StagF - I find for four days it’s about the same as packing for a week- especially to account for varying activities. I am definitely taking the puffer as I am sure I will wake really early due to jet lag and head out walking. I have to check in 2 hours in advance bags or no bags so it’s not a hassle and costs no more. And I agree the skirt is going to be better than the black pants!!

I will take the rain coat Bijou - we have a travel umbrella too. The climate in Melbourne in winter is quite similar to NZ….. damp!

Cool skirt. I like the idea of taking it instead of trousers, because it gives you more variety.

What you’re taking for 4 days would work for me for a week, assuming mix & match works. As many shoes as days is a lot, but getting under 3 is hard. If it was me, I’d leave off the puffer; even if you don’t buy one, you could wear the coatigan and rain jacket together if it’s cool & wet, plus you might have a blazer or whatever.

But that’s me, dreading the bag claim. You said you don’t mind checking, so that’s a different thing and I should stop projecting.

Have a fun trip!

Yes, I think black is still the Melbourne uniform. And it is mid winter after all.

FWIW, this is what I’m thinking about taking when I go. Although I’m still thinking. Lots of black Not shown: black tights, black layering cardigan, layering tops to wear under mesh top and knits. I can layer the Vince skirt under the Amare skirt to winterise it. The Amare skirt is my favourite at the moment and I firmly believe in taking at least one favourite item when you go on holiday.

Thanks Suntiger. Temperatures are not too different to where I live (it's 40-60 F about). The coatigan, a merino long sleeve and a merino tank would be warm enough I think.

Brooklyn - had a tweak. Thinking I will take my skirt and blazer for the theatre. My black trousers aren't very warm and the skirt with opaque tights is better. I have a few black tops I can wear underneath. That also gives me a blazer and jeans outfit which will be useful I think.

Putting this capsule together makes me realise that I do need (want) to upgrade my knitwear.

The capsule is getting darker but I think black is still the Melbourne colour (I will report back)

Looks good to me! Now one thing about the coatigan, as the owner of a few, do you have anything long enough to layer over it? It may not get as cold there as it does here- but they made me prioritize long coats.

I think take your puffer not your coat. It will be better for the AFL.

I would be tempted to take a blazer for Hamilton and dinners out. Do you have anything you could layer under it discretely for extra warmth? Eg fine knit cardigan or sleeveless puffer.

Thanks Jaime. I always start with the shoes and work up!! I always find I want four footwear options (running shoes for an early morning walk or run, two daytime options and one more dressy option). But potentially I could look at three given it is winter and I don't plan to take any heels. I think for the theatre I could wear the black and white platform sneakers with black trousers as below with some bling.

I will wear black socks with the black and white sneakers, and I usually wear no shows with the veja trainers. As I think about it I can probably just leave these off - the boots and rollies are very comfortable for city walking, and if we do a longer outing I can wear my Asics running shoes. I could swap in a second pair of boots as well - I think I will have plenty of space.

I am on the hunt for a second puffer - but there is no guarantee I will find it - I will spend 1/2 a day looking at shops but my sons and husband are not keen...... and I want to spend most of my time with them.

I need to try on my theatre outfit and the brown trousers with my coats and see that they all work.

I'm with Rachy. Take a coat! Wear it on the plane. No need to pack it. If you're buying a puffer there - maybe don't take one with you?

I think so Rachy. I don't want to take the brown wool wrap coat as it's a bit fussy and bulky. Would prefer just my puffer jacket and the coatigan (with a merino tank and a merino sweater underneath).

I am planning my travel capsule for four days in July in Melbourne Australia.

It’s a fairly short trip with 3 hour flights plus travel to and from the airport. We are staying in an apartment (4 of us) and activities are:
- one night at the theatre to see Hamilton (booked)
- one night at the AFL ( Australian football)
- visiting a sick friend at her home
- shopping and inner city activities such as catching trams, checking out our old neighbourhood, a museum etc
- maybe a bike ride down the river or similar.

It will be mid winter- 7-14 degrees C and Melbourne can be both damp and cold.

I will have a checked bag because I may do some shopping there.

Thinking-

1.Four different footwear between sneakers and boots. I usually take my running shoes as one option. Looking at running shoes, Veja sneakers, black and white platoform sneakers, brown boots - I could avoid one of the first if short of room)
2. My coatigan and my puffer.
3. One pair of trousers and one jeans for the days in Melbourne.
4. One joggers for the plane trips.
5. Black trousers for the theatre
6. Two merino sweaters for the days in Melbourne.
7. Dressy blouse for the theatre - that works with the coatigan.
8. Scarves x2
9. Merino tanks
10. Exercise gear x1 ( leggings and warm top and beanie and gloves)
11. Crossbody bag (maybe x2)

Things I am unsure about:

- leather jacket or blazer to wear with the jeans for sightseeing? Thinking between the puffer and the coatigan I should be okay?
- wool coat (bulky?)
- rain coat (mine is nice and quite smart)

Any thoughts or ideas?

(I am wondering about the brown belted trousers - not great with my puffer - will have to try with the Coatigan as an option?)
