Some people were surprised we would spend an entire 12 day trip in Paris but to me it’s still the best place in the world (I hadn’t been in 20+ years), with endless things to do and endless cafes to relax in when you need a break from the doing things. In that time we didn’t even get through everything on our sight seeing list - but had a great balance of museums/galleries with exploring on foot and shopping. They put temporary bleachers in front of the cathedral, I suppose for viewing the parts you can still see. </p> <p>I have to admit, while I had a great time in the other countries we visited, I love France and couldn’t stop smiling the whole time we were there. Kiddo stayed in a hostel in Rome and had a FANTASTIC experience there, hanging out with other young travelers. And yes! The gorgeous scarves in Paris were worn by men and women alike. My husband would never, either. It turns out he has a strong regional accent--they lived near Utrecht--and, coupled with his general rustiness, it really threw off locals in Amsterdam.</p> <p>Outside of Amsterdam, and even in it to some extent, the Dutch we encountered were just insanely kind and helpful. There were multiple moments when we stopped somewhere trying to get our bearings and locals immediately stepped in to ask if needed help and point out the correct direction. </p> <p>Locals in Antwerp probably were the surliest, but that was also difficult for me because Dutch is the only language we encountered that I don't speak at all and that part of the trip coincided with Kevin being confined with COVID.</p> <p>In most of France and Germany, everyone was kind. We believe in attempting the local language as much as possible and my French held up pretty well outside of the ER, where we used Google Translate on our phones.
