These are great. I am eagerly waiting to learn what one wears to a science fiction convention. (Besides Una's Goth Nun / Anathem leather hoodie that is.

Claire, after this trip, I'm even more impressed with your minimal wardrobe. It definitely simplifies getting dressed in the morning, but I'm not sure I could keep it up long-term. And thanks for your thoughts on coloring - for the longest time I stayed away from black, so I appreciate the feedback.

Lantana, I can totally see getting sick of a limited palette if it's worn too often. A few pops of color definitely brighten things up for me too.

Suz, your comment made me laugh! Neutrals seem like such a good and easy idea and yet, so difficult for longterm enjoyment. Also, I usually don't go above two pairs of shoes on a trip, but somehow my Birkenstocks weren't going to cut it for the interview :)

Aubergine, I did get to do laundry halfway through. Which definitely helped. Mostly I wanted enough tops in case I needed to change because of heat, etc.

And for everyone who liked the bag, I forgot! It was on clearance at Kate Spade, fits my laptop, and has a crossbody strap. And it's not overwhelming on 5'2" me, so it's my ideal "professional" bag.

It's a great accomplishment to pack only a carry on for such a long and varied trip! Metallic flats were an awesome addition from your shopping. So versatile with neutrals!

Well done. Packing for that amount of time and range of activities would stymie me!! Love the capris, what a find!

I'm not sure I'm capable of packing for a trip that long in a carry-on, so I'm super-impressed that you managed it (and looked that good doing it). Were you able to do laundry on the trip?

Can definitely imagine that neutrals would get old after that long. I like all-neutral outfits too, but it's easier to feel like I'm just wearing the same thing all the time if there's not some color in there sometimes.

What a challenge this trip would be to pack for, with such a variety of activities!
Your new white capris were a great find, and I love the tank you're wearing with them. That looks like it could be mixed in multiple ways.
Good call on mostly black and white for this capsule. I, too, need to have some color in addition to black and white, even though I wear a lot of each.
Beautiful bags, speaking of color!

You look great, Dee! It's not easy to feel pulled together out of a suitcase when your activities are varied. I hope you had a good trip and that the interview went well!

The capris and shoes look super. Also, I believe very strongly in having choices in footwear when travelling.

A few years ago I left for what I thought was going to be a three or four day visit with my mother. I had a suitcase full of neutrals. Well -- she broke her ankle, and I ended up staying a month. It was agony!! (Yes, her poor foot -- but more to the point, my wardrobe, LOL!!!) Seriously -- I had my husband visit and bring me some colourful items a couple of weeks in, because the constant diet of grey, black, brown and a bit of white was depressing me.

So on my next long trip I was sure to take a fuchsia jacket and a bright scarf or two. It's great to lay a foundation of neutrals but I always need colourful pieces as well

The capris are a great find. Swap flat for heels and this outfit could take you out for a casual suummer's evening.
I see you took 3pairs of shoes, such a good idea I think. I can cut right back on clothes but not shoes.I find my feet need a change from one day to the next, especially if I'm walking a lot while travelling.
I wore a neutral travel capsule in olive and tan for three weeks two years ago. It got to be dead boring. Even now I'm averse to that palette. By contrast, on my last trip away I packed the neutralls, yes, but mixed them up with a royal blue gingham shirt and white denim. White should be a real nono for travel you would think but they stood up well and gave me outfits that I never tired of.

Great job Dee! That is a long time to go in just one carry-on suitcase. It sounds like your plan worked and you had something for each type of occasion. I love neutrals, but I'd never survive in just black and white. I think you have the right kind of coloring to look good in it (unlike me). Hooray for a little shopping on your trip too. That's always fun.

Sorry in advance for the long post! I recently returned from a 2.5 week trip to the east coast that consisted of visiting with friends, sightseeing, a job interview, and a science fiction convention. And given that I'd be taking my bag on all sorts of transit in multiple cities, it all needed to fit in a carry-on suitcase. I'm usually pretty efficient at packing, but this threw me for a loop! I was firmly on Team Overpacking for this trip.

I ended up going with a primarily black and white color palette for easy mix and matching, with a few green/blue/teal items thrown into the mix. I packed 5 bottoms, 9 tops, 2 dresses, 2 cardigans, and 3 pairs of shoes. This seems like a lot, but I was gone 18 days in total and liked having options. Somehow, it all fit into my suitcase - thankfully tanks, tees and shorts don't take up a lot of space. I realized that I probably could have managed without one of the bottoms and two or so of the tops, though.

And I had time for a little shopping too. I knew I'd break Austerity August, but I'm very happy with everything I bought! Especially my $8 white capris (shown below) and bronze loafers (also shown below) that I wore several times over the trip.

Overall, I think it worked well, but I was happy for a little more color variety by the time I got back. Does anyone else ever think they like neutrals more than they actually do? I've been decreasing the amount of color in my wardrobe in favor of neutrals recently, but could never let it go entirely!

Finally, here are a few of the outfits I wore on the trip. Outfit 1 was tank and capris for lunch and sightseeing, 2 was tank and khakis for visiting with friends, 3 was trousers and cardigan for a job interview, and 4 was a dress out to dinner with DH. I'll save my convention outfits for another post!

Comments and suggestions are definitely welcome, on the outfits or on packing/travel capsules in general.
