I hear you on the sneakers -- they work best as part of an intentional look. And yet...in this situation...

I love the pretty shoes LisaP posted. They might not work for long walks in NYC but you never know!

ETA if loafers stayed on my feet, I'd be wearing those. Alas, they don't.

Mumsy is the perfect description. It's funny: as fashion sneakers become more popular with all ages, they are losing their appeal . I still have lots of them and will wear them, but I would to love find some great oxfords now. Love the Clarks ones posted by kkards.

I swapped out from boots to sneakers at the last minute, but in general I am not a fan of fashion sneakers. (Finds of my two take-alongs below.) I like to look more polished in the city, and I find the sneakers combined with my weekend gear (bell sleeve sweater, jeans and utility jacket at the moment) is a little more mumsy than I would like to look. I have a pair of really great ankle strap, studded flats (Isabel Marant, snapped up at 50% off) but my feet would have been be cold in them because the whole side of the foot is bare.

This is such a great thread. I've got exactly the same problem too, and am fed up with wearing (fashion) sneakers so often.
A big thank you to everyone for sharing your solutions and suggestions, I'm taking notes .

a couple of years ago, thanks to YLF, i actually realized that transition was my dominate season....ie i live in a climate with true 4 seasons, so for 6 months or so, its not really warm enough for sandals and not cold enough for boots. with the sportylux/athleisure trend of the last couple of years, i've found some great sneakers that work for these seasons. and i'm with JAileen, oxfords work really well as well.

I identify it as a hole exactly the day I need them. And it happens every year in early April and again in October. But it's such a quick time period for use that having more than , say, 2 pair ends up being wasteful - for me, I mean. As others say, sneakers are good for this period, but I don't want to wear them everyday or for work occasions too often, and have found one pair this spring that I am wearing literally every day right now. A Lord & Taylor house brand , and in black suede (which I was wary of at first), but I swear that every time I wear them, at least a couple of people comment on them. I'm tempted to buy them again in another colour.

Your choices sound great for your trip. I agree with what others have said. It is a transitional time right now and this year I am wearing the heck out of my loafers and fashion sneakers with Smart Wool footies that don't show or knee high stockings or both.

I was thinking of oxfords. I don't wear "transitional" shoes much because it goes from cold to hot very quickly, so I was wearing booties earlier this week, and then I wore sandals yesterday. I don't have these, but others have said how they comfy they are.

Lisa, this is climate (and lifestyle) related and I hear you loud and clear. Transcona Shannon (who lives in Winnipeg) and I once had a lightbulb moment at around the same time. We had boots. We had booties. We had sandals. We had a few dressy pumps.

But actual SHOES that could go the distance and that worked well during mid to late April -- through mid-May and during late September- early October in our climates? Uh, no. Not really.

Neither of us had much need for transitional weight clothing, period, apart from business type stuff (which I, of course, need much less of than she did in her office job).

My wardrobe of transitional shoes is still small because typically I will only be wearing this type of thing a few weeks per year -- unless I travel to a more temperate climate. Which, um, it turns out I do -- every single year!! DUH! No wonder I need this type of shoe!

Ballet flats don't stay on my feet and anyway are not covered enough for most transitional wear for me (especially not with crops). The fashion sneaker has been a godsend. I now have a few shoes that fit this bill.

The leopard ones are actually retired (worn out, which suggests maybe I wore them more than I claim!). The white Ecco Soft 7s were new last summer and already are worn out on the bottom (hmmm...do you detect a pattern here?) I'm about to order a second pair because they're great. The Ecco 8s in silver are substantial and comfy. The second silver sneaker is in reality only a summer sneaker (it's mostly mesh) but it is useful as a more covered summer shoe for walking. I need insoles in all of these to take up a bit of the extra width/ length and help provide some support for my plantar fasciitis. Flats are not ideal for me but with the right insole these turn out to work really well.

YES. That transitional shoe is what I wear throughout Summer with bare feet: loafers, oxfords, low-top sneaks. I only JUST started wearing sandals again last year.

As I was reading, I was thinking, ballet flats. Those seem to be a great transition shoe, to me. You may need them in a different color. It's good to identify the wardrobe holes, so then you can fill them! Maybe you'll have a chance to shop a bit in New York. I really liked this shoe store in SoHo: Keito. It's where I got my JoGhost booties last fall, which I adore.
I also think oxfords are a good transition style.

I'm only going away for two days, but Angie's capsule inspired me to plan more than I usually would for a short time and actually try on the things I'm taking.

I used some of the clothing items that worked in my trip to warm southern Spain in March, but I'm going to New York where it's still on the colder and wetter side.

I have realized that I need shoes in a color like navy or light gray that are not booties and not super-open (I have the white backless loafers all set for warmer days and unfortunately my white Zara booties are not okay for mileage walking as demanded in the city.)

I saw a piece on line this morning about "transitional shoes" and I've forgotten where, but that seems to be my need. Of course there's nothing I can do about it now, unless I can go shopping in between learning about how my daughter will be spending her time at NYU in the fall. So I'm going with taupe waterproof Aquatalia booties from the winter and black Cole Haan ballet flats that were really comfy in Spain.
