Good grief, it is saying something, surely, that I started out all agog over Rome! trip! and am now more impressed with the jeans shopping luck. (But then I love jeans and hate shopping so I guess you know where that is coming from.) Seriously stupendous luck, there, though--especially just before a plane to catch. Fingers crossed the luck extends to clear skies!

I bought a pair of jeans! And I was really lucky. My first stop was a big department store and I saw these after three minutes of browsing. One size left on the sale rack (G-Star Raw). They're called something like high waisted straights, on me they look like relaxed skinnies and they aren't that high. Then when I went to pay they gave me a further 30% off! So I bought these for 40€. And it was the first pair I tried. Shopping for jeans should always be like this. :D

I'm thinking of wearing them about at home tomorrow and if they give too much I'm taking them to my alterations lady on Monday. But it might not be necessary.

So now that I have a pair of jeans that looks alright I'm definitely going to take the sneakers as one option. :)

P.S. I'd wear my tops untucked, just showing the jeans with a quick pic here.

Thanks! Yes, I think the combination of sneakers and oxfords would probably be best. With this temperature range I wouldn't wear boots in Berlin either. If there wouldn't have been all that talk about non stop rain on the last trip I probably wouldn't have thought about it all. I guess I can always switch to black boots and oxfords if the weather predictions change for the worse shortly before the trip... And yes, I actually thought about getting either black jeans or a dark wash - I got a lot of use out of my pair of cheap black skinnies (I would call them fit only for painting and moving duty, now).

I'd wear the oxfords and pack the sneakers if I could find jeans - you need a pair of jeans! - or wear the black boots and pack the oxfords. Keeping the footwear the same color makes packing so much easier.

Have you thought of trying a pair of black jeans?

Okay, here are the shoes I've been talking about for reference...

#1 are my Waldviertler boots, usually worn with Veith socks from #2. I've worn the Trippen in #3 (mine are red) with the socks in #4. With both the boots I wear the socks over hose. I also wear the socks in #4 with my sneakers (see #5) and could wear them with the oxfords too (#6, although this isn't my picture), but I usually only wear the oxfords with hose and a skirt.

I'm still undecided.

I usually wear my black boots with wool hiking socks and those have room to accommodate them, but the Trippen aren't roomy enough. I've been wearing thin Falke merino wool socks in the Trippen boots.

Remind me which Trippens you have? I find the Dream boots to be perfect urban hikers, while the Bombs play better with a thicker sock. I'd have no hesitation packing either for a week of sightseeing. That said, it's a good idea to pack two pairs for more than a weekend, so you can alternate and let them air out between wears. Feet and shoes are happier like that.

If you can't, I'd recommend a boot you can wear with quality walking socks to absorb moisture, and take as many pairs of socks as you need. When in Rome, roam as the Romans. They knew a thing or two about walking long distances.

Thanks! I actually am in Europe and know all about cobblestones... It's a trip organized by the university, we have a lot of free time but we have an itinerary. It's five days with the whole group and then three friends of mine and me decided to use the opportunity to stay for two days longer. And yes, the pants situation needs fixing. I wear a lot of skirts and the jeans I have are mostly left over from days I was heavier. I should just go and shop until I have a pair (or I drop, whatever comes first). But I definitely need a warm coat or jacket! Part of the day it might be well below 10ºC and I'm generally always cold... It's Italy, but it is winter. I think I'm pretty set on my wool coat, especially because it also works well with a skirt or dress.

You know, perhaps you should leave heavy outerwear and your raincoat behind. You can always purchase a raincoat over there if it's just pouring. If it's cold you can layer or just frequently pop into a cafe for a nice hot espresso :)

Another thought would be to take a light trench coat with plenty of room to layer underneath if you so choose--a trench can be styled in so many ways. An ultra-light trench can double as a sun-shield over a plain tee if the weather gets really warm. I am fond of how crisp light trenches --belted or unbelted--look, so perhaps I'm biased!

As to shoes, sneakers or similar walking shoes on the cobbles and uneven pavement are always welcome in Europe, IMO, and nice-looking sneakers (and some not-so-nice-looking ones too!) are so much more common over there than they used to be. Even if you pack them as a secondary shoe, I'd recommend taking them along.

It sounds like you're really unhappy with your trouser situation. Perhaps you should purchase one pair of jeans you really love and that would work with the sneakers and whichever boots you end up taking.

Gaylene, yes that would be an option - the sneakers are lightweight and don't take up much room. I packed for the trip home (everyday stuff for six days without washing and dressy outfit) and had plenty of room left. I'm going to add my camera this time but even with that there would be room in the bag for either the sneakers or the oxfords. Of course the better backup for the Trippen would be the oxfords, or I will wear sneakers with my skirts, which isn't a favourite look of mine.

Unless you have time to test out the Trippens for a couple of days of serious walking before the trip, I'd stick with the known footwear.

As a backup, if you can't find a pair of pants before you go, could you fit the sneakers into your bag as a backup for the Trippens?

LAR101, thanks! I remeber the posts, but I will go have another look. I remember temperatures being a lot warmer though.

Gradfashionista, I remembered and hoped you'd see this! That's really helpful, thanks. I think it's as suspected - my black boots would be too much. I did try them with the insoles just now, but it doesn't really work well. So black boots means thick socks and it's going to be too warm for that.

Sara, thanks. You're right, they're an unknown. I've worn them here and they were comfortable, but I never wore them for a whole day of walking so far, never mind seven in a row. I think that means I'm going to go for the oxfords and sneakers combination and buy myself some new jeans/pants. Those were on my list in any case, I just never got around to it because I dislike pants shopping so much.

I would be worried about taking the Trippens since they're an unknown and you don't want uncomfortable feet. I would go with the oxfords or black boots since you know those are comfortable.

With those temps, I would dress in layers with a lighter coat and a sweater underneath that you could remove as the day warmed up. 19C with the sun out is going to feel pretty warm.

Astrid, I was there a few weeks ago and found it to be much warmer than expected. The winter sun is intense, and I regretted bring my boots and parka along. My woolen winter coat (for 0-10C weather) was warm, and I made sure to wear light silk blouses underneath to prevent overheating. I found my Converse-like sneakers were best for walking around, but many people were wearing Docs. Skinny jeans and denim were also popular. Hope that helps!

Hi Astrid,

If you haven't already read it, Angie blogged about her travel capsule this summer: http://youlookfab.com/2015/06/.....week-trip/

Later in the blog, she reports how the capsule worked out for her.

My trip to Rome is less than two weeks away and I'm a bit stumped what to pack. I'm going for seven days with just a carryon (my Osprey). I plan to take my Tom Bihn Daylight backpack for everyday, it will pack down to nothing in the big bag during the flight.

Normally I start my planning with shoes and outerwear, but I'm really unsure about temperatures and weather. It usually shouldn't rain that much, but years ago on a similar trip in February they had rain non-stop. I don't want to wear a rain jacket, I usually prefer my umbrella for just in case. Right now temperatures are predicted anywhere between 3ºC in the night and 19ºC during the day, with both rain and sun. Last year I took only my black boots and wool peacoat and it worked out well, but we were much farther north (highest temperature 12ºC).

I could take my Trippen boots which are lower than the black boots and don't need to be worn with thick socks. But I haven't really worn them for long stretches of time so far. Or I could take my rather dainty old black oxfords (probably fine for the temperatures but not good in the rain) and add my sneakers for rainy days. But then I'd need a new pair of jeans I could take, I hate wearing mine which are all worn out or too big in the waist. I could also just take the black boots which are super comfortable and wear them with socks on colder and rainy days and try if I can add the insoles of the Trippen boots to them to make them work with thin socks too.

I thought taking the wool coat which I can leave unbuttoned when it's warm, without a big scarf or anything. It might be too warm at times, but it is breathable and would probably transition best...

My clothing rather depends on my shoes and I would need to do some very targeted shopping (tights, jeans) soon, depending on what I'm going to take. It wouldn't be necessary at home, but with a small travel capsule...

What do you think? Any and all comments are appreciated.
