I love #4, but if you are not wanting another black coat, I think a colored trench would also be a good bet. Pick a color that goes with the majority of your outfits.

I have a navy trench similar to #5 (mine is longer though) that I travel with a lot. It's a slightly shiny nylony material (not quite waterproof but dries really quickly if it gets wet) and quite thin and light (but is lined) so it is easy to pack and stuff into small spaces. I do find my heavier trenches and wool coats annoying to travel with, although obviously if it is cold I have to bring a heavy jacket.

My dream trench coat is a black single-breasted Burberry. If I had one, I would take it everywhere.

Thank you Gabi - I think you might be right, classic is best, and I love the jackets in #5, 8 and 9 myself. The colour of #6 is what caught my eye too, because it's so pretty, and a little bit different than the usual.

Meanwhile, I think there's something extra-special about #9, even though at first glance, it's just a basic black trench. There's something about the styling of it. It's a Soia & Kyo coat, and is on sale for a really great price.

I was right - the coat in photo #4 of my original post is an Angie pick from NAS 2012.

Here is Angie's blog post with her picks for jackets and outerwear for this year's NAS:

http://youlookfab.com/2012/07/.....d-jackets/

If you scroll down to the bottom of the first list in Angie's post, you'll see the Miss Sixty Softshell jacket listed, and it's the same coat/jacket I've posted in #4.

Shabbychick - I love both #6 and #9 myself. Not sure about the light blue in number 6 in terms of practicality, but I am still drawn to it. Love the style and really like the colour, even if it's not the most practical thing. I also love the way number nine looks - just fab to my eye.

Thing is? I already have two black trench coats. The stupid thing is that the one trench that I already have and love just isn't all that travel friendly, and the other black trench I have seems a tiny bit too ...I don't know...staid or kind of ho hum on me.

A minor 'aha' for me? Would I wear it in Paris? Ack...some of the things I have in my closet, I would *not* wear in Paris, and I'm thinking that maybe I should make my whole wardrobe and closet something I would happily wear in any city.

You have a good eye Suz - because #4 is an Angie pick - not sure if it was one of her NAS picks or some other 'fab find', but it *is* something that Angie picked out on the blog.

Here's a link to the actual coat, which I am certain is an Angie find:

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/mi.....sultback=0

Gaylene - very good advice, and thank you! You're 100% right that a travel coat/jacket should be something that works in almost any situation, that looks good day or night. Reading between the lines of your comments, I get the impression that spending a little bit more for a truly fab travel coat just might be worth it. What you're saying makes a lot of sense - how something like this could be useful for several years. I might just have to step up my game for a good travel coat.

If you are going to be doing a fair bit of traveling, I'd start looking for a travel-friendly coat or jacket that you will enjoy wearing day and night. My thought is that jackets and coats are often the most visible item that we wear when traveling-- in rain, cooler temps, wind, and at night. And since you are traveling to some major cities, a stylish coat or jacket helps you feel more in tune with your surroundings. And, if that's not enough to sway you, a good-looking travel coat or jacket can be used for several years and for several trips. In my books, that makes it a fashion essential for anyone's closet.

I think all the jackets and coats you've shown have potential, depending on your style preference. Personally, I favor a classic style that works day and night, and that doesn't have too many zippers or details that make it bulky when I try to fold it up. I can fit my current full-length coat into a medium-size Ziplock baggie which takes up practically no room in my suitcase.

Ooh. I like #4!

But it might be a bit misadvised to buy yet ANOTHER black trench, especially if lint is a problem!

Does your Kenneth Cole one de-lint easily? Or is it a major pain to get the lint off it once it's on?

Will you be doing more casual stuff or will you sometimes be in situations where you need to be a bit more polished? (That might determine the style of the coat a bit).

I definitely think you should take a coat of some kind.

I already have three trench coats - but for some reason, none of them seem quite right for my upcoming travel. Two are black - one is very conservative-looking, one is very stylish but picks up lint and wrinkles easily, and the third is an orchid colour that I picked up on a whim in a discount store while on vacation in Las Vegas last January.

It might well be that any of the three coats I already own will work just fine for my upcoming trips, but like I said - with each of these existing coats, there are 'issues'. My favourite is my Keneth Cole trench - grommet belt, beautiful skirted style etc. , but this thing picks up lint like crazy and isn't the most travel-friendly. I *like* the orchid one, but am hesitant about the colour when traveling, especially in the fall - the orchid colour strikes me as a 'spring' colour. That said I did wear it in December and January last year anyway.

Meanwhile, I am looking at these ...see photos below.

I'm in for some significant travel in the very near future, and I need a functional and useful coat/rain jacket that still looks nice enough in all kinds of situations. I'll be traveling to San Fransisco, Paris, Venice, Rome (maybe), Istanbul, Athens - you get the idea. Chances are, I won't need a coat all that often, but when I do - I'd like to have something that looks nice and is still quite functional.

Of the coats I already have, I like my Kenneth Cole black trench coat the most - but like I said, it's not necessarily the most travel friendly. Should I just suck it up and go with something I already have and that I like quite a bit, and even if this means packing a mini-lint roller, then so be it?

Meanwhile, are any of the coats I've added photos for below a good contender for this sort of situation? I want something comfortable, easy to travel with and something that looks reasonably good. I will admit that I am liking the idea of a slightly shorter coat/jacket, just because dealing with a long trench on the plane is a bit of a fuss....
