That’s disappointing! I was going to pull the trigger in those for DH. The reviews were overall very good. Sorry they didn’t work out.

UPDATE: My Bose QC 45 arrived yesterday. I am not impressed. I have a small head and these do not fit snuggly. And the ear cup is a little too large for comfort. The music quality was mediocre, too.

The noise cancelling headphones have several hearing modes. My cheapies have normal, transparent for voices, and noise cancelling, or muffling And you can pair or jack them in for phone/music.

These are external noise cancelling when you're listening to something like music or a podcast? These days I just want silence--like when at work?

After a particularly noisy car ride to Walmart, I went in and got groceries and cheap, 80 dollar soundcore headphones. Takes the noise level from punishing to bearable and can still hear voices if listen carefully. Otherwise, as Jules noted, easy to ignore stuff like political discourse, angry talk radio, road noise, and just drive.
The return trip was blissful.
The expensive headphones next, I guess. Proof of concept having been established.
AND it cancels Christmas music. Yesssss.

Soundcore make over the ear noise canceling headphones that are a good budget alternative to Bose. I have a version of them and while I don’t believe they will totally cancel out a screaming baby, they would definitely take the edge off. My kids hate how easily I can ignore them with my headphones on…

Another rec for the Bose Noise cancelling earphones. I have been traveling on airplanes many times this year, and my old headphones died. So I bought these, and it is amazing how MUCH noise cancelling they are! Can’t even hear the announcements or tell that the flight attendant is trying to talk to me. Such a pleasure. My Apple AirPods are somewhat noise cancelling, and so was my Sony headphone over the ears that this one replaced, but these are STELLAR. Worth the money to me and they are wireless.

I also own the Bose over-ear noise canceling headphones, I bought them refurbished, from the Bose sight, so they were about 50% less than brand new.

Amazon and BestBuy are selling Bose Quiet Comfort 45’s for $249 right now. I never travel without my Bose! Or just head over to BestBuy and see what’s on offer at the moment. They are very helpful at getting you connected with what you need.

My son has Sony WF 1000XM3 earbuds and loves them. He did quite a bit of research into them 2 years ago, because the noise canceling was important to him (returned iPods my sister gave him to get these). They were $160.

Last Christmas he got me JLAB earbuds. He says they have the same noise-canceling tech as his, but I don’t care about it as much, so can’t comment on how good it is.

I don’t think these meet your criteria, but I have Bose over the ear noise cancelling headphones. They fold flat, and come in a protective case. I don’t understand how the technology works, but it really works. I don’t like headphones that go in my ear. As for price, they were expensive, but they were a gift for which I am very grateful. I feel much better after long flights - more rested, and less frazzled. I’ve had them for probably ten years, so the amortized cost so far is $30 per year or so. Even when I have limited luggage, as when we went to Hudson Bay, I make room for them. On long flights they are especially nice, as I am able to sleep.

I have read hundreds of reviews and I am still so confused. I need something that will block out screaming babies on airplanes. It needs to be small, so either earbuds or foldable ear muffs. Under $300. Compatible with an older iPhone SE, iOS 14.8.1. Comfortable.

It does NOT need to be wireless, produce quality music, have a microphone or phone capability, waterproof, or anything else. Just block out babies...and ok, those industrial strength lawn mowers.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
