Good thing I packed light - the RER station I walked to was closed and I had to continue to the next one down the line. Definitely hadn't planned for that! I'm finally at the hotel and officially done in now. The family hasn't arrived yet.

Nice packing job! Your capsule looks perfect for your travel plans. I think you were wise to get the hiking pants altered so you feel better in them.

Here is it all packed up (I still need to add some bits and bobs). I've added the second pair of jeans back in, I had plenty of room to do so and I feel better to have the two pairs. I'm wearing jeans, the trekking shoes and a tee and the cardigan on the plane. The rain jacket is in the laptop sleeve of the backpack, easily accessible. I might switch cardigan and jacket, depending on weather. The crossbody bag is a bit over the 2 kg weight limit for the second item, but the backpack is only slightly over 6kg (8kg are allowed) so I can add some things to the big bag if they insist on it. But I don't think they will.

Julie, that sounds great! No, the leggings are purely a base layer. You could wear them with a short dress I guess, but definitely not with a normal top.

I am just back from a week in wales with the family and the dog, we took long walks along the coastal path and explored some of the castles, my travel capsule looked very much like yours but with a black, cream grey palette. I threw a thick pair of ponte leggings into the bag at the last minute and wore them several times, can your icebreaker leggings be worn as trousers or are they purely a base layer?

Thanks Elizabeth!

Bonnie, agree that a pair of pants that are quick drying are often indispensable. And on this trip gear won't look out of place, so I'm glad I decided to take them.

I took my black Travex hiking pants to Italy in April and wore them a lot because they look enough like regular pants to wear during the day. They're also easy to rinse out and dry quickly.

Finally got the hiking pants back and they're more like straight legs now, definitely an improvement. I feel much better in them. I also decided to change things up with the bags I'm taking, I edited the first post to reflect that.

Dunno if this is for you, but I really like having a casual skirt in a capsule like this. I find it more comfortable than shorts in warm weather and I like being able to dress a bit differently for sightseeing and evenings out.

Right now I have long draped skirt in tricot that packs very easily and is an essential part of any travel capsule. In the past I've done it with lightweight linen (I don't mind the creases) or even an upscale sarong, which is not so fashionable these days, but an incredibly useful thing to have in the luggage.

I took the hiking pants for alterations this morning. Of course I can't go too tight without losing range of movement, but the legs are going to end up much more tailored overall. I can fetch them on Friday, I will post some pictures then.

Yes, I agree - it should be easy to take them in, they're basically just like any other cotton twill pant. If they would have been very technical and waterproof and whatever then it would probably be impossible without destroying the functionality.

Thanks Helen! I definitely will be living only with my own stuff for the two weeks in Britanny, I can't imagine my Sis would be happy if I would steal her clean clothes. It's a different thing at home when there's a full closet. I usually don't do a lot of shopping on trips, but I've bought a scarf and wool pullover in Scotland for example. But we weren't shopping for clothes in general, we toured production at Johnstons of Elgin (something we had planned for in advance). My plan for this trip is to get a breton shirt from Armor Lux. I looked it up and we'll be coming through Quimper on our way to our destination, it won't be a problem to get my family to make a short stop there. Who knows, maybe they'll enjoy looking for something themselves. In any case, I'm not as restricted after that first flight, we'll just be going by car afterwards and I'll be travelling back to Berlin by train.

Frannieb, great list! I think it's so much more relaxing if you don't have to lug around any unnecessary stuff with you. We'll be having the option to do laundry there btw, you just have to consider that things usually take a bit to dry.

Great post - i love travel capsule posts. I used to not be able to pack minimally and now I can.
I just got back from a 15 day vacation in driving and camping in our travel trailor and I had just a few more clothes then you because we were doing some strenuous hiking and in hot hot weather and needed to change once the hikes were done. I also knew I would have very limited laundry ability for the first 7 days.

I had a total of
6 shirts
5 pair of shorts
3 hiking specific shirts
1 pair of hiking specific shorts
1 pair of pajamas
3 pair of shoes - 1 pair being hikers

All this fit into one duffel bag

What I learned that may help -
I could have had one less pair of shorts- 4 would have been perfect - you definitely don't feel the need to change pants as often as shirts.

Having hike specific gear was invaluable - I could of had one less hiking shirt

I loved having my jammies for lounging in the evenings

Based on my recent trip if I could add anything to your packing list it would be nothing since you plan on buying a shirt on he road.

I'm envying your packing skills! Love the navy. I think if you can borrow some extras from family, go for it. Or do you enjoy shopping / op shopping enough to do that on holidays to find an extra piece? I often shop while on holiday ...but then have to fit things into luggage to get home again! Enjoy your holiday.

Thanks Carolbee! Can you wear a base layer under your lightweight travel pants? That's one of those situations where my Icebreaker leggings would be useful. I wear them under my long pants all the time in winter.

Not much to add but agree that altering the pants is a great idea. I've done this in the past and its helped to make them more wearable, eg less gearish.

I have a similar problem at the moment trying to decide which 3 pairs of pants to take on a 2 week trip. I could get by with 2 but its mostly an urban trip and I know I would get bored. My go to summer/travel pants that weigh nothing and dry in a snap are just too light for this trip since Australia is having a really cold snap at the moment.

I think you might be on to something by alterating the pant legs of your hiking pants. It would certainly make them more useful if you felt comfortable wearing them in more situations--not a bad thing in a tightly edited closet!

Sounds like you lucked out with your pants then! And yes, I know which picture you mean - visual memory is right. I agree, no more shopping for pants right now. I might take the hiking pants to my alterations lady though. They are not the typical polyester hiking pants but 75% polyester 25% cotton canvas. If they were a bit more streamlined they'de be more city appropriate, in a skinny cargo pants way. And yes, I can definitely wear the shorts at home too, dependent on the weather of course. (I'm probably also going to steal some loungewear pants from my brother.)

My very favourite pair of travelling trousers are a slim fit, side zip dark charcoal pair with a bit of stretch to them (enough to be comfy but not enough to bag out). I think they've been on every trip I've taken since I found them three years ago! The side zip means they don't dig into my belly on travelling days, the dark colour keeps them looking fresh despite the rigours of travel, and their skinny fit lets me 'blend in' in urban surroundings. My other favourite style for travelling are slouchy tapered trousers like that pair you have on your pinterest page (the blonde girl with her hands on her pockets wearing a blue sweater...I have a very visual memory! lol); I usually bring along a pair like that, my slim fit pair, and then a skirt. But skirts definitely make footwear more complicated, so I think it makes sense for you to stick with trousers as your bottom. And Gaylene has wise advice; since your closet is what it is at the moment, and shopping for trousers is a nightmare even without any pressure, I think taking the hiking pair along makes good sense! :)

Will your shorts work as a bottom for your week at home?

Yes you're right, I went with the skirts then! But I wore my knee high leather boots on that trip, so completely different shoes. That worked because we were only in big cities. With the casual/gearish shoes now it's way easier to go with pants. I think you've convinced me to go with the hiking pants... I wonder, maybe they'd be better for everyday wear if they were slimmer? Maybe I could have the legs altered to have them fit more like relaxed skinnies. There's a lot of swishy fabric around my lower legs right now. I think that's why I don't like to wear them with sneakers, in the city.

Hmm, nothing like packing for a trip to uncover wardrobe holes. ;)

The reason I suggested the skirt is because, if I remember correctly, I think you opted for skirts over pants in your winter travel capsule. I'm the reverse, but I've found a casual, lightweight skirt to be a really useful bottom in a summer travel capsule in Europe, especially when walking around towns and cities.

And funny you should mention it, but having something to wear while doing laundry is exactly why I pack a pair of quick-dry pants in my carryon. In addition, those pants roll up easily in a corner of my suitcase and are perfect in wet weather, on the beach, climbing around historic sites, and biking. They let me "save" my jeans.

Thanks Eva - that's right. No, the only other pants I have besides jeans are those navy twill pants, but I don't quite like the fit. Non denim jeans are a wardrobe hole though, so I might still look for something. What kind did you think of?

Thanks Gaylene. I guess I could wear the hiking pants in the time the jeans are laundered... I don't have a skirt I could see working in the way you describe, they're all wool and/or too dressy to work with sneakers.

Well, if I was trying to keep the weight down in my carryon, I'd be assessing if I really wanted two pairs of dark denim jeans. I'm not messy, so I find I can easily get by with a single pair of darkish jeans for a 3-4 week trip, even if laundry isn't an option, as long as I have a pair of easy-to-wash, easy-to-dry pants for hiking, rain, and such. My jeans become my nice-casual, as would the shorts. Actually, I'd be inclined to consider an easy-to-pack, light-weight skirt if I felt I wanted a fourth bottom--to wear with sandals if the weather turned warm or if I was going out for a bite in the evening--or over leggings with the sneakers just for a change.

Duplicating tops is fine, but duplicating bottoms usually doesn't work as well for me.
