A poncho &/ or big scarf over whatever soft & non-restrictive layers (regardless of weather or flight length). If I'm wearing shoes that aren't easy to slip off, then I also pack some flat slides to use in-flight & through security. I've seen Japanese salarymen do the same, so I guess it's 'business' appropriate?

Even better if my topper is made of merino wool, because I always seem to forget how to (literally) hold my drink whenever I'm on a plane lol, & merino repels spills effectively. It's much easier to look 'polished' when stainless, haha.

Have a safe & nice trip!

I tend to wear merino tops and soft but tidy pants. Footwear depends on what I am taking for the trip - I will compromise and wear athletic sneakers if that's the best choice.

On our recent opera trip to Arkansas I wore a cropped jeans, a nice linen top, Adidas suede sneakers, and had a nice looking light jacket for airplane/airport chilliness. In colder weather I would wear long pants, and add a nice scarf, warmer jacket, and maybe nice boots, etc. I don’t have a job anymore, but if I were wearing these outfits I would have felt fine encountering the CEO. In fact, after I had quit, we were behind him in line at the airport once and saw that his bag was overweight and he had to pay extra! Hahahaha! :)

I always end up in skirt leggings. For my recent trip to Ireland I experimented with trying on a couple other travel outfits but nope — ended up back in my tried and true. Knit layers on top depending on the temperatures at origin and destination (and transit points esp for airports where you tend to get on/off the plane in open air — this time we flew through Reykjavik and wow! The wind!)

I share some of the outfit strategies mentioned already! :)

I am a seasoned air traveler. When we go to Africa from Seattle - it's TWO long flights with a long layover in-between. Two days of travel. I have my outfits DOWN!!! :)

Uniform:

Wide drapey and polished full length trousers that are much more comfy than jeans (navy or red).

Sweater or sweatshirt (solid or patterned)

Faux leather jacket (red or geen)

OR, ink blue bomber

Gold sneakers, and a belt to match

Dressy Furla or Coach satchel that converts to a crossbody

Pearls, watch, specs.

Camisole and knee-highs too (COLD on the planes).

If I'm on a short flight within the US, Africa, Asia, or Europe - I will wear jeans. Or the above with a denim jacket or blazer. Sometimes I will thrown on a button down shirt if it's a very short flight.

I have global entry so security is easy. No shoe removal. I am fine removing my jacket and belt though. You need to anyway - no matter wear you are.

Rock those are some interesting points you make about how some clothing might trigger more scrutiny from security, I’d never really considered that element much beyond not wearing belts or other metal items.
Like others, I tend to wear dark jeans with some stretch in them for comfort but are too bulky to pack. Always a topper that can be easily removed or button up if needed.. Socks for warmth and slip on shoes for easy removal.

I travel about one week per month and travel on both domestic and international flights. Lately I have noticed how different airports have different security protocols. For business travel I used to wear an Athleta shirt dress made of technical fabric, but because it did not show the contours of my lower body I received a full pat down at a Midwest airport. Recently, my ankles were patted down due to the bungees at the hem of my pants.

I have now decided to stick to straight leg pants with zero hardware, and zero hardware shirts and jackets. I like Eileen Fisher stretch ponte pants, and try to wear a style that is a bit dressy. I also try to wear a fitted top with sleeves because I am generally asked to remove my outer layer at security. I prefer fitted crew neck sweaters or sweatshirts. Socks are a must. I have a narrow, low volume foot so finding slip on shoes can be a bit of a challenge. Dansko or Ecco shoes, even those that lace, are easy to get on and off but still look polished.

Going through security, especially when a foreign language is spoken, can be stressful. Making sure my travel clothes are security friendly helps reduce my travel anxiety.

I also typically wear jeans because they would otherwise take up more room in the suitcase.

But the most important thing for me is to pack a warm layer such as a cardigan no matter the season. Too many times I have been uncomfortably cold on a flight and now I am always prepared for that.

Depends where I am going and how long the flight is. On my most recent flights I've worn jeans twice and wide leg pants a couple of times. Either works great for me, assuming fit is good and comfort level of the item is high.

I keep jewellery / metals to a minimum. I also layer on top and usuallyl bring a scarf that I can take off or add. On my last overseas flight in the spring, I brought a packable lightweight puffer in my carry on and used it when the plane got cold at night.

I am an outlier because I often wear my jeans on the plane simply because they are heavy and take up a lot of room if I pack them in my suitcase. If I wanted to dress it up a little I would do some tech fabric pants. Beyond that, my uniform is a striped long-sleeve tee, travel blazer, sneakers (I have TSA Pre-Check so no worries about getting them on and off), my beloved "poncho blanket," and my Baggallini crossbody bag. And for my carry-on I just got this fabulous backpack from Monos, which I love!

Used to wear regular jeans but now I wear something with elastic waist, either woven joggers or jeans. I wear a simple top like a t-shirt and sometime a button down shirt, usually white. A scarf and a piece of outwear, depends on the season - a packable vest, a thin puffer, a jean jacket or a unlined blazer. If I need sneakers on my trip, I wear them on a flight but prefer slip on kind of footwear.

Comfortable, woven, elastic-waist pants with pockets (I have a flowered pair for spring/summer and a tartan pair for fall/winter). Smartwool knee-high light compression socks in a crazy print that goes with both pants. My bulkiest footwear (usually dad sneakers or Chelsea boots) because, among other things, flying has no guarantees of where I might end up.

On top, I layer, usually 1 more layer than seems necessary. Eg a tank, a buttoned shirt, and a blazer, or T, sweater, and trench.

A big square scarf for multiple purposes.

I travel with a fanny pack for wallet/phone/passport, and use a small backpack as my personal item (with a fabric shopper rolled up inside it)/

I usually wear the same outfit coming and going. I get to the hotel, hang it all up, let it air out for however long my trip is, and then wear it going back. What I prefer is a loose, breathable top, a front-close topper (like a hoodie or cardigan), and stretchy pants. All in dark colors or prints to hide spills. I have also worn a dress over pants because I like the way it looks. Slip on shoes that I can walk long distances in, as O'Hare always seems to put me at least a mile from my destination. All in all, I aim to look sporty rather than dressy. Athleta or Title Nine, for example. If I am traveling in cold weather, I want a jacket with zip or button pockets, and lace-up boots that also have a zipper.

For personal travel, usually athleisure in knit wear fabrics (I put a few athleisure knitwear in the finds below), and I'm a big fan of coordinated sets. For business travel, often the same, with a blazer instead of a cardigan or hoodie/sweatshirt as my top layer. I typically travel in dark colors (navy or black etc) so I don't have to worry about stains from luggage, etc. I have noticed many people travel in leggings or even sweatpants but I'm fan of knit joggers or pants which look slightly dressier to my eye.

The Modal Blend and Luxe Zella items in the finds below I picked up specifically for travel. The Zella Live in Pocket Joggers I've also worn quite often for travel, I'll sport the black joggers with a blazer for long haul business trips and no one has ever noticed.

I will travel in jeans, but not often. If I do it's usually my Paige denim because the fabric is soft.

For footwear, it's sneakers, always. I like to wear socks so sandals or ballet flats/loafers etc are out and you never know when you have to run to catch your flight so heels are a no as well.

Depends on where I'm going. I used to travel in jeans, when I'd be going to see family. On those trips, I would wear mostly jeans and pack one nicer outfit for a restaurant dinner-type of occasion. For most other travel, I wear something more polished yet still comfy and pack more of the same. I have accumulated a few pairs of travel pants with matching casual jackets, made out of tech stretch fabrics that don't wrinkle and can be dressed up or down. (Unfortunately I don't have Finds for them, but the Banana Republic pans in Finds are a good fabric for travel, as are some Athleta pants I have.) I've also worn long tunic or short dress over leggings, which was super comfy yet still felt polished to me. I also like to wear lace-up shoes, whether sneakers or oxfords, as I've found my feet can swell on flights.

Black stretchy long pants, shoes comfortable for walking (athletic casual), tank or teeshirt with sleeve length suitable for weather at destination, cardigan or linen shirt or neat sweatshirt topper. I go for practicality and comfort but just as much for neatness.

Pants must be no-zip for restroom ease, shoes must be suitable for walking the distance, and layers are needed for climate control. I carry a small backpack for my personal item with room for my topper piece and a light jacket or short puffer if it’s a cold season. The other things in the backpack are my iPad, chargers, water bottle, book and crosswords, and small crossbody with wallet, phone, meds and glasses. Generally we check the other bag(s), so pretty much hands free through the airport.
