Thanks Christina F, I'll think about your suggestions. I do have lightweight hiking pants and could bring them. DH and I are still discussing whether to plan for any real hikes vs. long walks. :-)

I was in a very hot, dry, elevated climate last year (Atacama Desert, Chile), and yes, it was VERY dry. It was a shock to the system for me, actually, and I didn't hydrate enough and caught a cold!

I agree with Sara that you need some hot weather items, especially some kind of lightweight pant or short. One pair of jeans that you can dress up or down is likely enough, as well. Do you have lightweight hiking pants or shorts, as well?

Thanks TorontoGirl1

Jaileen, I run cold so I'm ok in pants in the 70's, but Sara's comments on heat next week will make me rethink a little.

Thanks Sara, I will definitely rethink a bit and check out Meow Wolf, although I think I'd rather be outdoors We don't have any restaurant plans yet so if you have suggestions I'd love to hear them. Yeah, I do know about the altitude thing On that business trip so long ago some colleagues and I took the tram up to the top of Mt Sandia and went into the big restaurant (that's no longer there I believe) for drinks. Two sips and I had a headache so I asked the bartender and he said that yes alcohol can do that if you're not used to the altitude, which I was not. I know it can make you a bit dizzy too. Thanks for the reminder.

Yay! How exciting that you're coming to Albuquerque! Your capsule sounds great except you might want to add a few more hot weather items. It's supposed to be really warm here next week - close to 90. I'm thinking a long sleeve tee will be too warm for hiking unless you're at the top of the Sandia's. Lots of sunscreen and moisturizer are a necessity - your skin will be really dry. Also, if you're planning on hiking in Santa Fe or at the higher elevations of the Sandia's, be aware of how the altitude may affect you.

Do you know what your plans are already? I can give you some restaurant recommendations if you need them. If you have time while you're in Santa Fe, I would highly recommend a couple hours at Meow Wolf: https://meowwolf.com/santa-fe/about/ It's just so incredibly cool.

Your capsule looks very nice. I have a similar climate, although I’m at a lower elevation (4700 feet). By the 70s I’m in shorts, though. I would be too warm in long pants.

Next week DH is off to Albuquerque to visit a client, and I’m tagging along a day later for a trip of 5 days total, where we'll spend one full day in Santa Fe. We both adore the American Southwest and have spent a lot of time in Arizona, and are looking forward to visiting New Mexico. I was in Albuquerque on a brief business trip over 30 years ago but DH has never been there, and Santa Fe will be new for both of us. We're keeping the trip on the short side because this is prime gardening time for us at home.

I’ve been researching the climate, including reading Sara L’s postings. It’s high desert, with Albuquerque at 5300 ft and Santa Fe at 7100, so very dry and very strong sun, both quite different from my more humid sea level climate. Temps can vary 30 or 40 degrees in one day, and/or 30 degrees between the bottom and the top of some popular mountain hikes like Mt Sandia. This time of year the averages are low 50s overnight and low 80s during the day and it’s often very windy. I’m going to stick with mostly long pants and closed toe shoes. Here is what I’m thinking for a travel capsule...it seems like a lot so I might pare it down but I do need a lot of different types of layers

2 days plane travel (they will be full/longish days) – jeans, booties, light pullover, knit jacket, scarf

3 days out and about incl 4 evenings – 2 pr grey jeans, 2 short sl tops, another light pullover, denim jacket, black sneakers

A few additional pieces – sandals, black jeans, a brighter print top, bathing suit and indoor flats (hotel has indoor AND outdoor pools) and
a few scarves…might throw in another top or two since they don’t take much space, just possibly a pair of shorts

For hiking/outdoor – windbreaker, stuffable light puffer vest, spf hat, long Sl T, maybe hiking shoes

Would love to hear any comments or suggestions, especially from Sara L or any other fabbers who live in this area or similar climates, or have visited same.
