looking at the forecast today, Santiago doesn't really seem like it will be any warmer than 70. The Teva boots and Rockport sandals are still in play.

This trip is tricky because the desert will be cold at night (and we will be going out at night to stargaze). I need base layers, layers, a hat, gloves, etc. I thought the temps would be warmer but I see no highs above about 81 in the desert. And I won't want to wear all my desert gear in the city, though I have some cute pants from Athleta that I don't mind wearing in both places.

My current quandary is whether to bring one or two pairs of jeans, and my utility jacket to wear in the city (in addition to the purple triclimate jacket I need for the desert, which turns into either just a fleece or just a windbreaker). I should probably just suck it up and wear my gear jacket in the city, alas. But my bag is from eBags, which means it can expand but also has compression straps, so I can do a fair amount with it.

Sounds like the shoe issue is mostly sorted, it is always the trickiest part of packing. I too am a carryon packer and my great feat was 17 days in China. Granted I never wanted to see those clothes again but so appreciated the ease of traveling light. Enjoy Chile! We were there 14 years ago (Santiago & Pucon) and have so many great memories. The people were so kind and generous.

Barbaraq, you’re right about new shoes, of course.

Elizabeth P, the Birkenstocks are less bulky than what I’d pack as a replacement, probably. I’d likely go with the Teva boots.

Jane, my Eccos are metallic and I was always taking them anyway. The purple shoes above are my hiking boots, which also have to come. I should have put the shoes inwas taking and considering in the original post - too hard from the phone, unfortunately, where I couldn’t sort my finds when posting.

Thanks all! I’ll wait for the weather report and take either Birks or Teva boots.

I rarely travel with Birks, because they are so bulky to pack. But if that isn't an issue for you, I am leaning towards saying "take them!" If you are walking all day, putting Birks on at the end of the day, is a treat for your feet. They are also so great for putting on to run to the hotel lobby, go to breakfast, wear around your room... kind of as slippers. If it's really too cold to wear them in the evening, you'll have your Ecco's as back up.

Reporting from Spain here. I have been here for 3 weeks now, both cities (Madrid & Seville). and rural places. I brought Naot closed toe sandals, Ecco sneakers and New Balance light weight hikers. They have served me well, maybe not as dressy as I would haved liked on a few occasions but I haved walked for miles and miles without pain. These are all old shoes. I would urge you to thoroughly test any new shoes before packing them. Window shopping in Spain, I think it would be a gamble to buy new shoes in a foreign country. Spanish women, judging from the shoes I looked , at seem to have narrow lasted feet.

Traveling is a joy! Have a wonderful trip.

I've been wearing sandals in 60-70 degree weather lately. I think you're fine if the humidity is high, and you dress elsewhere warm.

It's really all about the humidity! Right now where I'm at it's 60 degrees with 94% humidity and bare toes are just fine. It's when the humidity drops below 50% that my toes get cold. But even then I'm okay inside.

For reference, these are the flats I found that are slightly too big. Along with finds for the other shoes I’m discussing. https://www.zulily.com/p/pewte.....76621.html

I know I said no heels, but I wonder if the Rockport gladiators below might work. They’ve been a workhorse for me and cover the foot a bit more than the Birks. The heel is negligible.

The Cat - I won’t. I don’t want to go on a tangent about packing styles, as everyone has wildly different personal preferences, so I won’t write a novel about my reasons Suffice it to say I’m always miserable when I take more than a carry on sized bag or when I check my bag on the way to my destination (and I like the logic puzzle aspect of packing like this). I did an 8 day safari with carry on only. I can do this.

If worse comes to worse, I don’t need a dressier option. More context:
My husband is only taking his boots (which saw better days about 2 years ago), as they’re very comfortable for him, and he doesn’t care if people in Santiago give him the side eye at dinner. So we won’t be going anywhere too fancy. He also hates wearing sandals. I do like having more choices than he does, but I may not end up prepared for every possible occasion. And that’s okay! Santiago has stores, so it’s more important I prepare for the desert, where I need gear and I imagine any gear I’d need is expensive. I’ll be bringing back an extra bag of Christmas gifts anyway, I hope, so I could fit a gift for myself (another reason not to bring as much down with me.)

JAileen, I do think the temps are okay for Birkenstocks. It just wouldn’ be my first choice for those temps, which is why I’m hesitating. The lows for Santiago are supposed to be mid-50’s but I assume that’s the middle of the night when I’ll be at the hostel asleep. Wearing the sandals down to at least 70 degrees or a little below should be okay, if not my favorite option. I can’t see a firm forecast for my time in Santiago yet, but it seems unseasonably cool, so I’m panicking a little.

I think if the evening temps are 60s to 70s, then Birkenstocks would be fine. That seems warm to me. If you wore pants under a tunic, a light jacket and the Birkenstocks, that sounds fine for going out for dinner.

I would take what you have planned. I was in Chile for two weeks in December three years ago and Santiago was very hot and humid....and we did lots of walking. There are lots of shops there so if you need an emergency shop for some shoes there are plenty of options at all prices.

When I went I took

Running shoes
Jandals/flip flops
Sandals x 2

I mostly wore the sandals but did wear the running shoes for the gym/early morning walks and a couple of days on my feet.

3style I won’t take any more than 3. I couldn’t do a 4th unless they were so thin as to be useless for my feet. My suitcase is small and the packing for this trip is otherwise complicated enough. I want the option not to check a bag, plus I believe we are staying in hostels with private but likely small rooms. (I needed to provide more context I guess, but didn’t want to write a novel!)

The boots are lightweight enough and look a bit like hi-tops. I just saw the Ecco
Sneakers. as more versatile as I could wear them in the evenings when I’ve worn the boots all day. Plus I can get away with the Eccos with a dress. The boots won’t look good with a dress, and I still have the problem of what that third pair of shoes will be, I’d I take the boots and the birks. Also, the hiking boots are unfortunately new ( I didn’t realize the old ones had fallen apart), and my legs were sore after the one day I could wear them to break them in. I think I must have been using different muscles that I do another shoes. So I feel like I need a second option that I can wear all day, especially because I believe this will be more of a gear trip then a dressy trip.

I don’t want anything with a heel. I can t do it after waking all day. We walk a lot and my feet HURT afterwards. I have already mentally ruled out the shoes in the post. I want something that will fill a similar purpose though, just flat.

I just bought some pewter Naturalizer flats at TJ Maxx but they re too big. That might be okay, as my feet will swell. I may return them but want this option or a similar one until I decide for sure if I need flats.

Elle, you may be right that I should just take the Birkenstocks. I want to see the final weather reports before I decide.

You have a lot of doubts about the new heels which seem justified since you walk so much. Personally, I'd probably bring the Birkenstocks despite the temperature - you know they are comfortable and new shoes are always a gamble. But I'm biased because every time I've traveled with new shoes, they've hurt my feet.

I guess I'm wondering about the constraints. Three shoes maximum? If so, how heavy duty are your boots? On my similar trip I brought lightweight ventilated boots which felt nearly identical to wearing sneakers. So, if you can maybe ditch the sneakers, I'd suggest boots, heeled sandals and flats. Most variety in terms of feeling and temperature on your feet will keep them feeling refreshed. If you can wear the sneakers for the airport and also pack the other three, then I'd do that.

I think you can wear those shoes. Would you consider packing tights? Because that would work with those shoes too.

Yikes! I’m leaving for Chile on Thursday. Activities will include hiking and desert excursions. But we will also be in the city, and plan to visit wineries.

My plan was to bring hiking boots, sneakers and birkenstocks. The latter are silver and I can wear them with a dress in the evening.

However, the weather report is showing lower temps than we expect, especially in Santiago. 70’s-80’s during the day. Probably 60’s and low 70’s during the evening. I’m not sure the Birkenstocks are the rught choice anymore. I would have subbed in black ballet flats, but I just passed on some that were falling apart. I have midnight blue metallic flats, but they are harder to pair with things. They also have no support, and I’d be concerned about them in the rain (supple leather).

My feet are fussy and we walk a LOT. I also need the option to change out shoes at night and from day to day. The only shoes I’d be happy with in this third place are my Teva boots and my Birkenstocks really, comfort wise. But the weather won’t be quite right for either.

Should I suck it up and bring the Birkenstocks, even if I’m a little cold at night? Or find some sturdy black flats that will look okay with a dress ASAP? Bring the Teva booties and just use them at night or on rainy days (they are waterproof but don’t look it)?

PS- hope to bring this dress because I can also use it as a tunic over jeans. I’d wear my metallic Ecco sneakers that case, but it would be nice to have a third shoe, and to be able to wear this with or without tights.

ETA: trying to pack carry on, as that is my personal strong preference. More than 3 shoes isn’t possible. This will be more of a gear trip than a dressy trip. I just want ONE decently drrsssy option because I often need a change of shoe at night, and want the option to go to a nice restaurant at least once in Santiago. I’ve decided against heels entirely.
