Hmm, I think you were smart to not have "label goggles" when it comes to that Barbour jacket. It doesn't look like most of their line, but you might be right that it's just that the photo really doesn't do it justice. The Shelly Segal, though, looks like a winner!

I'm guessing the Barbour is better quality, and I'm able to see past the bad angle. It certainly has more oomph, but for your purposes, coat 1 seems a clear winner.

Do you have a search set on eBay for your ideal Burberry? Yes, there are fakes galore, but with time, maybe, just maybe yours will appear within reach? Years ago, I bought a men's single-breasted Burberry trench on eBay to wear to a party where we were supposed to dress spoofing another guest's typical garb. I paid more for shipping than for the coat. Ended up wearing that coat a lot, and getting compliments every time, even though it was more worn than I'd have thought appropriate for workwear. Eventually, I was ready and able to shell out the money for a new one. Imagine my disappointment on finding the sleeves on women's Burberry's too short. Oh, well.

Hi Viva --

I'm trying to give #2 the benefit of the bad angle, but #1 is just so much better looking on you I'm not getting very far.

Plus I just think that longer length is more practical...I prefer to have my butt covered literally and metaphorically when I travel.

Thanks everyone! Your advice during the pre-shopping phase was really so helpful.
Gryffin: I was kind of loving the statement of that second coat but you are right about the versatility of the first.
Faith: I just love the "poison eye" phrase. It makes me smile every time!
Rachylou; No barns. Oh well.
Glory: Your original suggestion was so helpful in shaping my shopping, so thank you!
I know you are all right that the first coat, the one I purchased, fits the bill in so many ways. I will start saving for a Burberry!

Viva both look excellent. I think the first one suits your described needs exactly and is very similar to the coat I described in my response. I think that the longer length will add much more versatility and can be used for all events, where-as the jacket will be more limiting.

Hi Viva- I really like the first coat on you. The fit looks lovely. For a coat, it really shows off your figure and is really flattering. It seems like it would be more versatile. I think you could swing it dressier and depending on the weather it would simply give you more coverage. I thought the second jacket was very cool - it's more of a statement but it does read more casual. What look are you going for? Which one is calling to you?

I love the first one, well done! The fit on the second looks great, despite the angle, and I love the moto detailing, but I have a poison eye for the shiny black, although I agree that it makes the jacket feel more urban and less English country.

So I bought one and left a second in the store. Thought I would post for your thoughts. My main criteria were:
Most important: Lightweight, easy on/off for travel (security at airports, etc.), packable
Wrinkle-resistant
At least somewhat good against the elements, although it's not like I am outside a lot -- just running from building to cab, usually
At least somewhat warm or roomy enough to layer under
Stylish enough to help me look pulled together

This work travel is not corporate. I can very much show my own personal style, whatever the heck that is -- streamlined with edge? Still working on that one.

I bought the first coat: Laundry by Shelly Segal, Macy's, on sale for $90. Water-repellant, not particularly warm but I sized up so there is room for sweater etc., also cinched waist will keep out wind. Definitely wrinkle-resistant.
I am still thinking about the second: Barbour (from outlet near my home). On sale for about $150. The only one (sample size). Slightly warmer probably because more quilted. Definitely packable, wrinkle-resistant. More fitted in the torso, shorter overall. More sporty looking but very cute -- kind of a patent black, shiny, which makes it feel fashiony. It's actually got a little moto detailing on the elbows. BTW, this is a terrible picture from an awkward angle. :(
Someday I will buy a Burberry trench, but it is way beyond me right now. I don't want a deep winter coat, just something for these transitional times. Your thoughts?
